Meet Vinny
Vinny (aka Vinnyboombat) has appointed himself your guild’s official greeter. Whenever someone joins, Vinny makes sure they get a real welcome in guild chat, not silence or the same “welcome!” every time.
GreetingGoblin started as a small addon for my own guild and snowballed. New members started chuckling at their welcomes, and guildmates began piling on with their own “whoop whoop”s. It turns out a good greeting gets people talking, and that’s the whole point. It's not meant to be serious, so don't expect it to be unless you change the welcomes and puns to be what you specifically want. It's meant to be lighthearted fun with a few surprises mixed in.
How it works
When anyone joins your guild, Vinny waits a few seconds and then posts one welcome in guild chat. Every welcome is randomly built, so it rarely repeats itself:
- Greetings: a random opening, the new member’s name, and a random closing. Mix and match makes for a lot of combinations.
- Race and class puns: over 140 built-in puns for every race and class. A new Tauren might hear “A new Tauren joins the herd!” A Dwarf might find out the first round’s on them.
- Name puns: set up keywords, and if a new member’s name contains one, Vinny can welcome them with a pun on their name.
Make it yours
- Write your own openings and closings, or lock pairs together so they always go out as a set.
- Keep several greeting sets and switch between them: one for everyday, one for holidays, whatever suits your guild.
- Use
<name>and<guild>anywhere in a line, and they fill in automatically. - Set how often puns show up, from never to every time.
- Set how long Vinny waits before posting, so it feels natural instead of instant.
- A live preview shows you a sample welcome before it ever reaches guild chat.
No double welcomes
If several officers or guildmates run GreetingGoblin, they quietly coordinate in the background and only one of them posts. New members get one welcome, not five.
Join log
GreetingGoblin keeps a log of who joined and when, along with their race and class, so you can look back at who’s come through the door.
Works with GuildHQ
GreetingGoblin is also built into GuildHQ, my full guild management addon. If you run both, GuildHQ takes over the welcomes and GreetingGoblin steps aside, so nothing doubles up. Your settings carry over too.
Getting around
- Click the minimap button, or type
/greetinggoblin(or/ggoblin) to open the settings. - Turn welcomes on or off any time with one checkbox.
