World Evolution

Unlisted
A living-world mod where player activity reshapes regions, wildlife, forests, settlements, and local history over time.

World Evolution

Every place remembers.

World Evolution is an immersive living-world mod that allows different parts of your Minecraft world to develop their own identity, history, benefits, dangers, wildlife, vegetation, terrain, and settlements.

Instead of treating every chunk as an empty and unchanging location, World Evolution records what players do in each area. Logging, mining, farming, combat, deaths, and exploration gradually leave a persistent influence on the surrounding region. As these activities accumulate, the region develops a recognizable character and begins reacting to the way it is being used.

A quiet wilderness may eventually become a heavily logged timberland. A mountain filled with mining activity can develop into a dangerous mining district. Productive farmland near a village can become a prosperous breadbasket, while repeated combat and player deaths can turn an area into a battleground.

The goal of World Evolution is to make exploration, settlement, and long-term survival feel more meaningful. Your world is not only generated around you—it remembers you.

Core Features

Persistent Chunk Memory

Every loaded chunk can record several categories of player activity:

  • Logging: Trees and wood-related blocks removed by players.
  • Mining: Underground excavation and resource extraction.
  • Farming: Repeated agricultural activity and harvesting.
  • Combat: Hostile encounters and combat pressure.
  • Deaths: Player deaths that leave dangerous historical scars.
  • Exploration: Player visits and continued regional presence.

This information is stored as persistent world data. Leaving the area, restarting the game, or restarting a server does not immediately erase its history.

Activity is converted into an influence score from 0 to 100. Each category can progress through several development levels:

  • Untouched
  • Trace
  • Active
  • Established
  • Specialized
  • Dominant

This progression makes regional development gradual. A single broken tree or short visit will not immediately transform an entire region, but repeated activity over time can create lasting consequences.

Regional Identity System

World Evolution evaluates a region using a weighted 3×3 chunk area around the player. Nearby chunks contribute to a shared regional identity, allowing the effects to feel broader and more natural than a single-chunk boundary.

A region can develop into one of several identities.

Wildlands

A quiet region without a dominant form of player pressure.

Wildlands represent places that remain mostly untouched. They have no major regional benefit or danger and preserve the feeling of unexplored wilderness.

Timberland

A region shaped by strong logging pressure and forest disturbance.

Possible effects include:

  • Planted saplings receiving additional growth opportunities.
  • Faster forest recovery under the right conditions.
  • Passive wildlife becoming restless and gaining temporary movement speed.
  • Forest-themed visual feedback and ambient particles.
  • Chronicle entries documenting major logging pressure.

Timberland does not simply reward deforestation. It represents a disturbed forest attempting to recover while local wildlife reacts to the changing environment.

Mining District

A region dominated by mining and underground activity.

Possible effects include:

  • Players gaining Haste I while mining below Y=64.
  • Faster underground resource extraction.
  • Underground hostile creatures gaining Strength I.
  • Smoke-like ambient feedback that reflects industrial pressure.
  • Chronicle entries recording the beginning of a mining boom.

Mining Districts create a risk-and-reward system. The region becomes more useful for mining, but the underground also becomes more dangerous.

Breadbasket

A region shaped by intensive farming and agricultural prosperity.

Possible effects include:

  • Crops receiving additional growth opportunities.
  • Passive animals recovering under prosperous conditions.
  • Village-related benefits and temporary trade discounts.
  • Agricultural ambient feedback around active areas.
  • Chronicle entries recording a local harvest era.

Breadbasket regions reward players who establish farms and consistently develop the same area instead of treating agriculture as a disconnected activity.

Battleground

A region shaped by repeated combat, danger, and death.

Possible effects include:

  • Hostile creatures receiving Strength I.
  • Hostile creatures receiving Speed I.
  • Clear danger notifications when entering the region.
  • Ash-like or ominous ambient visual feedback.
  • Chronicle entries for rising conflict and death scars.

Battlegrounds are intended to make heavily contested locations feel different from peaceful settlements. A place where many battles occurred can remain dangerous even after the original conflict has ended.

Frontier

A heavily traveled region that has become a recognized crossroads.

Frontier regions represent locations shaped primarily by player presence and exploration rather than one specialized industry. They mark areas that have become familiar, traveled, and connected through repeated visits.

Regional Reactions

Regional identities are not only descriptive labels. When an influence reaches the required threshold, World Evolution can apply gameplay reactions associated with the region.

These reactions can include:

  • Additional sapling growth opportunities.
  • Additional crop growth opportunities.
  • Mining Haste below Y=64.
  • Stronger underground hostile mobs.
  • Faster or regenerating passive wildlife.
  • Village prosperity and trade-related benefits.
  • Stronger and faster hostile mobs in dangerous regions.
  • Action-bar messages when entering an important region.
  • Vanilla particle effects representing regional conditions.

The effects end when the player leaves the affected region or when the regional influence decays below the required threshold.

Individual reaction categories can be enabled or disabled through the mod configuration.

Regional Decay

World history is persistent, but it is not necessarily permanent.

When a region remains inactive, its influence can begin to fade after a configurable number of Minecraft days. Once the grace period ends, influence points are gradually removed each day.

This allows abandoned regions to recover naturally instead of remaining permanently specialized. A former mining district may slowly lose its mining identity, and an old battleground may eventually become quiet again.

Server owners can configure:

  • The number of inactive days before decay begins.
  • The number of influence points lost per inactive day.
  • The interval between regional updates.

Decay allows long-running worlds to continue changing instead of becoming permanently locked by early player activity.

Regional Chronicle

Important developments are recorded as regional history milestones.

