Illegal Items 1.2.0
One Block at a Time. Mojang's 2022 April Fools snapshot, 22w13oneblockatatime, is back as a potion: drink Grabbing and for five minutes you play by its rules, carrying one thing at a time in your bare hands while everyone else plays the normal game around you. Plus a slab made of two slabs, real glowing obsidian for the Nether Reactor, potions of Luck and Unluck, and a humane way to get your spawn eggs back.
🫳 The Potion of Grabbing
- Brewed from an awkward potion and a slime ball. It lasts five minutes, and comes in splash, lingering and tipped arrow form like any other potion.
- Only the person who drank it is affected. Everyone else on the server, and the world itself, carries on exactly as before.
- One thing at a time. Your inventory, hotbar, health and hunger bars are packed away. Whatever you carry is held out in front of you in both arms, in first person and third, the way the snapshot drew it.
🧱 Break it, carry it, throw it
- Punch a block with empty hands and it comes away into your arms. Containers spill their contents as they go. A tool still digs, and gets swapped for whatever it dug out.
- Right-click to put it down or use it, so food still gets eaten and bows still get drawn. Right-click at the sky, or sneak, to throw it. The drop key lobs it gently instead.
- Thrown things land as blocks. Water and lava buckets land as water and lava, end portal frames turn to face the nearest stronghold, glass and ice have a fair chance of shattering, and anything thrown through lava comes out smelted.
- Items with no block land as a "How did we get here?" block: the item itself, lying flat on the floor. Breaking it hands the item back, in pieces of the item rather than block dust, and a fire next to one cooks it, so raw beef becomes steak and raw iron becomes an ingot.
- Footprints. Every step you take while carrying something leaves a print behind you, fading over ten seconds.
🛠️ Crafting on the floor
- The world is the crafting grid. Throw something onto a crafting table and it completes whatever recipe is laid out around it: every square of the pattern turns into the result. Or throw the crafting table onto a pattern that's already laid out.
- The grid is read from where you threw, so recipes that care about their shape need facing the right way. Two planks one behind the other make sticks, not a pressure plate.
🐔 Mobs on your head
- Punch a mob with empty hands to pick it up and wear it, then keep going and build a tower. Horses, donkeys and llamas you climb onto instead, and the ender dragon too, once every end crystal within 200 blocks is gone.
- Some of them help. A chicken lets you drift down and spares you the landing. A bee floats you up into the sky. A pig hauls you up to the nearest ceiling (pigs fly) and is carried on its back with its legs in the air. A spider lets you climb walls, and a magma cube makes you fireproof.
- Some of them shoot. A skeleton or illusioner up there looses arrows wherever you look, a witch lobs a random potion, and a drowned with a trident throws tridents without ever running out.
- Throw them. A thrown mob hurts whatever it hits and gets hurt back, the bigger the other the worse. A thrown sheep leaves its wool behind when it lands.
- Carried mobs never suffocate, and stop you at the ceiling rather than being pushed into it.
🎯 Hitting things with things
- Thrown things hurt in proportion to how hard they are, and knock back in proportion to how blast-proof.
- A carved pumpkin or a barrel lands on a mob's head and stays. On a player, anything does: throw a block straight up and you're wearing it. Getting hurt knocks it back off.
- Cactus or dripstone shears a sheep. Wool gives it its coat back, in that colour.
- A spyglass thrown at a skeleton lodges in its eye socket. With one in each eye it never misses. They drop out when it dies.
🛢️ The barrel
- Wear a barrel and you can hide in it. Standing, it covers you from the chest up. Crouch and the lid shuts, you sink inside, snap to the middle of the block and stop turning: just another barrel in the room.
- Mobs lose track of you. Zombies, skeletons, spiders, witches and pillagers can't find you, and a creeper halfway through its fuse calms back down. A mob wearing a barrel can't see to attack at all.
- In first person you look out through the gap between the staves, and the lid creaks open and shut as you crouch.
🦹 Thieves and gifts
- Illagers rob you. One that hits you while you're carrying something takes it instead of hurting you, puts its weapon away and runs. Catch it to get it back.
- Endermen give. One that hits you while your hands are empty hands you its block instead, calms down and teleports away.
- Both go "oof". Yes, that one.
- Skeletons near anyone grabbing sometimes turn up with a spyglass in each eye, and aim twice as well at people who are grabbing.
💎 Trading with your hands full
- Villagers trade what you can carry, and emerald ore is the money (deepslate works too). Walk up carrying something a villager wants and it turns to you and holds up what it would give, cycling through its offers. Right-click to swap, and the result lands in your hands, or on your head when it's a mob.
- Every one of the snapshot's trades is in. Farmers buy skeleton horses, clerics sell iron golems, masons sell TNT. They share the villager's level with its ordinary trades, so trading either way levels it up.
- Minecarts take cargo. Right-click one while carrying a block to load it into the cart, and with empty hands to take it back out.
🪨 New blocks and items
- The Mixed Slab. Put a slab into a slab of a different kind and you get a single block holding both, each half drawn as itself. Its hardness and blast resistance are the average of the two, breaking it gives both slabs back, and it sounds like whichever half you're looking at.
- Glowing Obsidian, from Pocket Edition. The Nether Reactor's shell now turns into the real thing when the reactor fires up, instead of crying obsidian standing in for it. Mine it out with a diamond pickaxe before the 45 seconds are up and it's yours. Whatever's left cools down to plain obsidian. Hardness 35, blast resistance 1,200, light level 12, just like Bedrock.
- Potions of Luck and Unluck. Luck has been in the game for years without a way to brew it: it's an emerald in an awkward potion now. A fermented spider eye sours it into Unluck, a potion vanilla never made at all.
- The Ethical Remover. A stick and a blank
item.spawn_egg.nameegg. Right-click an Agent, an NPC or a Steve and it's gone, handing back its spawn egg, with an Agent's inventory spilling onto the floor. Unlike/kill, nothing is lost. - The Footprint, from the 20w14∞ April Fools snapshot, where it was a joke aimed at everyone still asking for the old footstep particle back. Found in stronghold libraries. It does nothing at all, which is the point.
🎣 Changes
- Uncraftable potions are fished up now instead of crafted. They turn up among the junk you reel in, and the recipes are gone.
🐛 Bug fixes
- The netherite pressure plate looks right. Its model was written for a weighted plate's sixteen power levels instead of the plain on and off it actually has.
