Spells and Spellcrafting 2.12.64 — release notes
What's new
- Spell targeting overhaul. Spells that strike a single victim — Acid, Snare, Hold Monster, Chain Lightning, Push and the rest — now honor your crosshair: the creature you see targeted is the creature that gets hit. Fast, lunging or small enemies (spiders, baby zombies, bats) land reliably instead of whiffing.
- A cast that finds no valid victim now says "No target in sight" instead of silently fizzling.
Fixed
- Line of sight is now required to target a creature. The old, undocumented ability to strike enemies through walls and floors has been removed. Glass and other see-through solid blocks stop targeting; tall grass and crops do not.
- Wall of Fire and other aimed placements — and Blink — land at your cursor, even when a creature crosses your aim line mid-cast.
- Point-blank fliers at face height (bats, swooping phantoms) no longer whiff.
- Enemies killed by Acid alone now award XP and full player-kill loot. Previously a pure-Acid kill granted neither.
- Your own Risen minions no longer soak up hostile casts aimed at the enemy behind them — the spell passes over your front line to the target you meant. Beneficial casts on your own minions, and Push, still work on them.
Under the hood
- The casting network payload is versioned: a mismatched client is refused at login with a clear message instead of misbehaving in play.
Requires / compatible with
- Minecraft 1.21.1
- NeoForge 21.1.224+
- Optional: Zombie Village 4.57.310+ (Soul Well pouch pull), Lootr (pouch pull from opened loot containers)
Migration notes
- Update the client and server together. A 2.12.63 client on a 2.12.64 server (or the reverse) is rejected at login by design — the change that fixes the targeting desync lives on both sides of the connection.
