What's new

Changelog

1.0.0-beta.23

  • A player in the speaker window. A row at the foot with the time, back, stop, next and replay, and every part of the window has its own place, so nothing jumps from one line to the next. In cinematic the row shows while the mouse is on the band. Stop keeps the lines waiting; play starts the line again. The X closes the window and stops everything; right-click still skips. Don't want the row? Untick "Player controls" under Options. Thanks Pylo!
  • Options in the journal. A right-click on the minimap book or /lore options opens them on the journal's Options tab, in combat too. Each section shows the everyday settings; the rest wait under "More options". Thanks Pylo!
  • Three campfire tales per zone. Every zone up to level 30 and the capitals now have three tales, told in turn: sit by the fire again and you hear the next one.
  • Hear a place again. A zone's page in the journal lists the places you've walked into, like Bloodhoof Village or Red Rocks. Click one to hear the narrator's line again.
  • A quest ends the greeting. Take a quest after listening to an NPC's welcome for a while and the welcome stops, so the quest plays. With an auto-accept addon the greeting still finishes first, in the background. An option under Voices if you'd rather always hear greetings to the end. Thanks tranced93!
  • More voices. Every share since beta 21 is recorded: the starting zones and capitals, a new goblin town's innkeeper, merchants and trainers, the druid's trial of the Great Windborne Cat Spirit in Moonglade, Silverpine's worgen troubles, the Defias riots, the Ravenclaw apparitions and much more, with recaps for the new Forever quests. Reworded quests like The Hermit, Remnants of War and Stop the Spread are recorded again. Thanks Sinum, Cav3dust, OutOfCtrl, Alche, Azona, ywinnicole, Lukey_Q, Mavric, Denise, CommissarBear, JudgmenT_24 and Pylo!
  • 30 new words on the way back to your body, so the narrator's ghost lines repeat much less. Thanks eMan!

Voices put right

  • High Priestess Lorthuna and the Al'Aketh Ambushers on Zephras Isle speak with a woman's voice. Thanks Niktorak!
  • Thra and Migi, the orc children near the Valley of Wisdom, have children's voices. Thanks JudgmenT_24!
  • Quest lines that spoke to you by the class of the player who shared them say adventurer now: Brakk's thanks in The Adventurer, Harmony in Balance, The Argent Emissary and Sparring Match. Thanks JudgmenT_24!
  • Wizbang Cranktoggle speaks his own messages from the Buzzboxes in Darkshore, not the narrator. Thanks Lukey_Q!
  • Where a quest page describes someone between their words, like Dendrite Starblaze's gestures, the narrator reads the description. The page describing a dead guard in An Unfortunate End is the narrator's too. Thanks Azona!
  • The night elves' "It is done, and done well" after a quest is reworded. Thanks Azona!
  • Three campfire tales no longer give away what you'd find out yourself. Thanks Pylo!

Fixes

  • The music and ambience always come back up after someone talks. If yours are still low from before, set them once under System > Audio. Thanks Azona!
  • A new character's intro plays in peace: place lines, NPCs talking nearby and the first-time tour wait until it has ended. Thanks Guillimus!
  • When a holiday begins, you get your own faction's chapter: the Horde's Wickerman story no longer greets Alliance characters at Hallow's End.
  • Open several books, letters or plaques one after another and each is read in turn. Plaques laid out as pages show their words in the subtitles, and the pages of the military ranks books are no longer mixed up. Thanks Azona!
  • A letter that comes in a version for each race, like the druid's letter after Bear Form, no longer plays another race's version. Thanks Azona!
  • Subtitles spell names as they are written: Goldshire, not "Gold shire".
  • WoW: Forever's new dungeon quests are in the journal under their dungeon, like the Ruins of Lordaeron's. Thanks Alche!
  • The quest markers no longer show holiday and event quests, or another copy of a quest you've already picked up or finished.
  • Listen and Recap sit side by side on the quest window. Thanks Azona!
  • "Mute the game's greetings" works on its own, also with Chronicle's greetings off. Thanks Riskie!
  • The first-time tour keeps its bubbles on screen and stops its sample line when you move on. Thanks Pylo!
  • Pylo's fixes to the line queue, greetings, quest zones and party sharing: lines waiting their turn are no longer thrown away, a line that couldn't play isn't counted as heard, and the same recordings aren't sent to your party again after a /reload. Thanks Pylo!

