Primitive Ages brings slower, more deliberate progression to Minecraft’s early game while keeping its familiar vanilla feel. Your first tools, first fire, and first copper ingot each become much more meaningful steps toward a better-equipped life.
Craft stone tools with flint, cook and fire pottery over a campfire, build a kiln, and work your way into copper before moving on to iron. Along the way, fragile clay vessels let you carry water before you can afford an iron bucket.

A new path through the early game
Flint → Stone tools → Campfire → Bricks → Kiln → Copper → Iron
Your journey begins with flint and sticks. Stone tools use their familiar crafting patterns, with flint replacing cobblestone. Wooden tool recipes are disabled, and cobblestone, cobbled deepslate, and blackstone can no longer be used to craft stone tools.
Need more flint? Craft four gravel in a 2×2 square to make one flint.
Tool progression gives copper a clear purpose:
- Stone pickaxes can harvest copper ore.
- Copper pickaxes can harvest iron and coal ore.
- Iron, diamond, and netherite continue along the familiar vanilla progression.
These requirements apply to both regular and deepslate ores. Stone tools retain their vanilla appearance, stats, and repair materials.

Build and tend your first fire
Campfires can be crafted before you have coal, using logs, flint, and cobblestone.
Both regular and soul campfires are placed unlit. Craft a Fire Starter, then right-click a dry, unlit campfire to ignite it. Each starter lights one fire and is consumed on successful use.
A lighting lasts 20 minutes at normal game speed. After that, the campfire goes out and needs another starter. Time spent away from the campfire still counts while the world is running.
Water and shovels can extinguish a fire early. Flint and steel, fire charges, and burning projectiles cannot relight it. You’ll need a Fire Starter!
Use your campfire to cook food and begin working with clay.
Fire bricks directly on a campfire
Place clay balls on a lit campfire just as you would food. After 30 seconds, each clay ball becomes a brick.
A campfire can fire up to four items at once, giving you a way to make the bricks for your first kiln without already owning a furnace.
Clay balls can also be smelted into bricks in a kiln or furnace later.

Build a kiln and unlock copper
The Kiln is your first smelting station. Crafted from bricks, sand, and cobblestone, it accepts normal furnace fuels and processes supported materials at normal furnace speed.
Use it to:
- Smelt raw copper into copper ingots.
- Turn logs into charcoal.
- Make glass, bricks, and stone.
- Fire clay vessels.
- Process other supported basic materials.
Kilns cannot cook food or process higher-tier resources such as iron and gold, including recycling iron and gold equipment into nuggets. Keep cooking on your campfire until you have a furnace.
The kiln includes a familiar furnace-style interface, hopper support, comparator output, and smelting experience. Its custom brick textures, dark firing chamber, top vent, and glowing coals make it a natural centerpiece for an early workshop.

Carry water before iron with vessels!
Craft three clay balls in a bucket shape to make an Unfired Clay Vessel.
Fire it for:
- 30 seconds on a campfire, or
- 10 seconds in a kiln or furnace.
The finished Clay Vessel can collect and place one water source, letting you bring water to an early farm or settlement before crafting an iron bucket.
In survival, pouring the water breaks the vessel. Make a few spares before heading out.
Clay vessels support waterlogged blocks and water cauldrons, and dispensers can collect and pour water with them. Empty fired vessels stack to 16; filled vessels do not stack.
They carry water only—not lava, milk, powder snow, or aquatic mobs.

Earn your next workstation
Your first copper ingot opens the way to a regular furnace.
- Furnaces require a copper ingot in the center of the usual eight stone crafting materials.
- Smokers require four iron ingots in the corners, with a furnace in the center and logs on the four remaining sides.
Build copper tools, harvest iron and coal, and continue toward the later stages of vanilla survival.

Patterns below are shown from top row to bottom row. A dash means an empty slot.
| Recipe | Pattern | Ingredients |
|---|---|---|
| Flint | GG / GG |
G = gravel |
| Stone tools and sword | Normal stone-tool patterns | Replace the stone crafting material with flint; keep the sticks |
| Campfire | -L- / LFL / CCC |
L = log, F = flint, C = cobblestone |
| Fire Starter | LSL / LSL / LLL |
L = log, S = stick |
| Kiln | BBB / BSB / CCC |
B = brick item, S = sand, C = cobblestone |
| Unfired Clay Vessel | C-C / -C- |
C = clay ball |
| Furnace | SSS / SCS / SSS |
S = stone crafting material, C = copper ingot |
| Smoker | ILI / LFL / ILI |
I = iron ingot, L = log, F = furnace |
The soul campfire keeps its vanilla crafting recipe, but follows the same ignition and burn-time rules as a regular campfire.

Frequently asked questions
Why isn’t my stone pickaxe dropping iron or coal?
Those ores now require a copper pickaxe or better. Use your stone pickaxe to gather copper, then smelt it in a kiln.
How do I get fuel before I can mine coal?
The kiln accepts normal furnace fuels, including wood. You can use it to turn logs into charcoal.
Why won’t my campfire light with flint and steel?
Primitive Ages requires a Fire Starter for campfire ignition. Make sure the campfire is unlit and not waterlogged.
Can I cook food in the kiln?
No. Use a campfire for early cooking. Regular furnaces can still cook food once you obtain copper.
Does this add a separate set of flint tools?
No. Flint crafts the vanilla stone tools and sword.
What happens to wooden tools I already have?
Existing wooden tools remain usable. Their crafting recipes are disabled.
Can modpack authors customize kiln recipes?
Kiln eligibility is controlled by the primitiveages:kiln_smeltable_outputs item tag alongside the mod’s food restrictions. Outputs must be allowed by the tag and have a suitable smelting recipe. Unlisted materials, including additional modded metals, are excluded by default.
Other mods or datapacks that change the same recipes or ore-harvesting tags may need compatibility adjustments.
