Well, turns out this whole time since the first version, I've been missing a semicolon after the JAVA Args in the server settings.cfg.  I remember 1 person on discord coming forward to me with an issue, but I never figured it out... until I had the same problem today while remaking my linux server.... So consider this a "silent" update that only affects new linux based hosts.

 

Quick note: Make sure you're properly configured to use Java version 8 for this old Minecraft version 1.12.2.
