# Rato's
**Tiny rats move into your world, steal a snack at midnight, and bite back when you wreck their home.**
## What is it?
Rato's adds the Pantry Rat: an endermite-sized rodent that lives in a small burrow block, comes out around midnight to sniff out food near bases and villages, and carries one item back home. Break its burrow and the rats that lived there will chase you like angry bees, then scatter and look for a new home. Cats and witches hunt them, so the rats have plenty to fear too.
## Features
π **Pantry Rat** - hand-modelled, 4 health, tiny hitbox. Brown, black and white coats (white always spawns in snowy biomes), adult and baby. Glowing eyes at night, stands on its hind legs to sniff when idle.
π³οΈ **Rat Burrow block** - appears on dirt, grass, sand and snowy grass (4 looks, 8 hole layouts). Holds up to 4 rats. New burrows slowly appear near player bases and villages; burrows with room can grow new babies.
π **Midnight raids** - rats leave the burrow around midnight, one at a time, only when no player is close. Each rat gets one search per night.
π **Sniff, don't teleport** - rats only smell food within 16 blocks. They wander, sniff around, and run home if they find nothing. They check wooden chests (the lid opens!), furnaces and smokers, and ripe crops. Poisonous foods are off the menu. Small chance (3%) to grab a gold ingot, emerald or diamond when there is no food.
π§ **Visible loot** - the stolen item shows in the rat's mouth. Stashed food stays in the burrow.
π **Bite back** - break a burrow and every adult inside charges you like bees: 2 bites each, half a heart per bite. Any armor blocks the bite. Then they scatter before looking for a new home.
ποΈ **Homeless rats** - a rat without a burrow adopts a free one within 100 blocks; otherwise adults find each other and dig a new burrow (never next to the one they lost). Babies follow an adult and move in with it.
π₯ **Spawn egg** - use it on an adult rat to make a baby with the same coat.
π **Predators** - cats, ocelots and witches hunt rats. Rats flee, sometimes freeze in fear or stumble, and cats can pounce. Players scare them too (less if you sneak).
π§ **Lively movement** - climbs walls up to 3 blocks, hops onto slabs and stairs, squeezes through doors, trapdoors, flower pots and bamboo. Peeks out of the burrow head-first while others are out.
π **Redstone** - a burrow gives a comparator pulse whenever a rat enters or leaves.
πΊοΈ **Xaero's Minimap** - 2D radar icons for all three coats.
π **Burrow loot** - breaking a burrow drops its stored food and rare rewards (gold nugget, amethyst shard, emerald, diamond). In Creative only the contents drop.

- [Fabric Loader](https://fabricmc.net/) 0.19.5 or newer
- [Fabric API](https://modrinth.com/mod/fabric-api)

## Installation
1. Install Fabric Loader for Minecraft 26.3.
2. Drop **Fabric API** and the Rato's `.jar` into your `mods` folder.
3. Launch the game. Find the burrow in the Natural Blocks tab and the egg in the Spawn Eggs tab.
## Configuration
`config/ratos.json` is created on first launch. A few options (defaults in brackets):

- `foodScentRadius` [16], `roamLeashRadius` [40], `raidChests` / `raidCrops` [true], `nightOnly` [true]
- `biteChance` [1.0], `biteDamage` [1.0 = half a heart], `avengeBites` [2]
- `adoptBurrowRadius` [100], `mateSearchRadius` [100], `babyFollowRadius` [32], `foundMinDistance` [24]
- `climbMaxBlocks` [3], `catsHuntRats` / `witchesHuntRats` [true], `freezeChance` [0.30], `catPounceChance` [0.12]
- `valuableStealChance` [0.03], `deniedFoods`, `valuableItems`, `peekChancePerSecond`, `peekHeadDepth`
Times are in ticks (20 ticks = 1 second, 24000 = 1 Minecraft day).
## FAQ
**Do rats grief my base?** Each rat takes one food item per raid (never furnace fuel) and never breaks blocks. If that bothers you, set `raidChests` / `raidCrops` to `false`.
**Can I get rid of a burrow?** Break it - it mines like dirt. Expect bites, or wear armor.
**Does it work in existing worlds?** Yes. Burrows appear over time near bases and villages.
**Can I use it in a modpack?** Please ask first (see License).
