Primitive Ages

Adds prehistoric survival progression from the stone age to the iron age. Knap stone, twist cordage, light fires by friction and climb through copper and bronze to iron, where the game eventually turns vanilla again.

What's new

The metal ages are getting a major expansion: a Tinkers'-style crucible and casting, melting scrap, scythes, javelins, polished stone and a bronze shield to name a few. Your camp also gets cellars, palisades and a potter's wheel, and you can now craft cheese, beer wooden. Below is the full changelog.

Metalworking

  • Crucible and heater. Seven blocks of seared bricks make a crucible and eight seared bricks a heater. Set the crucible on the heater and stoke it with any fuel. Its three slots melt copper, tin, bronze, gold and iron (raw ores, ingots, nuggets, dust and blocks), and the molten metal rises behind its windows. Wood heats it to about 1200°, enough for everything but iron. Iron needs coal or charcoal (about 1600°).
  • Channels and casting. A seared brick channel against the crucible opens a spout over a casting table or casting basin. Right-click it (or pulse it with redstone) to pour until the cast is full. A basin casts a block. A table takes a seared mold: eight grout packed round a pattern and fired in the pit kiln. There are ingot, pickaxe, axe, shovel, sword, knife, spear, hoe and scythe molds. A cast head takes one ingot of copper, bronze or iron and goes on a stick for the tool.
  • Bronze alloys in the crucible. Molten copper and tin run together, three to one: three copper ingots and a tin ingot make four bronze. Hand-mixed bronze dust still works, at a loss.
  • Melting scrap. Copper, bronze, gold and iron tools and armour (vanilla's and ours, horse armour too) melt back into their metal. You get back what went in, less as they wear.
  • Stream tin. Besides tin ore underground, tin sand ore lies in pockets in the shallows of rivers (about one river chunk in three, never near the sea), with smaller pockets in creeks and ponds inland. Dig it by hand and grind it at the millstone into raw tin. Blocks of tin and bronze are new too.
  • Molten metals are real fluids (c:molten_<metal>), so pipes and pumps work with the crucible and casting blocks. JEI shows melting, alloying and casting, and Jade shows heat, metals and casts.

Tools and weapons

  • Polishing stone. Two sandstone and a rock. Lay a knapped head or tool on its worn ring, wet the stone (pour water on it, or set it by water or out in the rain) and polish it with eight slow clicks. A polished head or tool lasts 75% longer and works a quarter faster, whatever its grade.
  • Javelins in stone, copper, bronze and iron. Hold right-click to draw one back, and let go to throw it exactly along the crosshair. It sticks where it lands and can be picked up again. Dispensers throw them too.
  • Scythes in copper, bronze, iron, gold, diamond and netherite. Right-click a ripe crop to reap the 3×3 around it, and each crop is sown again. Fortune and Efficiency work.
  • Hoes are back, but fragile before iron. Copper, golden, bronze and iron hoes can be crafted again. A copper hoe tills one block, gold three, bronze twelve, and iron is unchanged. Stone is too brittle for a hoe or scythe. The farmland-for-bone-meal trade is still there.
  • Bronze shield. Vanilla's recipe with a bronze ingot in place of the iron. It blocks like the iron shield and has 250 durability, between leather and iron. Mend it with bronze.
  • Leather shield. Three leather over a plank frame, lashed with sinew: a shield before metal. It blocks like an iron shield but wears out sooner.

Building and storage

  • Cellars. Wall, floor and roof a room in seared bricks and add a seared cellar door or trapdoor. Food on a wooden storage rack inside keeps four times as long. A rack holds four stacks of one thing, and tells you whether it's in a cellar.
  • Log palisade. Two logs and a cord, with an axe, make three. Palisades join like a fence, are too tall to jump, and hurt monsters that press against them. Animals and players are safe.
  • Potter's wheel. A turntable on an oak stump for the copper age. Right-click it with five clay balls to throw a pot, and the pattern guide stays up the whole time.
  • Fat lanterns. Eight copper nuggets round animal fat make a copper lantern, and eight iron nuggets make a lantern.

Food and drink

  • Cheese. Seal three milk and a salt in an empty basin, and in six minutes it sets into a cheese wheel. Set it out and cut wedges with a knife. It keeps its date when set out and goes moldy past it.
  • Beer. Sprout wheat in a basin of water, dry it into malt on a drying rack, grind it, and seal the ground malt in clean water. Beer gives a minute of Health Boost after a quick buzz.
  • Wooden mug. Five planks make a mug that holds one drink: water, tea, cider, mead or beer. Mugs stack.
  • Drinks show their effects. A mug, jug, waterskin or flask of tea, cider, mead or beer lists what it does, just like a bottle.
  • Drinks pour back. Tea, cider, mead or beer in any vessel pours back into an empty pot or basin, or one holding the same drink.
  • Mead feeds you a little: a drink restores a drumstick and a half of hunger.
  • Vessels take water like a bucket. Filling a jug, waterskin, flask or mug at open water uses up the source block.
  • Food stacks as it comes in. Food from a drying rack, or picked up anywhere, joins matching stacks in your pack straight away.

Clothing

  • Linen tunic. Five linen cloth make a light desert robe with a red sash and a head cloth. It keeps you one temperature band cooler in the heat. The skirt swings with your legs as you walk.

Atmosphere

  • Age title cards. Reaching the Stone, Copper, Bronze and Iron Ages puts a title card on screen with a horn call. Reaching the Copper Age is a new advancement. You can turn the cards off in the client config.
  • War drums. Set a war drum down on the ground and beat it there. It now sounds like a real war drum, with deep, slow booms, and a note rises with each beat.
  • Cave paintings come up as a random one of the fourteen pictures, and repainting with the same pigment always changes the picture.

Field guide, JEI and Jade

  • New field guide pages for everything above. The Processing tab is now Workshop.
  • JEI info pages and in-world recipes for the new blocks and mechanics. Jade shows the crucible, casting blocks and more.
  • New advancements: Melting Pot, Cast Away, Stream Tin, Stockade, Root Cellar, The Copper Age, Ground Stone, On Target, Reap What You Sow, Scrap Metal, Wheel-Thrown, Say Cheese and Liquid Bread.

For modpacks and servers

  • New world option Enable Preservatives (game rule primitiveages:preservatives, on by default). Turn it off and preservatives can't be crafted, so spoilage matters all game.
  • Many new server config options.
  • New startup config: tools.fragileHoes.
  • New biome tags: #primitiveages:has_tin_sand (river tin pockets) and #primitiveages:has_stream_tin (smaller creek and pond pockets).
  • Recipe changes: the wooden mug makes one from five planks. Hand-mixed bronze dust is three copper dust and a tin dust for three. Copper, golden and iron hoes use vanilla's recipes again.
  • Loot no longer turns early hoes into bone meal. Iron and diamond hoes in early loot become copper ones, like other tools.
