Curse Maven Snippet
What's new
[0.9.0] - 2026-07-16
This release is all about making villagers sound right for their age and understand you better in chat. Toddlers now talk like toddlers, babies babble, and kids and teens got their remaining topics re-voiced so they no longer answer in an adult voice. Chat mode also understands a lot more of what you say, every personality now has its own voice, and spouses and parents finally respond to the relationship topics that were unreachable before. As always, everything here is fixed, hand-written text and logic — no AI or LLM involved.
Added
- Toddlers have their own voice everywhere they speak. Ask a toddler about their day, food, the weather, their dreams, fears, hopes, feelings, or family and you'll get a real toddler answer — never an adult line by mistake. Toddlers don't have a personality yet, so they all share the same sweet, simple voice.
- Little ones can't be asked grown-up questions. Topics like work, rumors, regrets, and secrets are now hidden from babies and toddlers. Ask a toddler about grown-up stuff and they'll brush it off in character ("That sounds like big-people stuff. Wanna see my mud pie instead?").
- Babies babble. Babies don't answer questions — they just coo and babble ("Goo? Ga-goo!") at anything you say.
- Kids and teens fill in the gaps. Check-ins, food, life, hopes, feelings, the village, people, and work now have proper child and teen answers, instead of kids replying in an adult voice.
- Every personality has a full chat voice. All 13 personalities now have their own confusion, hints, greetings, goodbyes, and comebacks in chat (about 250 new lines) — before, only a few personalities did and the rest fell back to plain, neutral lines. Even a simple "Yes?" now sounds like the villager (grumpy: "What."; peppy: "Yes yes yes?! What's up?!").
- Villagers say hi back. Walk through the square and say "hello" to no one in particular and the nearest villager greets you. Say "Hey Agnes!" and Agnes greets you back instead of giving a puzzled "Yes?" (These greetings give no hearts, so they can't be farmed.)
- A startup log line tells server owners exactly how chat mode is set up before the first message is ever sent.
Fixed
- Personalities finally sound different again. A long-standing bug caused one personality's lines to silently overwrite everyone else's, so all villagers ended up sounding the same. Grumpy and peppy villagers now sound like themselves.
- Relationship topics actually work now. Spouses, kids, and parents can now ask the "are you happy with us?"–style questions that used to just get a confused shrug.
- Chat mode understands a lot more. Short natural replies like "go on," "not sure," "don't know," and "who lives here" now work; a bare "hey" gets a response again; "how are you," "morning," and "evening" are all understood; and common typos like "afriad" or "teh" still find the right answer.
- Better at reading what you mean. Phrase matching is stricter, so an offhand line like "I like the color of that job board" no longer accidentally launches a whole speech about work.
- Multiplayer safety. Other players can no longer be mistaken for villagers — saying "Steve, wanna trade" won't make a nearby villager butt in, and common replies like "yes," "same," or "hey guys" won't accidentally match a villager whose name sounds similar.
- Clarifying questions read naturally ("Do you mean how we met, or our future?") instead of showing raw internal labels.
Changed
- Local proximity chat is now off by default. This radius-based, nearby-only chat is meant as an opt-in for solo or role-play setups — on a public server, turning it on effectively replaces global chat and disables chat reporting for those players, so it's no longer on unless you choose it. Chat mode itself is still on by default. (See CURSEFORGE.md for the new server-owner notes.)
