Velvet Night

Beautifully darker nights and caves with moon phases, shader support, and a configurable non-black visibility floor.

Velvet Night — Darkness, Rebuilt

Velvet Night transforms Minecraft’s nights, caves, and enclosed spaces into deeper, more immersive environments while preserving the beauty and usefulness of the world’s light sources.

Its lighting system has been completely rebuilt. Instead of applying a flat black filter, Velvet Night reshapes Minecraft’s final lightmap using the game’s actual block-light and skylight levels. Moon phases, weather, time of day, dimensions, caves, and nearby light sources all influence what you see.

The default experience remains dark but readable. Players seeking a greater challenge can use the True Dark preset, which allows genuinely unlit areas to reach complete darkness without weakening torches, lanterns, lava, emissive blocks, or other light sources.

Darkness that reacts naturally to the world.

  • Deep, atmospheric nights and enclosed caves.

  • A completely rebuilt 256-cell lightmap system.

  • Adjustable overall, outdoor, and cave darkness.

  • A configurable minimum visibility level.

  • Full moon-phase lighting variation.

  • Rain and weather-based darkness.

  • Smooth sunset and sunrise transitions.

  • Gamma and fullbright resistance in genuinely unlit areas.

  • Protected torches, lanterns, lava, emissive blocks, and other block lights.

  • Support for Night Vision, Conduit Power, lightning flashes, and the Darkness effect.

  • Separate controls for the Overworld, Nether, End, modded dimensions, and excluded biomes.

  • Fully client-side—servers do not need Velvet Night installed.

Designed around light—not a black overlay.

Velvet Night does not simply cover the screen with darkness. It reshapes Minecraft’s final lightmap according to the amount and type of light available throughout the scene.

Illuminated areas remain attractive and useful while unlit spaces become meaningfully dark. A torch in a cave still matters. A lantern remains warm and inviting. Moonlit terrain can remain faintly visible while a sealed underground chamber becomes nearly impossible to navigate without light.

Choose how dark your world becomes.

When Velvet Night starts for the first time, a welcome screen asks how dark you want the game to be.

Four ready-to-use presets are included:

  • Gentle — Richer atmosphere with generous visibility.

  • Velvet — The intended balanced experience: deep, colorful, and playable.

  • Realistic — Very dark nights and caves with only faint silhouettes.

  • True Dark — The maximum setting, allowing genuinely unlit areas to reach complete darkness.

Press F8 while playing to open the rebuilt configuration menu. Every main lighting setting can be adjusted without leaving your world, including:

  • Overall darkness.

  • Outdoor night strength.

  • Cave darkness.

  • Minimum visibility.

  • Moon-phase influence.

  • Block-light protection.

  • Night color tint.

  • Shader strength and profile.

Made for vanilla lighting and shader users.

Velvet Night works without shaders and includes multiple compatibility layers for players who use them:

  • Live Iris and Oculus support for recognized Complementary lighting paths.

  • Live Iris and Oculus support for recognized BSL lighting paths.

  • Standard lightmap compatibility for other shader packs.

  • Safe fallback when a shader version or lighting path is not recognized.

  • Adjustable shader strength and shader profile.

  • Never modifies shader-pack ZIP files.

  • Never permanently overwrites shader settings.

Shader packs can implement lighting and exposure differently, so results may vary between packs and versions. Velvet Night leaves unknown shader code untouched to prevent compatibility problems.
