MCA: Mob Compat

A compatibility layer that lets MCA Reborn treat modded mobs as the animals, mounts and livestock they are, and turns Guard Villagers guards into true MCA villagers with names, hearts, family trees and MCA's own interaction screen.

MCA: Mob Compatibility

MCA: Mob Compatibility is an addon for Minecraft Comes Alive: Reborn that helps MCA understand and safely interact with animals, mounts, livestock, guards, and other NPCs added by other mods.

Its goal is simple: make modded creatures feel like they belong in an MCA world without taking control away from the mods that added them.

The mod is built for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge and requires MCA Reborn. All other supported mods are optional.

Better Support for Modded Animals

MCA: Mob Compatibility sorts mobs into useful roles such as livestock, cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, horses, mounts, pets, guards, and humanoid NPCs.

This lets MCA and other addons understand what a mob actually represents instead of relying on a hardcoded list of vanilla animals.

Built-in support includes:

  • Vanilla animals
  • SWEM horses
  • Genetic Animals
  • DragN's Livestock Overhaul
  • Guard Villagers
  • Many other animals that use Forge's standard entity tags

Modpack authors can also add support for completely new mods through datapacks without needing to write any Java code.

Guard Villagers Integration

One of the main purposes of the mod is fixing the rough edges between MCA Reborn and Guard Villagers.

Normally, Guard Villagers can mistake an MCA villager for a regular Minecraft villager and convert them into a Guard Villagers guard. Doing so destroys the MCA villager and can permanently lose their family relationships, marriage, children, genetics, personality, inventory, and other MCA data.

MCA: Mob Compatibility prevents this.

With the default settings, attempting to recruit an MCA villager as a guard instead changes their MCA profession to Guard while leaving the actual villager intact. Their identity, family, appearance, genetics, relationships, and other MCA information remain with them.

The integration also makes Guard Villagers properly protect MCA villagers. Guards can respond when hostile mobs attack them while being prevented from treating MCA villagers as enemies themselves.

Server owners can optionally allow guards to respond when players attack MCA villagers as well.

Guard Villagers as MCA Characters

Guard Villagers can also be integrated much more deeply into MCA.

When enabled, supported guards receive an MCA-style identity and can participate in MCA's social systems while keeping their normal Guard Villagers appearance, equipment, combat behavior, and AI.

You can interact with these guards through MCA's normal interaction system, allowing features such as conversations, gifts, relationships, hiring, family interactions, home management, and other MCA actions to work with them.

Sneaking and interacting with a guard still provides access to Guard Villagers' normal inventory interface.

Behind the scenes, the mod safely connects each guard to MCA without replacing the actual guard.

This also allows bridged guards to work naturally with the wider MCA addon ecosystem, including:

  • MCA: Conversations
  • MCA: Quests
  • MCA: Crime
  • MCA: Reputation

For example, a guard can appear as the NPC in a conversation or quest, maintain MCA relationships, and be recognized by systems that react to attacks or crimes against villagers.

Safer MCA Hunting Chores

MCA villagers can perform hunting chores, but modded animals are often still considered valid animals by Minecraft. This can lead to villagers attacking animals you never intended them to hunt, including valuable horses or personally owned animals.

MCA: Mob Compatibility adds safeguards against this.

By default, hunting villagers can be prevented from attacking:

  • Animals owned by a player
  • Pets
  • Mounts
  • Named animals
  • Leashed animals

If a villager chooses one of these protected animals as a hunting target, the mod can also make them abandon the hunt instead of standing around repeatedly trying to attack something they cannot damage.

These protections are fully configurable. Modpack authors can decide which types of creatures should or should not be protected.

Livestock is intentionally not protected by default so MCA's hunting system can still function normally in modpacks that replace vanilla farm animals with modded ones.

SWEM Support

SWEM horses are recognized as horses and mounts.

Their ownership can also be detected using the normal Minecraft ownership system.

MCA: Mob Compatibility does not interfere with SWEM's breeding, training, needs, skills, tack, or other horse mechanics. Those systems remain entirely controlled by SWEM.

The mod can also report useful information about mounts, including whether they are saddled, who owns them, and who is currently riding them.

Genetic Animals Support

Animals from Genetic Animals are recognized as the appropriate types of livestock.

Their genetics, gender, pregnancy, breeding, and other mechanics remain completely controlled by Genetic Animals.

MCA: Mob Compatibility only identifies what the animals are so MCA and compatible addons can treat them appropriately.

DragN's Livestock Overhaul Support

Animals from DragN's Livestock Overhaul are recognized as livestock, with appropriate animals also recognized as horses or mounts.

As with Genetic Animals, this mod does not replace or modify the original mod's breeding, genetics, gender, or animal systems.

Designed for Modpacks

Almost all mob classification is handled through datapack entity tags.

That means a modpack can teach MCA: Mob Compatibility about animals from another mod simply by placing their entity IDs into the appropriate tags.

You can classify something as cattle, livestock, a horse, a mount, a pet, a guard, or another supported role without creating a compatibility mod.

The mod also understands Forge's commonly used animal tags, so mods that already follow those conventions may work automatically.

Individual compatibility modules can be enabled or disabled through configuration if another mod or modpack needs different behavior.

Useful Admin and Debugging Tools

MCA: Mob Compatibility includes the /mcamobcompat command for server operators and modpack developers.

It can be used to:

  • Check which supported mods are installed and active
  • See how many mobs are assigned to each role
  • Look at an entity and see how it is classified
  • Inspect mounts, their owners, saddles, and riders
  • Inspect bridged guards and their MCA identity
  • Check the state of Guard Villagers integration
  • Diagnose MCA compatibility
  • List every entity registered by another mod
  • Find the correct entity IDs when creating datapack compatibility
  • Inspect and repair Guard Villagers' MCA proxy connections when necessary

This makes it much easier to build compatibility for large modpacks without guessing what an unfamiliar mod calls its entities internally.

What This Mod Does Not Do

MCA: Mob Compatibility is designed to cooperate with other mods rather than take them over.

It does not:

  • Replace another mod's breeding system
  • Change animal genetics
  • Change pregnancy or gender systems
  • Modify animal needs or training
  • Rewrite another mod's configuration files
  • Add its own animals
  • Add its own genetics system
  • Convert Guard Villagers into MCA villagers
  • Replace Guard Villagers' combat AI
  • Modify MCA family data unnecessarily

Animal mechanics stay with the mod that created the animal.

MCA: Mob Compatibility simply gives MCA and its addons a common way to understand those creatures and safely interact with them.

Requirements

Required:

  • Minecraft 1.20.1
  • Forge
  • Minecraft Comes Alive: Reborn

Optional integrations:

  • Guard Villagers
  • SWEM
  • Genetic Animals
  • DragN's Livestock Overhaul
  • MCA: Conversations
  • MCA: Quests
  • MCA: Crime
  • MCA: Reputation

None of the optional mods are required for MCA: Mob Compatibility to load. Install whichever ones your modpack uses.

Whether you are building a heavily modded MCA village, adding realistic livestock, using advanced horses, or combining MCA with dedicated village guards, MCA: Mob Compatibility is intended to make those systems work together more naturally while keeping each original mod responsible for its own mechanics.
