It used to be that WoW would not care at all if you called CreateFrame with a frame type of "MOVIEFRAME". But, apparently, now, doing so causes the entire game to crash catastrophically!
One of CharacterMap's frames was being created as a MOVIEFRAME, for no particular reason. This has been changed, and the addon now works again.
