What's new

The skyline has two things on it now, and there is finally something you can build with on the first day. v0.15.0 filled in what the world could not give you. This one is about what you can see and what you can put up: a cooling tower you can pick out from the next region over, chimneys smoking across the demolition yard, and cardboard.

A decrepit cooling tower

  • You can see it from the next region. Sixty to seventy-five blocks of concrete on a plain that sits flat at about y 66, so it breaks the horizon from a long way out and gives the radioactive dump something to walk toward.
  • It is a real hyperboloid, wide at the ground, pinched at the waist, opening out again at the top. The first one had its waist where a real cooling tower has it and read as a chimney, because at block resolution the flare above it was about a tenth. It is unmistakable now.
  • The rim is eaten away and the shell is torn open on one side, so it reads as forty years abandoned rather than as a shape someone placed. The floor inside is silted over.
  • Rare on purpose. You will not trip over a second one.

Brick smokestacks

  • Common across the demolition yard, where the tower is rare. The yard is where things were made, and it should look like it.
  • One in three has come down, lying across the ground in a line of broken brick with a stump where it stood. The two read as one place, which is the point of having both.
  • The standing ones smoke. There is a fire buried up near the top, and the plume is visible at distance. It is not how a chimney works and it is what makes the yard look inhabited.
  • Slender. The first pass was four to one and generated brick keeps; a real industrial stack is nearer ten to one, and these are between six and nine.

And something lives at the foot of each

  • A husk at the bottom of every standing chimney. It reaches out past the brick on purpose, so walking past one is an encounter rather than scenery. You do not have to break in.
  • Parched in the tower's basin, wearing leather caps, because a large part of that floor sees sky straight up the throat and a skeleton in the open burns.
  • Both work in daylight. An ordinary spawner does not, which is the sort of thing you only find out by walking up to a landmark in the afternoon and watching nothing happen.

Cardboard

  • The first building family you can reach. Everything else in this world is gated behind a machine, a tool or a journey. Piles of flattened boxes sit on top of the mounds; break one by hand and it gives you cardboard, four of which make a block, and the block makes a slab, stairs and a wall.
  • No tool, no station, no recipe to learn. It is the plainest thing in the mod and that is the whole feature.
  • A pile is worth about one block, and an average mound carries about four of them.

Smaller things

  • A snack cake in the household stream. The cream-filled sponge famous for outlasting everything, found intact in a landfill. It is the one food down here that does not gamble and does not need cooking: it feeds you as well as a cooked roach and holds you nowhere near as long, which is what empty calories are.
  • The Roach got the per-part treatment the Pigeon has, so it no longer reads as one flat colour, and its spawn egg stopped being a blob.
  • The radioactive dump guidebook entry said "trefoil". It says what the symbol looks like now.