1.0.0-beta.22.1

  • Pause. While someone is talking, the speaker window's button next to the X pauses, and pressing it again resumes. The game can't hold a sound halfway, so the line starts again from its beginning, then everything that was waiting after it plays on: pick up 8 quests, pause to talk to your group, and none of them are lost. The "Play, pause or resume" keybind does the same. Thanks Rhiload!
  • Enemies that come as both men and women (Twilight Thugs, Defias and others) no longer all shout in the same voice when the addon can't see them, for example mid-fight. Each one keeps a voice of their own. Thanks Lukey_Q!
  • Quiet when unsure of man or woman under Options, Voices: when the addon can't see which one is talking, it stays quiet instead of picking a voice. Off by default. Thanks Azona!
  • Reset to defaults at the bottom of the options puts every option back to how it came, after asking. Your journal, the lines you've heard and where your windows sit stay.
  • The cinematic subtitles' shade fades out softly at its sides again, instead of ending in a hard dark box, and the background slider changes the window on screen right away.
  • Your character's own lines after handing in a quest are now off unless you want them: turn on "My character reacts" under Options. Thanks Azona!
  • Help bring voices to other languages. Playing with a German, French or other client? /lore share now sends the quest texts and greetings as your game shows them, the first step towards voices in your language. German comes first.
  • Speaker window background: a slider under Options, While talking, for how dark the window's box or the cinematic shade is, all the way down to just the words. Thanks Alche!
  • "Mute the game's greetings" now also mutes WoW: Forever's new voices, like the Skyborne on Zephras Isle, not only the classic ones. Thanks sesshomaru!
  • Lock the speaker window under Options, While talking: the window or the cinematic subtitles stay put and can't be dragged by accident. Thanks Hedge!
  • A quest you abandon leaves the journal's "in progress" right away, not at the next login. Thanks Pylo!
  • The story beside the quest log updates when you turn "Journal only" on or off. Thanks Pylo!
  • Opening a book while someone is talking no longer cuts them off: the page waits its turn, also with DialogueUI's book window. Thanks Pylo!
  • Books, letters and plaques you read before the Library existed are on its shelves now. Thanks Pylo!

1.0.0-beta.21

  • More voices. Your shares since beta 20: Teldrassil's camping lessons with Lyreena Duskblade and the Sisterhood of Elune, Stonetalon, Duskwood's Raven Hill, the Deadmines, Arugal's threats in Shadowfang Keep and more, with a new chapter and recaps for 8 Forever quests. A few lines now carry a mood too, like Arugal's menace. Quests WoW: Forever reworded, like Ghost Hair Thread and Journey to Stonetalon Peak, are recorded again. Thanks Azona, MrSensible and Alche!

  • The narrator's word on the way back to your body now comes a few seconds after you release, once you are on your way, not the moment you do.

  • Arrange the journal's zones your way. Drag a zone heading onto another to move it there, or right-click it to move it to the top or hide it. Hidden zones wait in a folded Hidden group at the bottom, where a right-click shows them again. Saved per character. Thanks Alche!

  • Thunderhorn's Report no longer shows on the map before Mull Thunderhorn has it for you: it waits until the three water wells are cleansed.

  • Longwalker Malah, found dead in Mulgore, no longer speaks: the narrator describes what you find.

  • With DialogueUI's book window, a book is read from its first page to the end, instead of every page starting at once and only the last one being heard. Thanks Alche!

  • The Hint button beside the story so far now says Hide hint while the hint is on, and a second click puts the map back.

  • Tell me about new places. The first time you walk into a named place inside a zone, the narrator says a line or two about it: about 400 places in every zone up to level 30, from Goldshire and Moonbrook to Razor Hill, Brill and the Crossroads. Only when nobody else is talking; turn it off under Options. Places without a line yet are kept for /lore share, so more zones follow. Thanks Lukey_Q!

  • Bad has choices now. With "Help check the voices" on, Bad opens a short list: wrong voice for this character, too high, too low, doesn't fit the moment, a word said wrong, or doesn't match the text. One click, and "Something else..." still lets you write your own note. Thanks BuzzTea!

  • A short tour for new players: a few bubbles show the journal, the speaker window, the options most worth a look and how to share quests that have no voice yet. Anyone can see it with /lore tour, and the first quest window with a Listen button explains it once.

  • With "Help check the voices" on, the cinematic subtitles leave room for the Good and Bad buttons, so they no longer cover the last line.

1.0.0-beta.20

  • Cinematic subtitles. A new look for the speaker window: no box or portrait, just the name, what it's about and the subtitles in the middle of the screen on a soft shade, like a film. Choose it under Options with "Speaker window style"; each style remembers where you put it. Thanks Alche and Hedge!
  • The map's quest markers no longer offer quests you can't take yet: quests that come later in a chain wait for the one before, and WoW: Forever's class quests only show for that class. Thanks Alche!
  • NPCs talking to each other, like the Stormwind kids with their dolly, are heard both ways now: an answer waits for the first line to end instead of being lost. Thanks Azona!
  • Books, letters and plaques now have a Listen button, so you can hear one you've read before.
  • Forever's characters with a chat option only ever got a voice for the last page someone saw. Recording now keeps every page they show, the welcome and the answers, so when you /lore share, all of them get voiced.
  • Playing with a controller: with a gamepad on, Chronicle's windows close with its back button (Escape): the speaker window, the campfire tale and the voice pack reminder. With nothing playing, the Skip key binding also closes the speaker window, so you never need the mouse. Thanks for the request!
  • Choose the sound channel the voices play on: Dialog as before, or Sound Effects, Master, Music or Ambience, so you can balance them with the game's own volume sliders. Under Options, General. Thanks AstroCat!
  • Move the Listen button on the quest window if it sits on another addon's button: hold Shift and drag it. Shift-right-click puts it back. Or turn on "Side tabs on the quest window" in the options, and Listen and Recap become tabs on the window's side, like the journal's. Thanks AstroCat!
  • If you have recorded a lot, new greetings stopped being kept for /lore share after 400. Greetings that have a voice by now are let go, so recording keeps going.
  • Enemies who come as men and women, like the Scarlet Zealots, more often get the right voice: Chronicle now also finds who is speaking through your target's target, your party's targets and the soft target, not only your target, mouseover and nameplates.
  • The Spirit Healer speaks wherever you die: her voice was only in the Eastern Kingdoms download, and now comes with each of them. Thanks Alche!
  • A greeting waiting for someone else to finish no longer plays after you have left: close the NPC's window and it is dropped, so the wind rider master won't greet you when you land in Thunder Bluff. Thanks Alche!
  • No more two voices at once: lines the game already speaks with its own voice acting are left to the game, like Mr. Smite's "We're under attack!" in the Deadmines, VanCleef, Arugal and the Relic Guardian at the end of the Wetlands excavation site. Thanks Azona and eMan!
  • Greetings WoW: Forever reworded, like Apothecary Helbrim's in the Barrens, were shared but never voiced, because the old words were already known. They have a voice now, with over 70 others: trainers, Vol'jin, Thrall, Cairne and Bolvar among them. Thanks Alche!
  • More voices. Your shares since beta 19: the Wetlands' dig sites and Menethil Harbor, Blackfathom Deeps, Zephras Isle's High Order, Stormwind, Ironforge and Tirisfal, and the welcomes and answers of many of Forever's characters. Three new chapters, the Secrets of the Goaz Stone, the Silent Council of Hillsbrad and the Branch Picks the Mage, with recaps for 9 Forever quests. Va'xug Firefure, lost in an Ashenvale ravine, has his own voice too. Quests WoW: Forever reworded, like Reclaiming Goods, Nek'rosh's Gambit and Cycle of Rebirth, are recorded again. Thanks tom316, Sesshomaru, base2121, Cav3dust, Hedge, Felsling, Alche, Wing and itsthatkidrod!

