Deeper is harder. Every place in your world has a danger level.
LevelledWorld gives each mob a level from where it spawns, not from how long you've played or how strong you are. The area around spawn is always safe. Danger rises as you dig down and travel out, and seeded pockets of danger, and a few calm havens, are scattered across the map. The world tells you how dangerous a place is before it hurts you, and dangerous places pay better.
It works on its own with vanilla Minecraft, and it plugs straight into PathCraft RPG when both are installed.
How the levels work
- Spawn is safe. Near spawn, mobs are at their normal level or weaker.
- Down is harder. Each layer below the surface adds levels, up to +10 at the bottom of the world. The Deep Dark adds more.
- Further is harder. The levels climb slowly as you travel away from spawn.
- Pockets of danger. Some regions are hot (+3 to +6), a few are dread (+8 to +14) and some are sanctuaries (−2 to −4). Each has its own name, like Ashen Reach, and a title shows when you enter it.
- Other dimensions. The Nether starts at level 9 and the End at 16. Ancient cities and end cities have their own minimum level.
- Fixed by the seed. The same seed always gives the same danger map. Levels never follow your gear or your level, so the world doesn't scale with you. You get stronger and it stays put.
- A mob at its normal level is exactly vanilla. Above that it gets more health, damage and armor, and below that (near spawn) it gets weaker.

Reading the danger
- Nameplates like
[Lv 12] Zombie, coloured from grey (easy) through white and orange to a red skull (run).- Without PathCraft, the colour compares the mob to your gear: full iron counts as about level 5, enchanted diamond about 15, and maxed netherite 20.
- With PathCraft, it compares the mob to your character's level.
- Icons beside the colours, and a colour-blind palette.
- Zone titles when you cross into a more dangerous band or a named region.
- Ash, red fog and drifting embers in dangerous pockets (cosmetic, and each one can be turned off).
- The Danger Compass (a compass and an amethyst shard): it shows the level where you stand and points toward safer ground.
- An optional danger HUD, and
/levelledworld inspectto see exactly how a level was worked out.
Elites, champions and rewards
- From level 6 up, a few mobs spawn as Elites (★) or Champions (★★) with traits such as Armored, Swift, Molten, Frost, Vampiric, Shielded, Blinking, Volatile, Regenerating and Summoner.
- Higher-level mobs drop more experience (up to 3×) and roll better loot. Elites drop bonus loot.
- Chests deep in dangerous places get extra rolls.
- Bosses get tougher with more players nearby.
- Farms don't earn the bonuses. Level rewards need a player kill, and an optional limiter stops grinders in one spot.
- Datapacks can add their own loot by level with two loot conditions.

Maps and tooltips
- Xaero's World Map and Minimap: named regions are tinted and outlined on your map, with their names and levels.
- Jade and WTHIT: the mob's level, its normal level, and its elite traits.

🤖 How AI was used in this project
LevelledWorld was made with the help of AI tools, and this is how.
- Design and playtesting: I decided how levels were worked out, what the rewards were and how dangerous each place should feel. The mod was then playtested in depth, by me and by a group of testers, and changed wherever play showed something was off.
- Code: I worked alongside Claude, Anthropic's AI, to write the software.
- Art: the logo was made with OpenAI's GPT Image. The screenshots are unedited, taken with the MakeUp - Ultra Fast shader pack by XavierFST, through Oculus.
- In the game: LevelledWorld contains no AI and makes no network connections.
Requirements
| Minecraft | 1.20.1 |
| Loader | Forge 47.4 or newer |
| Required mods | none |
| Install on | Client and server |
Works well with (all optional)
- PathCraft RPG: mob levels become challenge ratings for your character's experience, and nameplate colours compare against your character level.
- Xaero's World Map / Minimap, Jade, WTHIT.
- Champions / Infernal Mobs: LevelledWorld turns its own elites off when either is installed, so you don't get both.
- Other mob-scaling mods: a warning on start-up names any that overlap, and the config can switch LevelledWorld to give levels only.
- Mobs from other mods get a level from an estimate of how strong they are.
Configuration
Almost everything is in levelledworld-server.toml (per world) and in datapacks: the level cap (30 by default, up to 100), the safe radius, pocket strength, the per-dimension base levels, biome and structure levels, stat scaling, elite chances, affixes and rewards. /levelledworld exportmap draws a picture of the danger map around you.
FAQ
Can I add it to an existing world? Yes. New mobs get a level when they spawn, and mobs already in the world get one when their area loads. The world spawn becomes the safe centre.
Will it make my early game impossible? No. The area around spawn is never harder than vanilla, and the levels climb slowly. Take the Danger Compass with you.
Is it in my modpack? Yes, you can put it in any modpack that's free to download. Please link here rather than re-hosting the file. Full details: PERMISSIONS.
Fabric / NeoForge / other versions? Forge 1.20.1 only for now.
