Lambent Lib
A client-side lighting library for Minecraft mods.
Lambent provides dynamic lighting for other mods. It handles the rendering; the mods using it decide where lights come from, when they appear, and how they behave.
It does not add any lights by itself.
Lighting
Lambent currently supports several types of lights:
- Spot lights: Directional beams used for things like headlights and flashlights. Each has its own shadow map, allowing blocks and entities to cast shadows. The beams also produce visible haze and drifting dust.
- Point lights: Lights that spread in every direction, such as flares and lanterns. Nearby blocks still block their light, including geometry outside the screen.
- Glows: Illuminated surfaces, such as a headlight lens, with optional screen glare.
- Lens bloom: A soft glow and wider halo around a light source.
Spotlights can also pass colored light through stained glass.
Mod Compatibility
Lambent renders over the finished level, so its lighting also appears over the output of Iris and Oculus shader packs.
It is already used by Veltorque for headlights, reverse lights, tail lights, flashlights, and flares.
Supported Versions
| Minecraft | Loader | Java |
|---|---|---|
| 1.20.1 | Forge | 17 |
| 1.21.1 | NeoForge | 21 |
| 26.1.2 | NeoForge | 25 |
| 26.2 | NeoForge | 25 |
| 26.3 | NeoForge | 25 |
Client-side only. Servers do not need Lambent installed.
Minecraft 26.2 and newer can run using Vulkan, but Lambent currently uses OpenGL. Lighting will not render while Vulkan is selected.
For Developers
Mods can register their own light sources through Lambent's API and update them every frame. Position, direction, color, brightness, shadows, and fading are all controllable.
Lambent also provides hooks for drawing effects after lighting, controlling beam wind, and checking whether shader packs are active.