1.0.0-beta.19.1

  • With DialogueUI, closing its quest window no longer cuts off the quest giver mid-sentence, unless "Stop when the window closes" is on. Thanks Pylo!

1.0.0-beta.19

  • Hide what I haven't found: a new option for exploring without any hints. No chapters still to discover in the journal or on the map, no road ahead, and no empty places or totals in the Library. Thanks AstroCat!
  • The Library. A new page in the journal, under Your chronicle: every book, letter and plaque you have read, on shelves, with how many you have found. Click one to hear it again, and books that come in parts are kept together as a series, like the Green Hills of Stranglethorn: hear it all, or pick the chapter or page to start from. The ones you haven't found are only counted, never named. Each zone's page also ends with its books and notes: the ones you have read, to hear again, and where the others lie (click to mark the spot on the map), and the list on the left shows how many you have found in each zone. Thanks Alche!
  • New books and plaques voiced: WoW: Forever's own, like the history of Farholde and the Brotherhood of the Horse with its memorials, Khadgar's memorial in Alterac and a few mysterious notes and pages, "The Alliance Splinters" in Blackrock Depths, and Forever's new letters and notes, like the Memories of Valor, the Walks of Shaman, the Tablets of I'lalai and the trainers' letters to new Skyborne, gnomes and Forsaken paladins.
  • Using DialogueUI with another voice addon like Spoken, and Chronicle's quest voices turned off? The other addon now gets to speak in DialogueUI's windows; Chronicle used to keep that place even with its voices off. Thanks AstroCat!
  • Quest hints, for playing with the map's quest objectives off. Turn it on under Options, Map, then right-click a quest in the quest log or the tracker and choose Hint (or press Hint beside the story so far): the map shows where that one quest's objectives are, and everything goes back as it was when you close it.
  • Over a hundred of WoW: Forever's new characters spoke with a plain stand-in voice, because the game doesn't tell addons their race. They now speak in their own: the tauren of Mulgore, the Forsaken paladins of Bandarion Keep, the dwarves of Anvilmar, the Skyborne of Zephras Isle and many more. Morbin Lightbane no longer sounds like a ghost. Thanks qubo!
  • Tell my chronicle now says how long your story is and how far it has got ("Chapter 3 of 12, about 15 min left"). Turn on "Pause between chapters" in the options and it stops after each chapter, with a Continue button. Thanks Cav3dust!
  • For addon authors: LineSpeakers tells who speaks when in a line read by more than one voice, like the narrator between a character's words or a quote in its speaker's voice (API version 4). Thanks Cav3dust!
  • More voices. Your shares since beta 18: the Wetlands excavation sites, the Twilight's Hammer in Darkshore and Ashenvale, Loch Modan's trampled banner, the Syndicate in Alterac, Tarren Mill's orders, the Screeching Canyon in Thousand Needles, Undercity's abominations and more, with 15 new chapters and recaps for 48 Forever quests. Quests WoW: Forever reworded, like Seasoned Wolf Kabobs and The Angry Scytheclaws, are recorded again. The paladins of Bandarion Keep, the missing Earthen Ring envoys in Silverpine and the cellars beneath Shadowvale have their own chapters now too. Thanks itsthatkidrod, hightechredneck, Alche, John, Komsrade, Azona, Felsling, Levi, Guillimus and Sesshomaru!
  • NPCs who can be a man or a woman always had the same voice: the female Razor Hill Grunts spoke like men, and the male Defias in Westfall's mines like women. Guards, grunts, townsfolk and enemies like these now speak with a voice that fits. Thanks for the reports!
  • A new voice for Executor Arren and the Forsaken who share it, like Innkeeper Bates, High Executor Hadrec and the Twilight Disciples.
  • Some lines left out what they were meant to say, and are recorded again: the descriptions in books and quest texts ("You touch the small white crystal..." on the Windlord and Eldre'Thalas crystals, Gordo's Report, the Librams, Morgan Ladimore's grave), a page of Aegwynn and the Dragon Hunt, and the picture code the Military Ranks book read out. Blizzard's own slips like "the the" are read once, and the war effort greetings say "a lot of peacebloom" instead of "a lot of of a lot of".

