Spirit Companions was made for SpookyJam 2026, and adds the ability to turn any mob into a spirit companion! Spirits are translucent, glow in the dark and follow their player around. While you move, they fly in a circle around you, through walls and floors. Stand still for a bit, and they'll land and walk around like the normal mob would. Spirits can't be hurt, never despawn and won't attack anything, so even a spirit creeper is harmless!
The spirit of a mob is extracted with the Spirit Lantern. Hold it on a mob for 5 seconds, and its spirit will start following you. What's left is a "soulless" husk, which slowly fades away.
A tamed cat or wolf wearing a Spirit Collar always comes back as a spirit when it dies. Pets and mounts you've had for a long time have a chance to become a spirit without a collar as well, with each in-game day spent together increasing the chance by ~14.29%. Which is 100% after 7 in-game days.
When you log out or travel far away, your spirits go to the "spirit world". They come back once you return, so they also follow you through portals and teleports. By default up to 5 spirits can follow a player, which can be changed in the config.
The mod also adds the Spirit Bell, Spirit Canister and Spirit Saddle. See below for their recipes and an explanation of their functionality. Right now, the spirits are mostly there for companionship. If you have any ideas for new functionality, or making them more useful, let me know on GitHub with a feature request :)
