Instanced Not Infinite
Turn Minecraft structures into temporary, repeatable dungeon adventures.
Instanced Not Infinite takes structures from Minecraft and other mods and lets modpacks turn them into isolated dungeon runs.
Instead of traveling thousands of blocks looking for another copy of a dungeon, players can open a portal to a fresh instance of it, explore it, collect its loot, and return home when they're finished.
Each dungeon exists in its own temporary world, so players can explore, break blocks, fight mobs, and loot the structure without permanently consuming that dungeon for everyone else.
Dungeons Without the Worldgen Hunt
Any compatible structure can potentially become an instanced dungeon.
That means a modpack can take things like:
- Ancient Cities
- Woodland Mansions
- Trial Chambers
- modded castles
- boss arenas
- underground ruins
- strongholds
- temples
- giant modded structures
and turn them into repeatable dungeon content.
Instanced Not Infinite does not add its own dungeon structures or bosses. It is designed to use the structures already available in your modpack.
Modpack authors choose which structures are available.
Manifest Your Dungeon
Dungeon portals don't simply appear.
Using a dungeon catalyst begins a Manifestation.
A miniature version of the dungeon forms in the world, gradually revealing the structure before collapsing into a portal.
Different manifestation animations can build the dungeon:
- from the ground upward
- from the center outward
- from the outside inward
- from one or several origin points
- chaotically
- in randomized patterns
Once the dungeon is ready, the miniature collapses and the portal expands into place.
The portal's appearance can even inherit colors from the biome associated with the dungeon.
Step Through the Portal
Entering the portal takes you to a fresh instance containing the selected dungeon and a small amount of terrain appropriate for it.
A surface structure may appear on its own isolated landscape.
An underground dungeon can appear buried inside stone with an entrance route carved toward it.
Ocean structures can appear within contained water environments.
Floating, Nether-like, End-like, cave, and other dungeon environments are also supported.
The goal is to give the structure enough surrounding world to feel like a real location without generating an entire permanent dimension around it.
Find Your Way Home
Every dungeon has a return portal near its entrance.
Step through it to return to the location where you originally entered the dungeon.
Multiple players can also be assigned to the same dungeon run, allowing groups to explore an instance together while completely separate groups use their own instances.
Renewable Dungeons
Instanced dungeons are temporary.
Once a run is finished or has been abandoned long enough, the instance can close and eventually be removed.
This allows valuable structures to become repeatable content without filling the normal world with countless copies of the same dungeon.
Depending on the modpack, portals can have:
- a timer before an unused dungeon closes
- a timer after everyone leaves
- an absolute maximum lifetime
- no automatic time limit at all
Looking at an active portal can show its dungeon name and remaining time.
Dungeon Catalysts
Dungeons can be opened using Manifestation Catalysts.
A catalyst can represent one specific dungeon or a collection of possible dungeons.
Specific dungeon catalysts can receive automatically generated crafting recipes based on the dungeon they open.
The mod can use the structure's theme, environment, rarity, and other information to choose appropriate crafting materials, allowing a large dungeon catalogue to have distinct recipes without requiring every recipe to be created manually.
Modpacks can still replace these recipes or customize their costs.
Dungeon Pools
Modpacks can also group structures together.
Instead of crafting an item for one exact dungeon, a catalyst can represent an entire category of structures.
For example, a pack could create catalysts for things like:
Rare Structures
Boss Dungeons
Underground Ruins
Ancient Temples
Nether Dungeons
Using one of these catalysts selects a dungeon from that pool.
JEI & EMI Support
When JEI or EMI is installed, available dungeon catalysts can appear directly in the recipe viewer.
Individual dungeon catalysts can also gain automatically generated miniature icons based on the structure they represent.
This makes large dungeon collections much easier to browse without requiring a modpack author to create custom artwork for every dungeon.
Completing a Dungeon
Servers and modpacks can choose an item that marks a dungeon as complete.
By default, throwing a Blaze Powder into either dungeon portal completes that instance.
The completion item can be changed or replaced with an item tag, allowing packs to tie dungeon completion into their own progression systems.
Dungeon completion can also be handled by other mods, quests, bosses, events, or custom systems instead.
Designed for Modpacks
Instanced Not Infinite is primarily a framework for turning an existing collection of structures into a dungeon system.
A pack author can configure structures such as:
minecraft:ancient_city
minecraft:woodland_mansion
or structures from other installed mods.
The mod will handle the rest of the normal dungeon experience automatically.
For structures that need special treatment, pack authors can override things such as:
- dungeon environment
- allowed biomes
- dungeon selection weight
- surrounding terrain size
- arrival path and platform
- natural mob spawning
- re-entry rules
- crafting cost tier
- crafting ingredients
More advanced datapack customization is available for packs that want precise control, but it is not required for ordinary structure-based dungeons.
Configurable
Server owners and modpack authors can configure things including:
- which structures can become dungeons
- structure pools and categories
- maximum simultaneous instances
- dungeon lifetime and vacancy timers
- natural mob spawning
- dungeon terrain padding
- arrival platform and path size/materials
- automatic catalyst recipes
- recipe exclusions
- manifestation animation styles
- manifestation duration
- hologram size
- portal size
- portal colors and transparency
- biome-derived portal colors
- portal lifetime
- completion item
- catalyst consumption and refund behavior
- generated dungeon icon resolution
Client settings are also available for portal information displays and Jade integration.
Optional Integrations
Jade
When installed, Jade can display dungeon information while looking at manifestations and portals, including the dungeon name, loading progress, generated icon, and closing countdown.
JEI / EMI
Dungeon catalysts and their recipes can automatically appear in supported recipe viewers.
Neither integration is required.
Important
Instanced Not Infinite does not include a built-in dungeon catalogue.
Installing the mod by itself does not automatically convert every structure in your modpack into an instance.
The server or modpack author chooses which structures should be available.
This is intentional: the mod is meant to let each pack build its own dungeon progression using whatever structure mods it already contains.
Requirements
- Minecraft 1.21.1
- NeoForge 21.1.244 or compatible newer 21.1 build
- Java 21
- JEI and EMI are optional
- Jade is optional
No additional dungeon, biome, party, or dimension library is required.