1.0.0-beta.18

  • The road ahead. Your chronicle now shows where your race's story goes next: the next zones on its road, with their levels and how far you are in each. When you see a zone's story through, the note says where it continues, and its Journal button opens that zone's page. Thanks Alche for the idea!
  • A new look for Your chronicle. Your numbers in boxes, the road ahead as cards, and where you have been as a timeline: a gem for each zone that lights up once you have seen its story through, and its chapters under it with a tick or a progress bar. Zones fold, and dungeons and attunements show as small badges.
  • A new look for the zone overview. Each chapter you are on is a card with its progress and the quests left in it, including the ones already in your quest log. Chapters you have finished are listed too.
  • A Back button in the journal takes you to the page you came from.
  • Music goes down while Chronicle talks, and comes back up when it's done. Turn it off in the options under "Lower music while talking". Thanks Alche!
  • Replay. A small button on the speaker window plays the last line again, even after it closed. Also /lore replay. Thanks Alche!
  • Test the voices from the options: a short line from the narrator, so you can hear that everything works and set the volume. Thanks Alche!
  • Journal size. Drag the corner at the bottom right of the journal to make it bigger or smaller, or use the slider in the options. Thanks Alche!
  • The quest markers on the map only list the Camping 101 quests for professions you have.
  • About 50 short greetings never played, even though they were voiced: lines like "Hail, paladin!" or "Greetings, young night elf." where the game fills in your class, race or name. They play now. Thanks Alche!

1.0.0-beta.17.1

  • With Plumber, or another addon that moves the game's calendar, Chronicle could get stuck in a loop and show a "stack overflow" error. Thanks Alche!

1.0.0-beta.17

  • Sighs, snorts and laughs. Where the quest text has a character sigh, laugh, cough or hiccup, you now hear it in their voice instead of it being skipped.
  • The narrator reads what people do. Longer actions in a quest text, like a character pacing or handing you something, are read by the narrator in between the character's own words. Quotes are read by whoever is quoted, so Wizbang's Buzzboxes finally speak in their own voice.
  • Greetings that describe a scene instead of someone talking ("The Major nods curtly.", a raptor baring its teeth, a corpse at your feet) are now read by the narrator.
  • More voices. Your shares since beta 16: Farsen's Watch and the Hall of Thanes in Dun Morogh, the Quikswitch errands in Ironforge, more of the wendigo hunt, and the quests WoW: Forever reworded. New chapters and recaps for all of them. Thanks Ivan, Levi and Evilor!
  • Playing with a controller: Chronicle no longer gets in the way of the game's gamepad targeting, which could block actions after talking to an NPC. Thanks Levi!
  • Opening the world map in combat no longer leads to "blocked action" errors.
  • Chronicle's map options are now in the map's own filter menu (the funnel button): story pins, the story panel and quest givers.
  • Chapters to discover on the map now only show up to two levels above you, and quest markers only show "!" for quests you can pick up. The game already shows the "?" for hand-ins.
  • Alt-tabbing in the middle of a line: the voice keeps playing in the background, and Chronicle puts your sound setting back once it has finished, instead of starting the line over. You can turn this off in the options. Thanks Pembo!
  • Chronicle uses less memory, and the journal and map open faster.
  • The Listen button in the map's quest log now lines up with the Back button.

1.0.0-beta.16

  • Dungeons & Raids. A new tab in the journal with every dungeon and raid that has a story: its level, the narrator's introduction, and its chapters (click one to open it). Once you have beaten its last boss, the page also tells how its story ends.
  • Your chronicle. At the top of the story list: your character's whole journey on one page. The places you have been in the order you came to them, with the chapters you finished there, the dungeons you cleared and the attunements you finished. "Tell my chronicle" has the narrator tell it: each zone's epilogue, or where you haven't finished a zone yet, a recap of each chapter you finished there.
  • Holidays. While a holiday is on in the game's calendar, its chapters show up in the journal, and a note tells you it has begun.
  • The road to the raids. Picking up the first step of an attunement brings a note saying where the road leads, with the narrator's introduction and a button to its page in the journal.
  • Who are they? Many people on the Characters page now have a button for the narrator to tell who they are.
  • More voices. The rest of the Zephras Isle story, Thrall's welcome to the Windshapers, the dwarf shaman's Call of Water, the corruption spreading through Teldrassil, Fandral's failed waters and Tyrande, and Auberdine's plea to Stormwind. Plus all your other shares since beta 14, and the narrator's introductions to the attunements.
  • Quests that read differently for your class now have a voice for each version: Sparring Match no longer calls everyone a warrior, and The Windshapers has its own words for shamans.
  • Quests WoW: Forever reworded since the last voice update are recorded again with their new text.
  • Greetings and chatter played from the journal now show their words and the speaker's portrait.
  • Some characters met through a share had the wrong model on the Characters page (Carolai Anise was a man); they now look like themselves.
  • The camping lessons no longer show up three times, once for each starting zone, in the camping chapter.
  • For addon authors: LineText gives the words of a line and how long it plays, and DockSpeaker lets your frame hold the speaker window while it is open (API version 3).

