Glass Forever

Minimal chat that slides in and fades away. Glass, updated for WoW: Forever.

Glass Forever

Glass Forever in action

Glass Forever is a fork of Glass by Mitchel Cabuloy (mixxorz), updated to run on WoW: Forever. Chat slides in as it arrives, fades away when you are not using it, and stays out of the way of the game.

Status: beta. Tested on WoW: Forever only. Bug reports are welcome (see below).

Features

  • Clean, fading chat. New messages slide in and fade out after a while. Hover the chat to see them again.
  • Edit Mode. Move Glass Forever and change its size, fonts, opacity, animations and edit box position from Blizzard's Edit Mode, like any other part of the UI.
  • Options in the game's Options window (Options > AddOns > Glass Forever). Type /glass to open them.
  • Colored tab glow. When a message arrives for a tab you are not looking at, that tab glows in the color of the chat type: guild green, party blue, whisper pink and so on. The tab bar fades in for a few seconds so you notice it even when the chat has faded out.
  • Separate chat windows. Drag a tab (including whispers) out of the chat to make it a separate window, and drag it back to join Glass Forever again.
  • Copy from chat. Web links are clickable and open a window to copy them. Right-click a tab and choose "Copy chat text" to copy its messages.
  • Short channel names (optional): [1] instead of [1. General], [P] instead of [Party], and so on.
  • Chat history. The last 50 messages of each tab come back when you log in again (per character, can be turned off).
  • Selected tab marker. A thin line above the active tab, so you always know where you are.

Colored glow: how to use it

Nothing to configure. Create a tab, open its settings (right-click the tab) and enable the message types you want it to show. When one of those messages arrives and the tab is not selected, it lights up. The General and Combat Log tabs are left out on purpose.

Fixes compared to the original Glass

The original addon is no longer maintained, and recent changes to the game's addon API broke it. Glass Forever fixes, among others: "secret" value errors, blank chat on login, tabs going blank or overlapping, whisper tabs failing after being re-opened, Combat Log text cut off, and frame rate spikes.

Install

  1. Download the latest file.
  2. Extract into the Interface\AddOns folder of your WoW: Forever install.
  3. /reload ingame or restart the game completely.

Do not install it together with the original Glass. They use the same folder name and saved settings.

Known limitations

  • The game no longer tells addons the exact height of a message. Glass Forever counts the lines itself, but when the game also hides the message text (this can happen inside instances), a long message may still overlap the next one.
  • Only tested on WoW: Forever. Other clients may not work.

Bugs and feedback

Please report problems for this fork in the issue tracker, not to the original author. Include the full error text (BugSack works well for this) and what you were doing when it happened.
