Immersive Tanning

Immersive Tanning completely overhauls the process of tanning and working with leather, gear and armor to make it more immersive and engaging through mini-games and more complex processes.

1.2.0 – Dragon scales and a working Tanner’s Knife

Dragon-scale armor

You can now make Ice and Fire’s dragon-scale armor at the Leatherworker’s Bench, with support for all 12 colors. Each piece needs finished leather for the backing and scales of one matching color: helmets use 1 leather and 5 scales, chestplates 2 and 8, leggings 2 and 7, and boots 1 and 4.

These are Ice and Fire’s own armor pieces, keeping their appearance, base stats and breath protection. The leather backing supplies the finish, Integrity and hide traits, while your stitching determines Workmanship. By default, the bench recipes replace the matching crafting-table recipes.

Leather bonuses are toned down for scale-backed armor. Workmanship ranges from 0.95× to 1.05×, and Integrity changes durability by up to 10% either way. Supple gives 1% movement speed and 4% less detection per piece, with boots still muffling footsteps. Harness adds 20% durability, while Hardened adds 0.5 armor and 0.25 toughness per piece. Hide traits work as usual. A full Masterwork Hardened set reaches 29.4 armor and 9.05 toughness.

Scale-backed armor must be repaired with its matching dragon scales on an anvil. Leather Scraps no longer work through inventory clicks or the awl, which now explains why. You can restore scrap repairs with scaleBacked.allowScrapRepair.

Tested with Ice and Fire 2.1.13-beta-5 and Community Edition 1.2.7 on Minecraft 1.20.1, including both versions’ amethyst naming. The integration only loads when the required mod and items are present.

Tanner’s Knife

Fixed the Tanner’s Knife doing nothing when used on logs. It now strips compatible vanilla and modded logs, keeps their orientation, and gives the configured amount of bark for one durability point. Creative mode causes no wear, and any bark that will not fit in your inventory drops at your feet.

Bark, wear and advancements are handled by the server after a successful strip. Already-stripped logs, unsuitable blocks and attempts blocked by another mod give nothing and cause no wear. The knife only gains stripping, without other axe actions.

Farmer’s Delight cutting boards also accept the knife for log recipes now, producing stripped logs and tree bark. That bark still works in the tanning vat.

Bench and tooltip improvements

Bench recipes now show color variants in their names, so you can tell otherwise identically named armor apart. Hovering over an ingredient shows its full tooltip. JEI and item tooltips also identify scale-backed equipment, and the displayed bonuses match the server’s values.

Updating and pack settings

Update both client and server. The network protocol remains at 2 and the transmitted recipe format is unchanged, but 1.1 clients show incorrect scale-backed bonuses. Existing items keep their data without migration; older bench-made items already tagged as scale-backed now use the new balance values.

The new scaleBacked settings start with their defaults. Reversed minimum and maximum values disable the affected effects with a warning instead of falling back to ordinary leather bonuses.

To disable the Ice and Fire bench recipes and restore normal crafting, add iceandfire to modBlacklist. Set replaceLeatherEquipmentRecipes = false to keep both crafting methods, or use recipeBlacklist to preserve individual crafting recipes. These settings also cover recipes explicitly replaced by bench recipes. Apply recipe-setting changes with /reload.

Datapacks can now give bench recipes an optional replaces entry containing one crafting recipe ID or a list. Replacement only happens when the bench recipe is active, its extra ingredients exist, the crafting recipe makes the same item, and the settings and blacklists allow it. Reloading cleanly restores or disables recipes, and /immersive_tanning report explains which recipes were kept. Existing datapacks work without changes.

The #immersive_tanning:scale_backed tag lets pack makers extend leather-backed crafting to other armor. Pieces crafted while tagged remember their scale-backed status even if the tag changes later.

Added tools to generate and check compatibility recipes and tags, plus more server, client and Ultima tests covering stripping, recipe reloads, interrupted crafting and refunds, armor bonuses, traits, repairs and tooltips. Tests no longer rewrite world configuration files, avoiding reload conflicts and stale settings.
