Nether Cartography
Allows maps work in the Nether (inspired by this mod) and in any other dimension with a ceiling.
In vanilla, maps do not work in the Nether or any modded dimension with a ceiling:
- Maps never draw the ground and you only get a blank map with patches of colour.
- Your marker spins instead of pointing the way you face and any map icons won't
be orientated correctly.
Nether Cartography draws the map below the ceiling, so lava, land and structures
show, and keeps your marker pointing and any icons orientated correctly.
It runs on the server (or the singleplayer world), so players don't need it to
join a server that has it.
How it works
- In any dimension with a ceiling, maps show the ground below a set height, so
you see what's actually there instead of the ceiling. - Maps you make yourself use the height you were standing at when you filled
them, or the dimension's height (which can be set within the config), whichever is higher.
So a map made down at lava level still shows everything standing on the lava,
and one made higher up shows more. - Copying, zooming out or locking the map keeps its height.
- Maps you find (e.g. explorer maps, maps from chests) use the dimension's
height from the config. The Nether is set to y 60 by default, and any
dimension that isn't listed uses its sea level plus 8. - Your marker no longer spins in the Nether. It always points the way you're
facing. Map icons are correctly orientated.
Config
config/nethercartography-common.toml (nethercartography-local.toml on 26.3 and later versions). It's also editable from the NeoForge mod list.

["minecraft:the_nether=60"] |
Sets the height that maps draw from in a dimension. Maps you make higher up use the height you were standing at instead. Write each one as "dimension=y", for example "minecraft:the_nether=98". |