1.0.0-beta.15

  • Attunements. A new tab in the journal for the quest chains that open the great dungeons and raids: Onyxia's Lair, Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, Upper Blackrock Spire, Scholomance, the Shadowforge Key for Blackrock Depths and Naxxramas. Each one has its own page with a short introduction and the steps you have reached: their level, who gives them and where, and what they ask of you. Steps still ahead stay hidden so the story is not spoiled. Click a step to mark its quest giver on the map.
  • Zone overview for Class, Profession and Events. It lists only the chapters for your class and the professions your character has learned. Holiday chapters stay out until you start one.
  • The journal's pages are now written on the paper of WoW: Forever's new spellbook. Thanks Cav3dust for the tip!
  • Recap in the quest window. Handing in a quest you started ages ago? A Recap button under Listen tells the story so far in its chapter: what happened in the step before, or the chapter's introduction. Thanks bananacreampieMMM for the idea!
  • With DialogueUI, handing in a quest and taking the follow-up are voiced again (moving from page to page used to silence them), and the narrator is no longer cut off: the quest giver waits until he has finished. Thanks alche and disgruntledpandas!
  • When an NPC says something out loud, the words are already in the chat bubble over their head, so the speaker window now shows just their face and name, without repeating the text.
  • The camp window by the fire no longer hides behind the speaker window; it moves up above it.
  • The "Previously in..." note (and the notes on flights, level milestones and zone endings) can now be dragged anywhere. Right-click it to put it back at the top. Thanks alche!
  • The "Camping 101" profession quests no longer block a chapter. You only do the ones for your own professions, so the others are never listed as missing; the ones you do still show in the chapter. Thanks alche!
  • Switched from the Story Journal to the full Chronicle? The voices now turn back on by themselves; the journal edition's "Journal only" setting used to stay behind and grey out every Play button. Thanks Ziggo!

1.0.0-beta.14

  • The 30s are voiced. Quests from level 31 to 40 now speak in the new cast: Desolace, Stranglethorn Vale, Arathi Highlands, Dustwallow Marsh, the Badlands, Alterac, the Swamp of Sorrows and the rest of that range, with the greetings and NPC chatter of those zones.
  • The voice pack update promised in beta 13. New voices for the Forever quests and Zephras Isle, everything you shared since beta 12, the lines fixed for the class mix-ups and "an adventurer" (thanks qubo!), description pages read by the narrator (thanks qubo for Peacekeeper Vaaniel!), and the quests WoW: Forever has reworded, like the new training manuals. Thanks agacan, taquitoroyale, bumhug, lifox, itsthatkidrod, qubo, ayu, alche, Cav3dust, karceni, davidbruun, sweepi, pyloauchjan, base2121 and evilor for sharing!
  • Picking up several quests in a row: every quest now gets its voice, one after the other, instead of only the last one you opened. Lines you clicked past are no longer counted as heard. Press X on the speaker window, or right-click it, to skip ahead, and the X now stays in the same place however long the line is (thanks timmeh).
  • The minimap button can now be detached and placed anywhere on the screen, like next to your action bars. Turn on "Detach the button from the minimap" in the options and drag it where you want it. Thanks alche!
  • With subtitles turned off, the speaker window is now slim: just the name, who they are and what they're talking about, without the portrait. Thanks alche!
  • NPCs who say a player's name in the world ("Thank you for the spores, ...") now speak to everyone, saying "adventurer", instead of only to the player whose name was recorded.
  • Chapters no longer get stuck one short when two of their quests share a name, like the two "Delicate Instruments" in Elwynn Forest, for quests done before Chronicle was installed. Thanks BKGreen90HK!
  • If the game's Dialog sound is switched off, Chronicle now tells you at login, and if a voice can't play, the message says why. Thanks Kryx!

1.0.0-beta.13

  • A new look. The journal now matches WoW: Forever's new windows: the gold frame with a round portrait, side tabs for the story, characters, options and sharing, and each chapter as a small card that shows how far you are. It opens, closes and turns its tabs with the game's own sounds.
  • Show what's left. A new option for completionists: every chapter lists the quests you still have to do, by name, level and quest giver, and chapters you haven't found yet show where they start, in the journal, the story panel and the map. Only names and places, never the story. Off by default. Press Zone overview on any chapter for the zone's own page with everything that's left there, and click a missing quest to put a marker on the map where you get it (TomTom's arrow if you use TomTom). Thanks alche for the idea!
  • 10 new chapters for Forever quests: the Windfield Orchard, the Missing Scholar, the Trials of Thendal Grove and Arrival in Valanaar on Zephras Isle, Stalk With the Earthmother in Thunder Bluff, the Harbor of Menethil, Along the Roads of Elwynn, Errands in Stormwind, the Lost Runner in Teldrassil and Trouble in the Snow in Dun Morogh. Plus recaps for many more Forever quests you shared, like the spiders of Gloomrise in Mulgore and the Dragonmaw in the Wetlands.
  • Quest givers on the map now show the level of the new Forever quests, and no longer show a "!" for ones you can't take yet.
  • Came back from alt-tabbing in the middle of a line? It starts over, instead of staying silent until it would have ended. Thanks ayukumiaka!
  • Voice lines no longer cut each other off. A greeting or your own character's line now waits until whoever is talking has finished.
  • NPCs chatting in the world, like the townsfolk of Brill, no longer pop up the speaker window for every line. You still hear them, and the game's speech bubble shows what they say. Thanks alche!
  • The story panel on the map no longer covers the map's corner button, and it has its own option: you can now hide the book pins and keep the panel. The Listen button in the quest log no longer covers the map's full-screen button. Thanks Cav3dust!
  • The "story so far" page now sits beside the Map & Quest Log instead of on top of the quest text. Moved it? Right-click it to put it back.
  • The minimap button now works with minimap button bags like Leatrix Plus. Thanks alche!
  • /lore share now also spots quests that WoW: Forever has reworded, so the voices can keep up with what the game says.
  • For addon authors: the API can now tell which chapter a quest belongs to, with its step and recap, and an addon can suggest turning a map option on or off. The player is always asked first. Thanks Cav3dust!

