Better Loading Screen
A Genshin-inspired loading screen for Minecraft teleports and dimension changes.
Better Loading Screen replaces Minecraft’s dimension loading screen and adds a smooth loading overlay when teleporting into areas that are not yet ready to display. Instead of watching chunks appear around you, you see a clean loading screen with a destination icon, animated elemental symbols, helpful tips, and a custom sound effect.
Once the surrounding area passes the mod’s loading and rendering checks, the overlay fades out to reveal your destination.
Features
Smooth Teleport Transitions
The loading screen can appear during both same-dimension teleports and dimension changes. It checks the area around the destination before revealing the world, helping hide incomplete terrain and abrupt visual transitions.
Nearby teleports to areas that are already loaded and rendered can skip the loading screen, keeping short-distance travel responsive.
Genshin-Inspired Presentation
The interface features seven elemental symbols that gradually illuminate as loading progresses, a centered destination emblem, and a tip section near the bottom of the screen.
The progress animation is simulated for visual continuity. It does not represent an exact percentage of Minecraft’s chunk loading process; the transition finishes according to the mod’s readiness checks.
Destination Dimension Icons
Built-in emblems are provided for:
- Overworld
- The Nether
- The End
Other dimensions use a question-mark emblem by default. Custom definitions can assign unique icons to dimensions added by other mods.
Automatic Day and Night Themes
The loading screen supports light and dark styles with automatic day and night color selection. Backgrounds, text, icons, and decorative elements adapt together to create a consistent appearance.
Custom Loading Audio
A dedicated sound effect plays when the loading screen begins. Its volume fades with the transition.
Vanilla portal trigger and dimension travel sounds are suppressed to prevent them from overlapping with the custom loading audio.
Tips and Custom Fonts
The screen includes a tip title and description, with placeholder tips supplied by default. Tips can be replaced to suit a modpack, explain gameplay mechanics, or introduce custom dimensions.
Custom TTF fonts are also supported through Minecraft’s resource system.
Resource Pack and Data Pack Customization
Better Loading Screen supports custom loading-screen definitions through resource packs and data packs.
You can customize:
- Dimension emblems, including icons for additional dimensions
- Loading tips and their titles
- Loading sound events
- Font references
- The bottom elemental symbol atlas
- Loading-screen styles
Client resource-pack definitions are stored under:
assets/<namespace>/loading_screen/*.json
Server data-pack definitions are stored under:
data/<namespace>/loading_screen/*.json
Textures, audio files, and TTF fonts belong in a resource pack. Data packs provide definitions that reference those resources.
When the mod is installed on the server, server-provided definitions can be synchronized to clients and take priority over client definitions. Server definitions are cleared when the client disconnects.
Resource packs can be refreshed with F3 + T. Server data-pack definitions can be refreshed with /reload.
Configuration
The loading behavior includes configurable settings for teleport detection, the surrounding area to check, readiness stabilization, minimum display duration, fade duration, and a timeout.
Default settings include:
| Setting | Default |
|---|---|
| Movement detection threshold | 24 blocks |
| Surrounding chunk check radius | 2 chunks — a 5 × 5 area |
| Readiness stabilization time | 350 ms |
| Minimum loading-screen duration | 600 ms |
| Fade-out duration | 800 ms |
| Maximum loading-screen duration | 30 seconds |
The timeout prevents the overlay from remaining visible indefinitely when the destination cannot satisfy the readiness checks.
Compatibility
- Minecraft: 1.21.1
- Mod loader: NeoForge 21.1.228 or newer within the supported 1.21.1 branch
- Java: 21
- Client: Required for the loading-screen experience
- Server: Optional; install it to synchronize server data-pack definitions
- Additional required mods: None
The mod has been tested alongside Sodium, Iris, and Modern UI. These mods are optional.
Installation
- Install the supported version of NeoForge for Minecraft 1.21.1.
- Place the Better Loading Screen JAR in your instance’s
modsfolder. - Launch Minecraft.
For multiplayer servers that use custom data-pack loading definitions, install the mod on the server as well and provide any referenced textures, sounds, and fonts through a resource pack.
Notes and Limitations
Better Loading Screen improves the presentation of teleporting and dimension changes. It does not accelerate chunk generation, server processing, or network transfers.
The elemental progress animation is a visual indicator, not a precise loading measurement. Readiness checks and the configured timeout determine when the world is revealed.
The mod can react to a teleport once the client receives the relevant information. Time spent waiting for a server to process a teleport command may occur before the client can begin the transition.
Custom dimension icons require a matching definition and resource-pack assets; otherwise, the fallback question-mark emblem is used.
