Description
Villager Trade Swap
Swap out a single villager trade without losing the rest.
Your librarian finally rolled Mending, but its second trade is useless paper? Villager Trade Swap adds a small swap button next to every trade in the vanilla trading screen. Click it, and only that trade is replaced with a new one. Everything else about the villager stays exactly as it was.
Features
- One trade at a time. Each trade has its own swap button. The other trades, the villager's level, XP and reputation never change.
- Any unlocked trade. Swap trades at any level, whether you have traded with them before or not.
- Vanilla rules. The new trade is rolled from the vanilla trade pool of the level that trade was unlocked at, so a Journeyman trade stays a Journeyman trade.
- No duplicates. A villager never ends up with two trades of the same kind at one level, just like vanilla. A book can still become a book with another enchantment.
- Small price. Each swap costs 1 emerald by default, taken from your inventory. Server owners can change the cost or make it free. Swapping is always free in Creative.
- Your prices. Swapped trades get your reputation and Hero of the Village discounts right away.
- Hide the buttons. A small toggle above the trade list shows or hides the swap buttons, and remembers your choice.
- Modded trades included. Trades added by other mods through the standard villager trade events can show up in a swap.
- Cartographer friendly. Explorer map lookups are cached, so swapping a cartographer's trades doesn't cause lag.
- Works in existing worlds. Villagers from before the mod was installed can be swapped too.
- Safe to remove. Without the mod, villagers keep the trades you swapped in.
Smaller trading halls
A villager can only have one enchanted book trade per level, the same as in vanilla. A librarian has enchanted books on levels 1 to 4, so one librarian can hold up to four books of your choice. That's a lot fewer librarians to house.
Versions
| Minecraft | Loader | Requires | File |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.21.1 | NeoForge | NeoForge 21.1.1 or newer | villagertradeswap-neoforge-1.21.1 |

Pick the file that matches your loader. On Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and Forge are separate loaders, so each has its own file. On Minecraft 1.20.1, the single Forge file runs on both Forge and NeoForge.
Client and server
- Forge / NeoForge: required on both the client and the server.
- Fabric: install on both sides to use the swap buttons. Players without the mod can still join and trade normally. A client with the mod on a server without it simply shows no buttons.
Configuration
- Server:
config/villagertradeswap.json, for example{"rerollCost": 1}. Any whole number from 0 to 64; 0 makes swapping free. - Client:
config/villagertradeswap-client.jsonstores whether the swap buttons are shown. You normally change this with the toggle in the trading screen.
FAQ
Does it work on wandering traders? No, only on regular villagers. Wandering traders have no levels and their trades are temporary anyway.
Can I swap a trade I already used? Yes. Every unlocked trade can be swapped. The new trade starts with full stock.
What happens if I remove the mod? Villagers keep the trades they have at that moment and continue as vanilla villagers.
Does it work with Villager Trade Peek? Yes. Swapping a trade doesn't change the future trades that Villager Trade Peek shows. Use Peek to see what a villager will unlock, and Swap to fix the trades it already has.
Does it work with Trade Cycling? Yes. Trade Cycling rerolls all level 1 trades; this mod swaps a single trade at any level. They can be installed together.
Can I use it in my modpack? Yes, go ahead. The mod is licensed under MIT.
