Forever Chat

Spend less time scrolling and more time playing. Forever Chat improves the familiar World of Warcraft chat window with shorter prefixes, useful filters, fast search, and subtle unread notifications—all accessible from your General tab.

Cleaner, easier-to-read chat

Long channel headers take space away from the conversation. Forever Chat keeps the channel number and name, abbreviates the location, and removes unnecessary brackets around player names.

Example:

Before: [1. General - Elwynn Forest] [Playername]: Hello!
After:  [1. General - EF] Playername: Hello!

Prefer an even smaller prefix? Enable channel numbers only to display [1]. Recognized language suffixes such as “English” are removed from channel headers. Player names, channel links, and item links remain clickable.

One tab, the conversations you want

Use the Filter button above General to display All, Party, Raid, Guild, Whispers, Instance, Nearby, or Channels.

Changing filters immediately rebuilds the view from captured history and filters new messages as they arrive. Hidden messages remain available when you switch back. Party includes instance chat; Guild includes officer chat. These filters control what you see, without changing where you send messages.

Search as you type

Click Search above General and type a word or phrase to narrow the displayed conversation instantly. Search works together with the selected channel filter—choose Party, then search for a name, quest, or item.

A separate Search chat window in Settings lets you browse and copy matching messages with timestamps.

Subtle unread badges

Small Whisper, Party, and Raid badges appear when new messages arrive. Click a badge to open its conversation filter in General and mark that category read. An active text search is cleared so it cannot hide the conversation you opened.

Badges stay hidden when their count is zero. No notification sounds are required.

Highlight what matters

Highlight your character name and up to 20 custom words or phrases in gold. Add terms such as “Hogger” or “LFM” through the settings panel. Matching uses literal text, making phrases easy to configure.

Keep your General history after /reload

Forever Chat saves up to 2,000 General chat messages per character during a normal reload or logout, including messages hidden by its filters. Restored messages remain available to the channel filter and search.

History is stored locally in WoW's SavedVariables. Filter selection and unread counts reset for the new session. Sent-message input history is session-only.

Player-name tooltips

Hover over a player name to see their name and available character information. Class, level, and guild appear when the game has provided that data through chat, known units, guild information, or cached Who results.

Information is not guaranteed for every player. Forever Chat does not automatically send Who requests; normal Shift-click Who results can supply additional information when available.

Easy controls

• Settings: Change formatting, unread badges, highlights, and tooltips using the button above General, or open the panel with /fchat.
• Filter: Switch between conversation types using captured history.
• Search: Filter the visible chat in real time.
• Up / Down: Recall previously sent messages without holding Alt. Press Enter when ready to send.

Compatibility and beta status

Version 0.13.0 targets the WoW Forever beta client, with interface version 16001. No additional addon dependencies are required. Compatibility with other WoW client versions has not been verified.

This addon is under active development. When reporting a problem, include the addon version, client build, steps to reproduce it, and any Lua error text.