Possible chronicle events include:

  • Arrival: Travelers make an area into a known frontier.
  • Timber Pressure: Heavy logging reshapes the surrounding woodland.
  • Mining Boom: Mining activity becomes established beneath the region.
  • Harvest Era: Repeated harvests turn the area toward agricultural abundance.
  • Conflict Rise: Hostile conflict leaves a permanent historical mark.
  • Death Scar: Repeated player deaths make the area known as a dangerous place.

Chronicle entries contain the Minecraft day and the chunk where the event occurred. This gives regions a readable history instead of only displaying numerical statistics.

Players and server administrators can inspect nearby history using the included commands.

Regional Wildlife Variants

World Evolution adds persistent biome-derived variants to supported vanilla animals.

Supported animals include:

  • Cows
  • Pigs
  • Sheep
  • Chickens
  • Wolves
  • Horses

Each supported animal can receive one of four regional variants:

  • Woodland
  • Meadow
  • Highland
  • Dryland

The variant is selected according to the biome and region where the animal belongs. Each variant includes a distinct regional texture, allowing animals from different environments to look visually different.

Regional animal data is persistent and synchronized between the server and connected clients. Variants are designed to remain attached to the animal instead of randomly changing whenever the area reloads.

The system also includes variant inheritance support, allowing regional visual identity to remain meaningful across animal populations.

Regional animal assignment can be disabled through the configuration if a player or server owner prefers vanilla appearances.

Improved Forest Generation

World Evolution expands eligible forest biomes with bounded, biome-aware world-generation features.

Canopy Features

Additional canopy formations make forests feel denser and more layered. Placement checks the surrounding biome and surface conditions to avoid uncontrolled or inappropriate generation.

Natural Clearings

Forests can generate natural open spaces instead of appearing as uninterrupted walls of trees. These clearings create:

  • More varied forest silhouettes.
  • Natural locations for camps and buildings.
  • Better visibility while exploring.
  • A more believable balance between dense canopy and open terrain.

Clearing generation uses bounded placement rules and a configurable one-in-N generation chance.

Forest-generation settings affect newly generated chunks. Existing terrain will not be completely regenerated automatically.

Shaped Overworld Terrain

World Evolution includes a custom World Evolution world preset with its own Overworld noise settings and regional density blending.

The terrain system retains familiar Minecraft biome placement while reshaping the physical terrain through custom density functions. The preset supports the standard Overworld height range from Y=-64 to Y=320, including:

  • Aquifers
  • Ore veins
  • Vanilla-compatible surface rules
  • Biome-aware terrain surfaces
  • Regional terrain blending
  • Standard Nether generation
  • Standard End generation

For the full terrain experience, select the World Evolution world type when creating a new world.

A new world is strongly recommended because terrain, settlements, forest canopies, and natural clearings are generated when chunks are created.

Specialized Settlements

World Evolution includes four complete settlement families. These structures use bounded jigsaw generation, biome eligibility rules, terrain-slope validation, dedicated roads, decorations, building pools, and custom chest loot.

Forest Hamlet

A woodland settlement designed around forestry and life beneath the canopy.

Possible structures include:

  • Forester cottages
  • Sawmills
  • Woodland shrines
  • Small animal pens
  • Forest roads
  • Decorative structures

Farming Village

An agricultural settlement centered around food production.

Possible structures include:

  • Farmhouses
  • Granaries
  • Irrigated crop plots
  • Windmills
  • Agricultural roads
  • Village decorations

Mining Town

A resource-focused settlement adapted to mining regions.

Possible structures include:

  • Mine entrances
  • Smithies
  • Ore storage buildings
  • Retaining walls
  • Mining roads
  • Industrial decorations

Frontier Fort

A defended settlement intended for dangerous or remote territory.

Possible structures include:

  • Gatehouses
  • Barracks
  • Watchtowers
  • Protected yards
  • Fortified roads
  • Defensive decorations

Each settlement family has:

  • Multiple possible starting pieces.
  • Dedicated road networks.
  • Building and decoration pools.
  • Structure terminators to control generation boundaries.
  • Biome-specific placement rules.
  • Dedicated loot tables.
  • Terrain and slope validation.
  • Bounded generation to reduce uncontrolled structure expansion.

These settlements are generated as part of world generation and are most reliably experienced in newly generated chunks.

Commands

World Evolution includes commands for inspecting the systems operating inside the world.

Available commands include:

  • /worldevolution version Displays the mod version and internal data schema versions.

  • /worldevolution chunk info Displays the current chunk’s logging, mining, farming, combat, death, and exploration influence.

  • /worldevolution animal inspect Inspects the supported animal the player is looking at and reports its regional variant.

Some commands may require operator permissions.

Configuration

World Evolution provides server-side configuration options for controlling its major systems.

Configurable features include:

  • Visual action-bar messages and particles.
  • Forest and plant-growth reactions.
  • Passive animal reactions.
  • Mining benefits and underground dangers.
  • Village prosperity reactions.

Design Philosophy

World Evolution is built around one central idea:

The world should remember how it was used.

Most Minecraft worlds visually change only when the player manually places or removes blocks. World Evolution adds another layer: systems that observe repeated activity, calculate local influence, create regional identities, record important milestones, and produce benefits or consequences.

A forest can remember industrial logging. A mountain can remember generations of miners. A village can reflect agricultural prosperity. A battlefield can remain dangerous long after the battle ends. An animal can carry the visual identity of the environment where it belongs. A settlement can reflect the resources and conditions of its biome.

World Evolution turns the Minecraft world from a passive backdrop into a place with memory, identity, and history.
