Dead in the Dark

A dark, zombie-infested survival modpack that expands combat, exploration, magic, progression, world generation, and survival into a brutal post-apocalyptic Minecraft experience.

Dead in the Dark is the kind of Minecraft world I’ve always wanted to survive in: beautiful enough to keep pulling you forward, dangerous enough to make every decision matter, and focused enough to feel expansive without drowning Minecraft beneath hundreds of mods. Built with 101 carefully chosen mods and the Faithful 64x resource pack, it expands almost every part of the game while still looking and feeling unmistakably like Minecraft.

The apocalypse has already begun when you arrive.

Zombie Horde turns zombies from background enemies into the defining threat of the world. They appear constantly, become increasingly dangerous, and can tear through structures that would normally make you feel safe. A wooden house is no longer an automatic first-night solution. Early survival is about movement, scavenging, choosing your shelter carefully, and figuring out what materials can actually stand between you and the dead.

And zombies are far from the only things hunting you.

Caves contain creatures that can turn an ordinary mining trip into a desperate escape. The world is populated by more hostile monsters, including creatures you may have never encountered before. Sometimes you will know exactly what killed you. Other times you may only realize something was nearby when it is already attacking.

Darkness makes everything worse.

Night and underground spaces can become genuinely difficult to see through, and spending too long in sufficiently dark places can itself become dangerous. Light is therefore more than decoration. Torches, lanterns, visibility, and preparation become part of surviving exploration.

Combat has been expanded dramatically. Where you strike an enemy now matters, with headshots, localized damage, dismemberment, improved melee combat, and firearms giving you far more ways to take down the undead.

Progression goes far beyond combat. Mining has more resources to uncover. Furnaces are expanded through improved smelting techniques. Farm crops found around the world make food preparation and farming feel like actual survival systems instead of an afterthought. Fishing has more to discover. Horses, backpacks, brewing, alchemy, treasure, and exploration all have more depth than they do in vanilla.

Even the quieter parts of the world have been expanded. Improved terrain and structures enhanced villages, rivers, wildlife, seasons, ambient sound, realistic sound physics, falling leaves, and other environmental additions make the world feel more alive even when nothing is actively trying to kill you.

And there is a lot of world to explore.

The Lost Cities can turn exploration into scavenging through enormous abandoned urban environments. Many mods make it difficult to travel very far without finding something worth investigating.

That creates the central rhythm of Dead in the Dark.

Leave shelter because you need something.

Travel farther than you intended.

Find something incredible.

Realize it is getting dark.

Try to make it home.

Sometimes you return carrying weapons, food, treasure, rare materials, or something you didn't even know existed.

Sometimes you return with almost nothing.

Sometimes simply getting back through the door is the reward.

Eventually, though, the balance begins to change. The survivor who once spent the night hiding wherever they could starts building somewhere permanent. Better materials become available. Storage fills up. Farms begin producing enough food to matter. Weapons improve. Walls become harder to breach. You learn which creatures you can fight and which sounds mean you should leave. And then, eventually, you build the first place that actually feels safe. That feeling has to be earned.

The world is beautiful. The world is enormous. The world wants you dead.

Welcome to Dead in the Dark. Bring a light.
