Wildlore

Every creature is an individual: mobs roll real sizes, animals are male or female, bloodlines carry hidden traits, and breeding starts real pregnancies with twins. Study your animals and build a herd worth keeping.

Every creature is an individual

Wildlore is an animal genetics and breeding mod for Minecraft. Every mob rolls its own size, animals are born male or female, bloodlines carry hidden traits, and breeding starts a real pregnancy with a due date, a visibly expecting mother, and sometimes twins or triplets. None of it is visible until you have earned it: feeding, taming, studying and breeding a species builds your knowledge of it, level by level.

It works on vanilla and modded creatures alike, and every module can be tuned or turned off in the config.

Mob sizes on a real curve

Every mob, vanilla or modded, rolls a size when it first appears. Most look normal, plenty are a little off, and the occasional giant or runt is genuinely rare. Size carries into max health, monster damage, and how much a creature drops, so a truly huge cow is worth keeping and a runt might not be. Slimes and bosses sit the system out.

Male and female animals, and breeding that needs both

Animals are male or female. Breeding needs one of each, so part of running a farm is learning which of your animals is which. Constructs, slimes and bosses are sexless, and you can exempt anything with a tag or the config.

Bloodline traits and selective breeding

Creatures can carry hidden traits, from common up to legendary: Hardy, Ironhide, Fleet, Titan Blood, Prime Stock, Fertile, Broodmother and more. Traits change stats, yields, litter odds, gestation time, even the sex ratio of offspring. When both parents carry the same trait it breeds true far more often, family trees are tracked, and pairing close relatives weakens the line. Long-term selective breeding actually goes somewhere.

Real pregnancies

Breeding a valid pair starts a pregnancy instead of popping out a baby. The due date rolls on a bell curve, the mother visibly rounds out as her time approaches, and litters can be singles, twins or triplets depending on the bloodline.

The zoology system: knowledge you earn per species

Feeding, breeding, milking, shearing, taming, witnessing births and studying creatures all build per-species knowledge across five levels:

Level Name You learn to see
1 Acquainted Sex
2 Handler Size
3 Keeper Traits
4 Breeder Pregnancy and its progress
5 Zoologist Exact due times, litter sizes, plus a small loot bonus

The Field Journal and the spyglass

The Field Journal is crafted from a book and a feather. Open it for a searchable record of every species you have met: portrait, knowledge level, discovered traits, and a guide. Use it on a creature to study that individual. Holding the journal (or a spyglass) shows an inspection card for the creature in your crosshair, and peering through the spyglass reads creatures from a distance. Prefer your spyglass plain? One config switch and only the journal brings up the card.

Plays well with other mods

No mixins, everything runs through NeoForge events and vanilla systems:

  • Sizes use the vanilla scale attribute, so modded mobs (GeckoLib included) and render optimizers like Sodium and Embeddium work as is.
  • Any modded animal that breeds the vanilla way gets pregnancies. Mods with their own reproduction are left alone.
  • Drop scaling covers modded loot tables, and never scales equipment drops.
  • Every module (sizes, sexes, traits, pregnancy, zoology) has its own master switch, and blacklists accept modid:* wildcards.

FAQ

Does it work with modded animals? Yes. Sizes, sexes, traits and pregnancies apply to any mob that uses vanilla systems.

Is it server side or client side? Both sides on 1.21.1 NeoForge. Gameplay runs on the server; the journal and inspection card draw on the client.

Can I turn parts of it off? Every module has a master switch, and the curves, weights and windows behind them are all in the config.

Where do I report a bug? On the issue tracker.

Requires ZambieLib.
