This is an update and port/rewrite of Tamaized's Void Fog (https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/void-fog) for Fabric and Minecraft 1.14 (and beyond).
Just like the original, this modbrings back the void fog of versions prior to Minecraft 1.8 with some slight changes.
Changes in 1.14 - Slightly smoothed the fogs encroach/retreat animation - The fog will be pushed off when standing in brightly-lit areas (like around torches) - Added a secret big boi mode (are you a big boi?) - Added an option to configure particle density
Love it, can't figure out what big boy does. I've got it on, in survival. and I've tried walking around without any light source but nothing seems to be happening, wondering if its a jumpscare
what does big boy mode do?
can u do it for forge?
idk if this is compatible with sodium, and i dont know if the 1.16 version works with 1.16.1
Is the fog distance configurable?
I don't understand why void fog was removed in 1.8, but I'm happy we have this mod :)
What does Big Boi mode actually do? . . . also apparently the fog isn't shown with Optifine installed.
I haven't really tested with optifine, so I can't really expect it to work properly with it installed. I suggest trying with one of the other performance/aesthetic mods available that replace Optifine to see if it does better.
Big Boi mode is for big bois.
In reply to S0llace:
Yeah i think it doesn't work because of optifine, but personally i dont only use optifine for the performance, but for the custom textures and models that we can make using it. like making a texture that changes what it is by what lore or name it has and models like making boats have pig models
"t for the custom textures and models that we can make using it. like making a texture that changes what it is by what lore or name it has and models like making boats have pig models"
I suggest trying with one of the other performance/aesthetic mods available that replace Optifine to see if it does better. Yes, that includes connected textures, better grass, custom item textures, and custom block models. That is what I meant by aesthetic.

In reply to S0llace:
optifine lets particles render but they just render in tall pillars...
In reply to RyanCR5:
nvm i just realized that the fog doesn't render
I don't support Optifine and have no way to test my mods with it either, so your options are to report it as an issue to optifine's dev, or get rid of Optifine.
Hi, I liked your mod and I made a Russian translation for the mod.
The translation is not professional, but very good.
If you are interested in translation, then you can download it using this link.

Why did I want to do this? I just love doing it for free.
If it's not difficult to write, you have implemented my translation in your mod.
I just tried this out, and I love the mod! Thank you! I feel like I was one of the few people that loved the void fog, and I was really disappointed when Mojang removed it completely. I would have prefered it to be an option but disabled by default. I have a suggestion though, could we possibly have a toggle for the fog in other dimensions?
A side note, for anyone also using Sodium: On servers, this mod will cause the game to stop rendering chunks like crazy, bringing your view distance down to one chunk. Disabling "Use Fog Occlusion" under advanced video settings solves this, at the cost of some preformance.
It appears that there is no fog under water. It looks as if you have night vision until you go down below a certain point where it becomes normal. Also, when spelunking the fog tends to instantly shrink on you in certain places instead of smoothly closing in like it does when it retreats and the transition between the overworld and the void fog is kinda abrupt. I don't know if some of it is intended and where to put it so I though I'd share it here.
Even so, this is an amazing mod, thanks for bringing back this mechanic to the game, you're the best! ツ
Thanks for mentioning that! I'll be sure to test it with water and make sure it works correctly in there. :)
may we have a forge port? this is soo nostalgic and I'd love to use this mod but I don't use fabric...thanks!
No.
If you need a forge version go use the original one. I don't develop for forge.
The fog doesn't seem to work with Optifine unfortunately (tried on 1.15.2 with Optifine pre9 and optifabric beta4). The particles does work though. I can confirm it does work fine on the same config with those two mods removed.
EDIT: being in a minecart or in a boat on concerned levels does bring the fog near the player regardless of the light level. Even if right next to a torch and the option "Hide in lit areas" is checked. Getting out of the vehicle reverts to the intended behaviour.
Also, maybe the transition between both fog distances could be even "smoother", it looks almost like the fog just jumps on your face xD
Great mod otherwise!
