Hear the Wind
Hear the Wind is a client-side ambience mod that adds wind sound effects when your player moves quickly through the air. Long falls, launches, fast minecarts/boats, mounts, and other high-speed movement can all bring in the wind when enabled by config.
The mod is atmospheric only. It does not change movement, physics, damage, gameplay balance, or server behavior.
Features
- Wind fades in as airborne speed increases.
- Wind fades out naturally when activation rules stop applying or movement drops below the configured threshold.
- Configurable loudness, speed thresholds, and activation contexts.
- Optional wind activation for on-foot ground movement, Elytra flight, vehicles such as boats and minecarts, and mounts such as horses.
- Optional mute for Minecraft's built-in Elytra flying sound.
- Respects Minecraft's Master and Players sound settings on modern shared builds.
- Uses bounded layered wind loops so the sound does not stack without limit while you remain fast.
- Modern shared builds (Fabric/Quilt
>=1.14.x, (Neo)Forge >=1.18.x) use pitch variation, volume wobble, crossfaded texture layers, and eight active fast-wind ambience samples. Standalone compatibility builds use three legacy fast-wind clips where older loaders need a simpler sound path.
Configuration
After first launch, the client config is created at:
config/hear_the_wind-client.toml
You can adjust the wind loudness, minimum speed threshold, maximum speed threshold, whether wind can activate on the ground, during Elytra flight, in non-living vehicles, or on living mounts, and whether Minecraft's built-in Elytra flying sound should be muted.
On shared Fabric builds for Minecraft 1.16.5 and newer, the same settings are available in-game through Mod Menu when installed. Modern Forge and NeoForge builds expose them through the loader mod-list config button.
Availability
CurseForge files are intended for CurseForge-supported Minecraft mod loaders and versions.
Fabric builds require Fabric API.
LiteLoader, Babric, and BTA Babric builds are available on the Modrinth page only.
Install the jar that matches your Minecraft version and loader.
