Shield Painting 1.0.0 (Forge 1.20.1)
Curse Maven Snippet
What's new
Shield Painting turns your shield into a canvas.
Craft a Painting Table, put it down, and drop a shield on it. Right-click the shield with a Spray Can and a pixel editor opens: the shield's front face, exactly the 12×22 texels the vanilla model uses, ready to paint. Hit Done and the picture is saved onto that shield - not a copy, not a special item, the same vanilla shield you can block with.
Features
- Paints real shields. No custom shield item. Enchantments, banner patterns and durability all keep working.
- Shows up everywhere. First person, third person, inventory, item frames, dropped on the ground, and lying on the table.
- Colour picker with no mixing to fight. A saturation/value square with a hue strip beside it, plus the sixteen dye colours as ready-made swatches. Any shade you want, straight away.
- Brush sizes, eraser, eyedropper, fill and clear.
- Ctrl+Z undoes, the scroll wheel changes brush size, right-click erases.
- Esc saves too. No way to lose work by closing the wrong way.
- Leave parts unpainted and the original shield shows through, so you can add a small emblem instead of covering the whole face.
- Multiplayer safe. Every paint request is re-validated server side: distance, whether a shield is really on that table, and whether you are actually holding a spray can.
Crafting
- Painting Table - three planks over two sticks. Takes up 2×1 blocks.
- Spray Can - an iron nugget on top, two iron ingots and gunpowder in the middle, one iron ingot below. Never runs out.
Usage
- Place the painting table.
- Right-click it holding a shield - the shield goes onto the table.
- Right-click holding the spray can - the painting screen opens.
- Left-click paints, right-click erases, scroll changes brush size, Ctrl+Z undoes.
- Press Done or Esc.
- Right-click the table with an empty hand to take the shield back.
Credits
The idea is a nod to Joy of Painting by xerca, which does the same thing for canvases and is well worth having installed. No code was taken from it; this mod was written from scratch and is released under the same GPL-3.0 licence out of respect for that work.