Coming with the next voice pack update: the new voices for the Forever quests and Zephras Isle, everything you shared since beta 12, lines fixed for the class mix-ups and "an adventurer" (thanks qubo!), description pages read by the narrator (thanks qubo for Peacekeeper Vaaniel!), the quests Forever has reworded, and the first zones above level 30. Thanks agacan, taquitoroyale, bumhug, lifox, itsthatkidrod, qubo, ayu, alche, Cav3dust, karceni, davidbruun, sweepi and pyloauchjan for sharing!

1.0.0-beta.12

  • A new cast. The narrator and the NPCs of levels 1 to 30 and the cities have new, far better voices: over 17,000 lines recorded again, and every character keeps one voice from their first line to their last. Plus the new Forever quests you shared, now voiced. Thanks to everyone who used /lore share!
  • The story on flights. Take a flight and a small note offers the story so far in the zone you're flying to, or its welcome if you haven't been there yet.
  • A word on the way back. Running back to your body as a ghost, the narrator now and then has a short line for you.
  • Level milestones. Every 10th level, a word from the narrator and two or three zones where new stories open up for your level.
  • Works with DialogueUI and Immersion. With DialogueUI, its speaker button plays Chronicle's voices (turn on its text-to-speech option to see it). With Immersion, a speaker button in its talk box replays or stops the line, and Chronicle's speaker window steps aside.
  • For addon authors: a small API to play Chronicle's voices from other addons. Ask on Discord for the details.
  • The options are now Chronicle's own page under Esc > Options > AddOns > Chronicle, with the Discord and Ko-fi links at the bottom.
  • Fixed controller support. Thanks ThommyGunn for the report!

1.0.0-beta.11.1

  • Fixed a Lua error that repeated in combat ("Auras cannot be accessed when secret"). It came from the campfire window checking for a camp; that check now waits until the fight is over. Thanks nomad, Guillimus and thegreatbandito for the reports!

1.0.0-beta.11

  • Every zone has an ending. Finish most of a zone's story and the narrator closes it with an epilogue: what changed because of you, and where the road leads next. It plays at the end of Play story on the map, and Alliance and Horde each get their own. 70 epilogues, from the starting zones to Silithus.
  • Dungeons are introduced and remembered. Walk into a dungeon and the narrator tells you where you are and what waits inside. Defeat its last boss and he tells you what your victory meant. 35 dungeons and raids.
  • The legends, newly voiced. Thrall, Sylvanas, Cairne, Jaina, Magni, Bolvar, Tirion, Vol'jin, Saurfang, Anachronos, Chromie, Hogger, VanCleef and the other big names have new, far better performances, and each of them now sounds like the same person in every line. Thanks Guillimus for pointing out Thrall!
  • By the fire. Sit down at a camp fire and a small window counts down the minute until the camp's benefits, shows the camp objects you hover over and the benefits you already have, and offers a campfire tale about the zone while you wait. Afterwards it shows what the camp gave you. Near a fire, it invites you to sit when a tale is waiting. Turn it off under Options.
  • The story so far now sits on its own parchment page, docked to the quest log, and shows the whole recap. Drag it somewhere else if you like; double-click it to dock it again.
  • Help check the voices. Turn it on under Options, Sharing, and the speaker window gets Good and Bad buttons for the line that is playing. Bad asks what was wrong, and your marks are sent in with /lore share. /lore checks shows how many lines you have checked in the zone.
  • A voice quality pass. Every voice line was checked by machine for wrong words, stutters, and a voice drifting away from its character, and about 1,400 lines that failed were recorded again.
  • Larger subtitles, under Options, While talking.
  • A small "Did you know?" tip in the journal, about something Chronicle can do. Turn it off under Options.
  • Goldshire and Northshire are pronounced right now.
  • Pages written in binary code (the Gnomeregan data cards) are no longer read out digit by digit.
  • A few quests whose text is missing in the game data no longer have the narrator say "null".
  • Chronicle's own texts and voices are now licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 (see LICENSE-CONTENT.md). The code stays under GPL v3.

