Downcast
In Classic, casting Power Word: Fortitude or Renew from a macro on a lower-level player fails with "Target is too low level". The same spell cast from a plain action bar button works, because the game drops to the best rank that player can take. Downcast gives your macros that behavior.
How it works
Downcast keeps each spell's top rank in a hidden action slot and gives it a button your macros can press. The game then picks the rank, so the highest one that will land is always used. When you train a new rank, Downcast picks it up automatically.
Each press aims at your mouseover first, then your friendly target, then yourself, the same as the classic mouseover macro.
Using it in macros
Swap your /cast line for a /click line. Everything else in your macro keeps working:
#showtooltip Renew
/dismount
/cancelaura Shadowform
/click DowncastRenew
Modifiers work too:
#showtooltip [mod:shift] Power Word: Shield; Renew
/click [mod:shift] DowncastShield; DowncastRenew
Spells
Priests start with these buttons:
| Button | Spell |
|---|---|
| DowncastRenew | Renew |
| DowncastFort | Power Word: Fortitude |
| DowncastShield | Power Word: Shield |
| DowncastSpirit | Divine Spirit |
| DowncastShadowProt | Shadow Protection |
Any class can add spells:
/downcast spells list spells worth adding
/downcast add Mark of the Wild adds DowncastMarkoftheWild
/downcast add Arcane Intellect as AI adds DowncastAI
/downcast remove AI removes a button
/downcast list your buttons and their /click lines
Good to know
- Direct heals like Flash Heal never get blocked, so keep those on /cast.
- Spells that have only one rank have nothing lower to drop to, so Downcast can't help with those.
- Downcast only uses empty action slots and never overwrites anything on your bars.
- Adding or removing spells works out of combat only.
- /downcast debug prints what each press does, if something isn't working.
