TONI's Better Jungle Temples: Lost Maya City

The jungle temple becomes a lost Maya city: a pyramid with a grand stair and a summit temple, a hidden stair down to a trap labyrinth that is different every time, the Jaguar King's tomb and a sacred cenote. Requires TONI's Structure Lib.

Better Jungle Temples

The vanilla jungle temple is three rooms, two levers and a tripwire. Better Jungle Temples replaces it with the city it should have been the ruin of: a five tier pyramid climbing out of the canopy, a temple on its summit, a hidden stair inside it and, sixteen blocks under the plaza, a labyrinth of traps that leads to the tomb of the Jaguar King.

The labyrinth is different in every temple. A mud brick cousin rises in the mangrove swamps.

The whole city

The Pyramid

Five terraces of mossy stone, thirty-nine blocks square at the base, each with a band of carved glyphs and the faded red and blue the Maya painted everything with, each with a cornice and a ledge the jungle has taken over: moss, azaleas and curtains of vines.

A single grand stair runs up the south face from the plaza to the platform, nine wide, between two balustrades that end in the open jaws of feathered serpents.

The Summit Temple

On top: a temple with three doors onto a terrace where a chacmool waits with its bowl turned to the sky, a painted frieze and a pierced roof comb with a mask at its heart. Inside, a gallery and the sanctuary: an altar of jade before the carved tablet on the back wall, braziers and offering chests.

The Hidden Stair

As in the Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque, the sanctuary floor hides the way down: a spiral stair, one step per block, down the core of the pyramid. Halfway down it opens on the Hall of Offerings, a corbel vaulted gallery inside the base with painted floors, niches of offerings and the serpent mouth of the north door. Then it keeps going.

The Labyrinth of Trials

At the bottom of the stair: the Labyrinth of Trials, twelve by five cells of three-wide passages, grown from the temple's seed so no two are the same. It is not empty.

  • Tripwires across the passages, with dispensers in the walls that fire across at head height.
  • Spike plates: stone plates on dispensers that shoot straight up.
  • Plates over TNT, and trapped chests in some dead ends with TNT under them.
  • Cobwebs, bones, a spider spawner, and chests in the dead ends that are worth the walk.

Under the plaza: the labyrinth, the tomb and the cenote

The Jaguar King

At the far end of the labyrinth, under the grand stair, one last wire across the door and then the tomb: a corbel vaulted chamber with painted walls, six pillars, four jaguar guardians at the corners of a dais and the sarcophagus of the Jaguar King under his jade death mask. The treasure is along the walls.

The Sacred Cenote

West of the pyramid the ground opens on the sacred cenote: cliffs hung with vines, a stair cut down the rock to a ledge over dark water, a sacrificial platform jutting out from the rim and offerings on the bottom for whoever dives for them. A tunnel from the ledge runs into the west side of the labyrinth: the back door.

Around The Plaza

  • The observatory: a round tower on a platform with a snail of steps inside and a domed room on top, its slits aimed at the four quarters and at the rising of Venus. The astronomer left his chest.
  • The ball court: two long platforms with sloping benches, a stone ring high on each wall and a stair up the outside.
  • The skull rack: a platform walled in skulls, with racks of them on top.
  • The white road from the foot of the stair, with carved stelae and their altars along it.

The Mangrove City

The same city in the mangrove swamps, built in mud brick and mangrove wood and standing one course above the water: tonisjungletemples:mangrove_temple, with its own placement, so it takes nothing away from the jungle.

Every Version

Every version from 1.19 to 26.3: Fabric, Forge on every version Forge shipped for, and NeoForge from 1.20.1 on. Pick the file that matches your game.

It requires TONI's Structure Lib, the engine of the structure series: the temple is written once and the lib builds it in every version. On Fabric it also needs Fabric API. Both are marked as dependencies, so the CurseForge app installs them with it.

  • Replaces jungle temples in newly generated chunks; the ones you have already found are left alone.
  • Keeps the vanilla spacing and salt, so /locate still works and temple sites do not move.
  • Where the jungle is too steep for a plaza (more than about 22 blocks of rise and fall under it) that temple is not built.
  • Seven loot tables; the richest chests also roll the vanilla jungle temple table, so the wild armor trim still turns up.
  • Server-side: clients do not need it.

FAQ

Do I need any other mod?
Yes: TONI's Structure Lib, and on Fabric Fabric API. The game will not start without them.

Do I need it on the client?
No. It is a server-side mod. Installing it on a client as well is harmless.

Can I add it to an existing world?
Yes. Jungle temples in chunks you have not generated yet will be the new ones.

How do I find one?
/locate structure minecraft:jungle_pyramid, or tonisjungletemples:mangrove_temple for the mud brick one.

Are the traps dangerous?
Yes. Watch the floor, look for wires, and think twice about the chest at the end of a dead end.

Older versions?
1.19 is the floor: before it the game works out a jungle temple's height while it builds it, so there is nothing to plan a city with.

Modpacks?
Go ahead.

Pictures are renders of the mod's own models drawn with the game's textures.
