You arrived in this world alone. That was the mistake.
The Arrival is a psychological horror mod centered around a single creature: The Visitor.
The Visitor is an unnaturally tall, pale-faced figure that stalks you throughout your world. It does not behave like a normal Minecraft mob. It does not simply spawn, chase you, and disappear. Instead, it watches your surroundings, reacts to what you are doing, and becomes increasingly bold as you continue playing.
The longer you stay in your world, the more difficult it becomes to ignore its presence.
The Visitor
The Visitor stands three blocks tall, with unusually long arms and a face that is far too wide.
It does not appear according to a conventional mob-spawning system. Its stalking behavior continuously chooses locations based on your surroundings and what you are currently doing.
You may see it:
- Standing across an open field, on a hill, or at the edge of a cliff
- Crouched on top of a tree
- Partially hidden behind a tree in a forest
- Looking through the windows of your house
- Standing outside your door or walking around your home
- Walking across your roof while you are inside
- Waiting at the end of a tunnel or inside a nearby cave
- Hanging from the ceiling underground
- Watching from behind you while you build
- Appearing at the edge of your vision
Looking directly at the Visitor may cause it to disappear. Sometimes, however, it will remain where it is and continue watching you.
When you look away, it may be gone when you turn back. It may also be closer.
Sound
Sound is an important part of the experience.
You may hear footsteps that stop when you stop moving, breathing directly behind you, distant whispers, branches breaking in the darkness, doors opening without explanation, tapping against windows, or knocking from somewhere outside.
Not every sound means something is there.
Sometimes it does.
Escalation
The Visitor becomes more confident as you continue playing.
Early encounters may consist of distant silhouettes and sounds that are difficult to identify. Over time, sightings become closer and more deliberate. You may begin seeing it through windows, on rooftops, around your house, or directly behind you.
Eventually, the Visitor can begin interacting with your surroundings. It can open doors, extinguish torches, and appear much closer than before.
At a certain point, you may receive the message:
Something is visiting tonight.
The Visitor has already been there. It is simply no longer interested in hiding.
Hunts
A hunt occurs when the Visitor decides to pursue you directly.
During a hunt, it can:
- Chase you
- Disappear and reappear ahead of you
- Cut off possible escape routes
- Open doors while pursuing you
- Follow you into your home
Hunts are dangerous but normally survivable. By default, a hunt ends before the Visitor can kill you. This behavior can be changed through the configuration.
The Visitor World
Opening a door at the wrong moment can lead somewhere you were never supposed to go.
The Visitor World is an endless, flat landscape covered in grey fog. There are no structures, resources, or landmarks. There is only the Visitor.
It may stand on the horizon, gradually approach when you are not looking, or appear directly behind you. On rare occasions, more than one Visitor may appear.
There is a way back.
Look down.
The ground is only one block thick.
