What's new
Wan's Hologram Items 1.0.0 — Changelog
First version. Released for NeoForge, Forge and Fabric, from Minecraft 1.16.5 to 26.2.
Why it exists
Look at a pile of drops after a fight, a mined-out cave or a broken chest and try to tell what is in it. You squint at little spinning models, walk over everything, and find out what you picked up only when it is already in your inventory.
Wan's Hologram Items writes it above the item instead. The name first, and then as much as you want: the full tooltip, what a shulker box holds, how that block is crafted.
It runs only on your client. Nothing to install on the server, and it works on any server you join.
The hologram
Every dropped item gets its name and stack size floating above it, facing you.
- Full details: the whole vanilla tooltip, rarity colours included, in a tooltip frame. Damageable items add their remaining durability.
- Container contents: shulker boxes, bundles and compatible modded containers show a miniature of their inventory, using the game's own inventory texture, with every item in its slot.
- Recipes: a miniature workstation showing how the item is made. Crafting table, furnace, blast furnace, smoker, campfire, stonecutter, smithing table and modded recipes that follow the same rules. If there is more than one recipe, a page counter appears and the arrow keys flip through them.
- Despawn timer: how long the item has left before it disappears. It turns red in the last 30 seconds.
- Light ray: a short animated ray above every drop, so you can find it from a distance or in tall grass.
Everything except the name is off by default: turn on only what you need.
When it shows up
Names, tooltips, inventories and recipes each have their own mode:
- Always
- While looking at the item
- While holding a key (Tab by default)
So you can keep names always on, and open the full tooltip only for the item you are looking at.
It does not see through walls
A hologram shows up only if you can actually see the item. Behind a wall, it stays hidden. It does not flicker at a corner: once it is visible, it stays visible for a moment even if a block edge gets in the way.
Want to find items through blocks anyway? There is an option for that.
Filters and distance
- Maximum distance in chunks. On 0 it follows your render distance.
- Whitelist: when it is not empty, only the listed items get a hologram.
- Blacklist: the listed items never get one.
Both accept single IDs (minecraft:cobblestone) or a whole mod (minecraft:*).
Key bindings
- H: turn all holograms on or off
- Tab: show holograms set to "while holding a key"
- ← / →: previous and next recipe page
All of them can be changed in Controls.
Settings
The settings screen opens from the Mods menu, or from the Wan's Hologram Items button that the mod adds to the Options screen. Every option has a description when you hover over it.
Legendary Tooltips
With Legendary Tooltips installed, holograms use its frames, textures and rarity colours: an epic item above the ground looks the same as in your inventory. It is optional; without it you get the vanilla tooltip.
Versions
| Loader | Minecraft |
|---|---|
| NeoForge | 1.21.1 |
| Forge | 1.20.1, 1.19.2, 1.18.2, 1.16.5 |
| Fabric | 26.2, 1.21.11, 1.21.1, 1.20.1, 1.19.2 |
Fabric needs Fabric API. Forge and NeoForge need nothing else.
Good to know
- 1.21.11 and 26.2: these versions draw the world differently and do not let a tooltip border be drawn in it. Holograms use the vanilla tooltip look even with Legendary Tooltips installed, and item previews inside tooltips (bundles, maps) are not shown. Container previews work as usual.
- Recipes on servers, 1.21.2 and later: Minecraft no longer sends the whole recipe list to players. In singleplayer you see every recipe; on a server you see the recipes you have unlocked in your recipe book.
- 1.16.5: the settings are buttons that change value on each click, because that version of the game has no toggle buttons.
