What's new
Maps and Quills 0.1.8 for Minecraft 1.21.1 (NeoForge)
A performance update for busy servers. No network change: 0.1.8 joins 0.1.4 to 0.1.7 servers and clients, so players can update in their own time.
FIXED: lag spikes when players are spread out
When a player stood in a part of the map the server did not have in memory, the server read that region from disk on the main thread and made the whole server wait for it. With players scattered across a big world this happened constantly. Regions are now read in the background, and the map fills that spot in a moment later instead of the game pausing.
NEW: you choose how much map the server keeps in memory
Two new settings under [performance] in warpaint-common.toml. residentRegions (default 48) is how many 512 by 512 regions each dimension keeps in memory, up to about 1.8 MB each. heldOverviews (default 256) is how many zoomed out region pictures it keeps, 16 KB each. Raise them on a big world with a slow disk, lower them on a server short of memory.
FIXED: the zoomed out pictures were never let go
Every region anybody had ever zoomed out over stayed in memory until the server restarted. They are now capped by heldOverviews and saved to disk when they drop out.
FIXED: the save grew every month on servers without a website
At every month turn the server sealed that month's map changes for the website to collect. Without a website nothing ever collected them, so each month added up to 30 MB to the save and to every autosave, for ever. With no website configured nothing is sealed now, and any months already piled up are dropped the first time the server starts on 0.1.8. With a website, at most two months wait for it, and a waiting month is resent once per connection instead of every second.
FIXED: map work took more time than promised
The map promises the server 2 ms a tick. That limit was counted per dimension, so with the Nether and the End loaded it could take three times that, plus overview work on top. It is now one 2 ms limit for everything.
FIXED: troop banners scanned every entity every second
Finding Hundred Years War troops means looking at every entity in the world. It now runs every 4 seconds instead of every second, and not at all when nobody in that dimension can see a map.
FIXED: website updates silently lost
The website connection can only send one message at a time. Anything sent while another was still going failed with no error and was never seen again. Messages now queue up and go out in order, and a failed one waits for the next connection.
Thanks to Xmat5 for reading through the code and sending every one of these, with suggested fixes.
