I love the Paranormal Stuff Pack, but I really don't like its 90s Ghostbusters movie vibe — the fluorescent green goo puddles and the whole "funny spookiness" thing. I know it's The Sims 4, so they had to give it a funny vibe, but bleh.
I wanted something darker that would fit a medieval haunted castle, so I made these overrides for my Demon's Lair: Dungeon build — a dark, desecrated monastery. For your game, you can choose which changes you want to use, since I've put everything into separate files.
👹 Objects
- Creepy Hands: Now meaty and bloody.
- Goo Puddles: They look more like normal water now, which makes sense since they tend to appear near objects like sinks, bathtubs, showers, and so on. They still have that greenish, unhealthy glow at certain angles or under certain lighting, but they're much harder to spot around the house. That's the point, really — they're supposed to look more natural and hidden.
- Creepy Doll → Bizarre Idol: I replaced the Creepy Doll with a burnt and destroyed Bizarre Idol (the protective totem you'd put around the house to ward off evil spirits). I think it fits an old castle a bit better. Warning: This affects all Doll objects, including the ones in Build/Buy mode.
- Floor Runes: Changed their color to black. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to edit the light coming out of them, but I think they still look a bit cooler this way.
🩸 Specters
There are two options for Specters. You need to choose one of these files — don't use both at the same time!
Option 1: NO MORE GREEN SPECTERS!!
- All the green Specters are now red, angy, and spit fire! They're all scary to your Sims, but they won't start actual fires on the lot until you neglect the spiritual balance of the house past a certain threshold. You can still interact with them, although you'll quickly get the scared moodlet.
Option 2: ALMOST NO SPECTERS AT ALL
- The Specters that do appear will still be red, scary, and angy, but you'll hardly ever see them.
I personally really like the red Specters and enjoy watching them spit fire, but I know some people hate them and call them annoying Pokemons. So, for anyone who'd rather not deal with them so often, I made this alternative. It reduces the probability of Specters appearing on the lot to just 1%.
I didn't want to remove them completely, as that could cause conflicts with too many things.
👻 Guidry and Temperance
I also changed some of the text associated with Guidry and Temperance, so you can turn them into whatever kind of spirit or evil ghost you want for your game.
- Guidry is now referred to as the Lingering Soul or the Restless Soul.
- Temperance is now referred to as a powerful demon — a Greater Demon, or simply a Demon.
I think this wording keeps things general enough for you to come up with your own lore for them. This is also a separate optional file, so you don't have to use it if you'd rather keep their original names and descriptions.
You can also customize their appearance, names, voices, and even gender using another mod — Control Any Sim by TitanNano (I think the mod was originally created by TitanNano, at least). You can take control of them when they appear on the lot, go into CAS, give them whatever monster-themed makeover you want, and then exit CAS. They'll keep their new appearance and other changes for the rest of your save.
I've done this multiple times in my own game, and can confirm that it works without causing any issues.
Note:
If you choose to download the text override, it'll also change some of the lore surrounding Haunted House Residential lots. I've changed the lot introduction, several mentions of Paranormal Investigators, and the description of the Bizarre Idol.
The new wording references the Horadric Order, an ancient brotherhood of mages from Diablo lore dedicated to fighting evil.
You can still play the Paranormal Investigator career as usual! I've only changed a few lore-related text descriptions for Haunted House Residential lots, not the career itself.
📂 Installation
Download whichever overrides you want to use. If you download more than one file, I recommend creating a new folder in your Mods directory called Paranormal Stuff or something similar, just to keep everything organized.
And remember: you can combine the other overrides as you like, but you must choose only one of the two Specter files.
⚠️ Compatibility
This mod may not be compatible with other mods that override the same objects or text from the Paranormal Stuff Pack.
🕯️ Things I'm Still Working On
There are a couple of things I haven't got around to fixing yet, but I'll likely update the mod again later.
- Séance Table messages: I haven't touched the notifications that appear after you use Commune with the Departed yet. The messages from the ghosts are currently too modern for medieval gameplay, and there are a lot of them. It'll probably take me a while to find and update them all, but I do plan to get to them in the near future.
- Blue Specters: They've become more brownish than I intended. Unfortunately, all Specters use the same base texture, so I'll have to see if I can find a way around that.
I haven't noticed any other issues so far, but let me know in the comments if you spot anything! I suspect there are more bits of text in the pack that mention modern things and could use some changes, so I'll probably be coming back to this mod from time to time.
That's it. Have fun!
