Mounting Dread
The longer your world lives, the worse the nights get.
Mounting Dread makes Minecraft steadily more dangerous as your world ages. Every in-game day, the game allows more hostile mobs to spawn, until it levels off at five times the normal amount. A fresh world feels like vanilla. A world that has survived for weeks does not.
How it works
- Hostile mob spawning scales up by 10% for each in-game day that has passed.
- The scaling is capped at 5x, reached on day 40, so the game stays playable.
| In-game day |

Details
- Works by scaling the hostile mob cap, which is the limit vanilla uses to decide how many monsters may exist near players. Denser caves, darker nights, more to fight.
- Only hostile mobs are affected. Animals, villagers and other creatures are untouched.
- Days are counted from world time (24,000 ticks per day). The counter keeps running in every dimension.
- Nothing to configure and nothing stored in your world. Install it, play, and it works.
- The multiplier does not skip ahead if you use
/time commands or sleep through the night. Only real elapsed game time counts.
- On a dedicated server, days only pass while the server is ticking. If your server pauses when empty, the count pauses too. Set
pause-when-empty-seconds=-1 in server.properties if you want days to pass with nobody online.
Good to know
- Spawning rules still apply. Monsters still need darkness, valid ground and loaded chunks, so lit and well-built bases stay safe.
- A 5x mob cap can be demanding on busy servers or older computers.
- Works in singleplayer and on servers. Install it on the server; clients do not need it for multiplayer.

FAQ
Does it work on existing worlds?
Yes. Days are counted from the world's total time, so an old world starts with the multiplier it has already earned.
Can I change the 10% per day or the 5x cap?
Not through a config file yet. The values are constants in the source code.
Does it work with other mods?
It only changes the hostile mob cap, so it should work alongside most mods. Mods that change the same spawn cap may conflict.
Can I include it in a modpack?
Yes, you are free to include it in modpacks.