1.0.0-beta.10

  • Français, Deutsch, Español. On French, German and Spanish game clients the journal, the story map, the options, the buttons and the messages are now in your language, and zone names show the way your game writes them. The story texts and the voices are still in English, so on those clients the voices start turned off. Untick "Journal only" in the options to hear them.
  • The story so far. Select a quest in your quest log that belongs to a story chapter, and a small panel beside the log shows the chapter, which step you are on and a recap of what happened last, with a button to hear it. Only what you have already done, never what comes next.
  • Chronicle: Story Journal. A new, separate download on CurseForge for those who only want the journal: the same addon without the voices and voice packs, about 4 MB.
  • Key bindings. Play or stop the voice, skip to the next line, and open the journal from a key or a controller button. Find them under Key Bindings, then AddOns, then Chronicle. Thanks arclite89!
  • The story map, the zone welcomes and the "Previously in..." reminders now also work on game clients in other languages than English.
  • The story books on the world map now sit below quest icons (from Questie and other addons), so they no longer hide your quests. Thanks Kryxx!
  • With Chronicle's NPC greetings turned off, the game's own greeting voices play again (they stayed muted). Thanks sionnabhan!
  • With "Mute the game's greetings" unchecked, the voice now waits a moment for the NPC's own greeting to finish instead of talking over it. Thanks Kahana82!
  • When an NPC is still finishing a quest line after the window closes, talking to someone else now stops them, so the next NPC's voice plays instead of being skipped. Thanks Pepper!
  • Master Gadrin no longer stutters "we we we" at the start of Report to Orgnil. Thanks Pepper!
  • Quests that more than one NPC hands out no longer play in the wrong voice: "Report to Gryan Stoutmantle" from Marshal Dughan now sounds like Marshal Dughan, not Farmer Saldean. Any others you find are kept for /lore share, so the next release can voice them too.
  • "Play story" on the map now shows the zone's name and its introduction in the speaker window, instead of an empty "Read aloud from the page".
  • Fixed "blocked action" errors with the game's gamepad mode when closing the quest window or opening the map. Thanks TrustmeXD for the report!
  • Some troll voices were redone, among them the troll priestesses, Ur'kyo, Ken'jai and Master Gadrin.
  • Trolls and dwarves now speak with a bit more of their own dialect, and a few Forsaken voices were redone. The subtitles keep the quest text as written.
  • New Forever quests that were picked up from the quest log, where nobody knows yet who gives them, are no longer read by the narrator as if they were the NPC. Share them with /lore share after talking to the quest giver, and they get the right voice.
  • Guard Slip'kik in Dire Maul was re-recorded.
  • The Deadmines and Stonetalon are pronounced right now, in all 201 lines that mention them. Thanks Kal for the report!
  • Story recaps for more new Forever quests: the next step against the poison in Westfall, Camping 101 in Elwynn Forest, Borgus Steelhand's brother in Auberdine, a trail of hidden notes and stashes from the Barrens to Arathi, the new Menethil Harbor quests, the naga threat on Durotar's coast, and the children of Orgrimmar. Thanks to everyone sharing their recordings on the Discord!

1.0.0-beta.9

  • Story map. Open a zone on the world map and a small panel shows its story: the chapters you've started, how far you are, and how many are still to discover (never by name, so no spoilers). Play the zone's story from there. A glowing book marks who to talk to where a chapter you've started continues. On the continent map, hover a zone to see how much of its story you've found.
  • Welcome to new zones. The first time you enter a zone, the narrator offers a short introduction to it: the land, its people and the trouble brewing there, without spoilers. 46 zones, from the starting zones to Silithus. Type /lore welcome to see it again.
  • Horde characters no longer see Alliance chapters and characters from Elwynn Forest and other starting zones in the journal (and the other way around). Some new WoW: Forever quests share a completed flag with their twin in another faction's zone.
  • Zephras Isle takes shape. Recaps and chapters for the shen'dorei story from Thendal Grove to Valanaar: coming of age, the Windshapers, the High Order, the Al'Aketh cult and the battle for the pylon watchtowers.
  • Story recaps for many more new Forever quests in Mulgore, Thunder Bluff, Westfall, Elwynn Forest, Tirisfal Glades, Redridge Mountains, Duskwood and the Barrens, all voiced. Thanks to everyone sharing their recordings on the Discord!
  • NPCs who only speak a language you can't understand (like Frostmane trolls or Scarlet Crusade soldiers for the Horde) are no longer voiced as gibberish.

1.0.0-beta.8

  • New voices for the big names. The leaders and legends you meet up to level 30 now have a voice of their own: Thrall, Sylvanas, Cairne, Baine, Vol'jin, Varimathras, Magni, Bolvar, Tyrande, Fandral, Mekkatorque, Mathias Shaw, Hogger, VanCleef and more. Sylvanas no longer speaks with a night elf's voice. More legends follow as the higher zones open.
  • Everything up to level 30 re-voiced in the new cast, including the new voices for the troll women, the gnome men, the kobolds, the Fallen Hero and the goblins promised last time.
  • One of the three tauren voices sounded too much like an ordinary man and was retired. Busy quest givers who shared a voice with someone nearby (Marshal Dughan, Mankrik, Apothecary Faranell and others) have their own now.
  • Monsters and spirits with the wrong voice fixed: Devlin Agamand was read by a ghostly woman, and a few NPCs switched voice between lines.
  • The speaker window closes by itself again after the last line in the queue (it stayed open when a greeting and a quest played back to back).
  • After you hand in a quest, a small note offers to share the new Forever quests you found that don't have a voice yet. Two clicks instead of typing /lore share. At most once a day, and you can turn it off in Options, Sharing.
  • The option to hide the popup while someone talks is now called "Show the speaker window" (Options, While talking). Turn it off to only hear the voices.
  • Story recaps for new Forever quests in Mulgore, Durotar (Sen'jin Village), Teldrassil, Dun Morogh, Zephras Isle and Tirisfal Glades, and the Camping 101 quests. Thanks to everyone sharing their recordings on the Discord!

