Hold a sapling and press V to see where it can grow: green, yellow or red. Client-side only.
Yellow: only some tree shapes fit here (like the narrow fancy oak), so the sapling may not grow.
Hold a sapling and press V: green spots grow a tree, yellow ones may fail. The frame shows the room the tree needs.
Under a roof the sapling would never grow – marked red, with the free space above in blocks.
Dark oak needs four saplings in a square. The preview checks the whole 2×2 and the space above it.
Light 0 – this sapling will only grow with bone meal. Place a torch and it turns green.
Spruce and jungle saplings also tell you whether a giant 2×2 tree would fit.
