Lantern mod
Requires: Forge
Works in: SP, LAN, MP
Have you ever thought it would be great to have carryable source of light? Well, now you can make one!
Lantern was originally made by me as part of CaveGen mod, but I decided to make it as separate mod for those who would like to have Lantern but don't like my CaveGen mod.
Note: This mod also works as plugin for my CaveGen mod. That means you can use it alone, but when you install it with CaveGen, you will be able to use Glow shard from CaveGen mod to create Lantern too.

Recipes
Recipe for crafting Lantern. Note: You can change the glowstone dust into other item in your config file. But if you are playing on server, only server recipe will work.

Screenshots
You can carry the lantern around.
Or place it on ground/hang it from ceiling (it requires solid block under or over itself). The Lantern will be rotated towards you when you place it down.
Detail shot of the lantern model.
Notes
If you fly with lantern equipped the light will not update as fast as you travel, resulting in occasional spots of light in your trail. These will disappear if you walk over them or you load your world again. They won't cause any trouble.
would love this for my modpack for 1.12
In reply to Shivaxi:
You know lanterns were added in 1.10 right
can this be used to take fuel to light for finite time per item?
please update to 1.11.2!
is the light client-side when it's in your hand in other words will mobs spawn if it's in your hand
Love this mod I use it quite a bit, but one question.
Will you be updating for 1.7.10, or will you be waiting for 1.8 like some of the other mod makers out there?
Just used the 1.7.2 mod version in MC 1.7.10 no glitches yet
Thank you for your reply. Actually in fact it can cause lag since i am not on a dedicated server which means i have a fast tick kernel. I was wondering if you could make the lighting updates purely client side, or add an option for it to be purely client side as a "fake" light? This will circumvent the packets. However its not the packets are my pc that are lagging as it runs far smoother with optifine.
Also i am pretty sure the server already sends player movement to all players, so why send packets again for the lantern mod? All the client has to do is check for player movement already send by the vanilla server and make lighting updates that way.
Another idea is that when the belt lantern is on that it will not light the place up when the light level is already at a certain level so that it wont cause lag during the day for example but still work in caves.
This mod spams the server console with this message:
"2014-01-26 13:25:27 [INFO] [STDOUT] [SERVER]Packet recieved, resending to all players"
Which means this mod can cause some lag in the server. It sends the message everytime a player moves with the lantern in hand.
Also i am missing the lantern headgear.
Oh, sorry for the message, I'll remove it in the next version. But I can assure you the message won't cause any lag. The thing that might cause a lag is the fact that each time player with lantern moves, it sends packet to server, which then resends packet to every player. This is however necessarry for the mod to work correctly.
Also, there is no headgear in this mod and is not planned.
I hope you enjoy it :)
I liked your mod description and when I read your helpful responses to the other commenters I decided I should try it. Thank you.
No problem :)
Sorry for the late reply.

OH WOW! I am really dumb... It's not a resource pack... that's why... But how do I make it work? Sorry guys SUPER n00b!
Are you familiar with using mods for Minecraft? If not, I'll try to explain how to use them. First, you need to download Forge. It is API that ensures maximal compatibility when using several mods and have a lot of other advantages (for modders). You can download it here:
http://www.minecraftforge.net/forum/index.php/topic,12491.0.html
Download the "installer" file. Then launch it and click on install. This should install Forge to your Minecraft. After that, download my mod and copy it into mods folder in your .minecraft folder (do not unzip it!). Now launch minecraft and when selecting profile, instead of Default there should be Forge. Select it and lauch the game. Now you have Forge and my mod installed. Everything should then work as described in my mod description, i.e. you can craft the lantern using the recipe mentioned in the mod description. You can also set some aspects of the mod in config file located in .minecraft/config. The different settings are explained in the file. Also, the config file will be generated only after you lauch minecraft with my mod at least once.
I hope this helps ;)
If you have any issues, try to write on minecraftforum.net, section Mapping and modding, subsection Mods discussion and people here will help you :)
This is gonna sound really dumb, n00b here...
The file is in my resource pack folder it wasn't showing up in MC, so I unzipped it and still nothing...
Help?
Thank you