1.0.0-beta.7

  • New narrator. Every story recap for levels 1 to 30 is read by a new narrator, in one take instead of glued-together pieces.
  • More quest givers re-voiced in the new cast. Still on the way in the next voice updates: new voices for the troll women (Mai'ah and others), the gnome men (Felix Whindlebolt and others), the kobolds, the Fallen Hero, two goblins in Orgrimmar and a hero voice for male orc characters.
  • The X on the speaker window skips to the next line in the queue instead of stopping everything. Shift-click the X to stop it all.
  • The voice packs now connect to Chronicle through LibStub instead of a global function. Older voice packs keep working until they're updated.

1.0.0-beta.6

  • Code checked with wowlua-ls (the WoW Lua language server): no warnings left. Only current addon API, and party sync can't trip over protected values.

1.0.0-beta.5

  • Every recap, chapter intro and character bio was checked against the quest text: about 400 small corrections (wrong names, details from the wrong quest, spoilers). New recaps for the first new WoW: Forever quests in Northshire, Deathknell and the Valley of Trials.
  • Picking up quests from several NPCs in a row no longer cuts anyone off. Each one waits for the last to finish.
  • Stage directions in quest text (like "<snort>" or "<Angela points to her head.>") are no longer read aloud. In the subtitles they're greyed out, so you can tell them apart from what's said.
  • Every voice type now has its own switch. "Voice quest givers" (formerly "Play voiceover on quests") only turns off the quest givers, so you can keep just the narrator, or just greetings, or any mix. "Journal only" still turns everything off.
  • The options are sorted into sections (General, Voices, While talking, Journal and map, Sharing), and voice settings grey out while "Journal only" is on.
  • Clicking Options during combat no longer just closes the journal. The game doesn't allow its settings window in combat, so Chronicle opens it as soon as the fight is over.
  • A voice that was playing during a /reload no longer keeps talking over the next one.
  • Quest markers on the map no longer show other classes' training letters (like a mage's "Glyphic Parchment" for a warrior).
  • Quests that exist once per starting zone (like "The Adventurer" or "Camping 101") no longer show up in your journal for every starting zone. You only see the one you did.
  • Code cleanup: Chronicle now keeps its data inside the addon instead of in global variables, and uses the current addon API.

1.0.0-beta.4

  • Fixed a Lua error when opening the world map ("Blizzard_MapCanvas.lua:309: assertion failed"). Story and quest pins work as before; right-click on a pin now zooms the map out like everywhere else.
  • New option: Journal only (no voices). One checkbox turns off every voice and the voice pack reminders, so you can use just the journal. You don't need the voice packs for it. The missing-packs popup also has a "Journal only" button.
  • The journal has an Options button at the top, so you don't have to dig through the game menu.
  • Zones in the journal (both The Story and Characters) can be folded open and shut. Only your current zone starts open, and searching opens everything.
  • /lore share now points to the new Chronicle Discord: https://discord.gg/NKevry7mY

1.0.0-beta.3

  • The voice packs now install together with Chronicle in the CurseForge app. Before this, many of you got the addon without any voices. Sorry about that! If that happened to you, update Chronicle and the packs come along.
  • Chronicle now shows a popup if a voice pack is missing or turned off, telling you exactly what to install.

1.0.0-beta.2

  • The voice packs are linked to Chronicle on CurseForge.
  • Chronicle has its own book icon in the AddOns list.

1.0.0-beta.1 (first public beta)

First public release. Please report anything that sounds or looks wrong.

Voiceover

  • Voiced quest text for levels 1 to 30 on both factions: accept, progress and turn-in.
  • Each NPC keeps the same voice, chosen from their race, sex and role.
  • NPC greetings, with an adjustable cooldown (default 10 minutes).
  • Books, plaques and letters in the world are read aloud (player-written mail never is).
  • NPC world speech: says and yells.
  • Your character's reactions on quest turn-in.
  • Talking head frame with a 3D model, subtitles and a progress bar. It can be dragged.
  • Listen/Stop buttons on the quest window and the quest log.
  • Voice keeps playing while the game is in the background (optional).
  • The game's own short NPC greeting and farewell clips are muted, so they don't talk over the voices (optional).
  • Optional stand-in voice (your game's built-in text-to-speech) for lines that aren't voiced yet.

Journal

  • The story is told as zone chapters with summaries, progress bars and search.
  • Characters tab with bios and "given by" links.
  • Recap after turn-in, plus a whole zone's story as an audiobook.
  • "Previously in <zone>" reminder and dungeon introductions.
  • World map pins for the chapters you've started.
  • Optional quest markers on the map (off by default): "!" at quest givers with quests for you, "?" where to hand in finished quests. They switch off while Questie runs.
  • "New in WoW: Forever" marker.
  • Minimap button.

Community

  • Party sync: new quest recordings are shared with group members who run Chronicle. The data is only read and never run as code.
  • /lore share exports your recordings of new content so the next update can voice them.
  • /lore report <note> flags a mispronounced name or a wrong line.
  • /lore share also includes your /lore report notes. /chronicle works as well as /lore.
  • A short welcome the first time you log in. Chronicle also tells you once if a zone's voice pack is missing or turned off.
