Light your lanterns
Hallowed turns the nights of late October into an event. On a Hallowed Night the sky turns violet, embers and autumn leaves drift past, and a swollen orange Harvest Moon hangs over the world. Villagers answer the door with candy (or a trick), spirits drift out of the dark, will-o'-the-wisps lead you to buried treasure, and at midnight a bell strikes twelve. That is the Witching Hour, and if you have left a Cursed Pumpkin out, the Hollow Horseman rides.
Every texture, the music disc and most of the sounds were made for this mod. It needs nothing beyond Fabric API on Fabric, and every system can be tuned or switched off.

- In season, from October 15 to November 5 by the server's calendar, every night is a Hallowed Night.
- Out of season, one full moon in four turns Hallowed, so the mod has something to do all year.
- At dusk a banner announces the night: A HALLOWED NIGHT · Light your lanterns.
- The sky and fog turn violet, the moon swells into a Harvest Moon, embers rise, leaves fall, owls hoot and something whispers in the distance.
- The Witching Hour: at midnight a bell tolls twelve times. Until 3 AM spirits come twice as often, a soft vignette closes in, and the Cursed Pumpkin can wake.
- At dawn the night ends, and the spirits fade.
- Zombies and skeletons that spawn on a Hallowed Night come in costume 35% of the time, wearing a carved pumpkin or a lit jack o'lantern with one of the new faces.

Craft a Treat Pail (2 String, 2 Pumpkins and a Carved Pumpkin) and hold it out to a villager on a Hallowed Night.
- Treat (72% of doors): one or two pieces of candy go straight into your pail.
- Come in costume and 90% of doors treat you, with an extra piece. A costume is anything on your head from the
hallowed:costumestag: any carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern, a mob head, the Witch Hat or the Horseman's Head. - Trick: six harmless pranks. A burst of bats, a pumpkin stuck on your head for twenty seconds, a short float into the air, a jumpscare that leaves you Spooked, the villager vanishing in a puff of smoke, or sticky fingers that keep a piece from your pail.
- Each villager answers the door once a night. Wandering traders always treat, and always slip in a Soul Toffee.
- The pail holds candy only, and you can see the candy in it once it has some.

| Candy | Effect | Recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Candy Corn | 8 s of Sugar Rush, and it stacks | Sugar, Wheat and Orange Dye (makes 4) |
| Caramel Apple | Regeneration, Absorption and a little Sugar Rush | Sugar over an Apple over a Stick |
| Ghost Gummy | Invisibility and Slow Falling for 20 s | Ectoplasm, Sugar and a Slimeball (makes 3) |
| Pumpkin Truffle | Cures Spooked and Sugar Crash, then Resistance and Fire Resistance | Pumpkin Pie, Cocoa Beans and Sugar (makes 2) |
| Witch's Lollipop | A random hex: usually Speed, Haste, Jump Boost, Luck or another good one, sometimes a mischievous one | Treats and drops only |
| Bat Wing Licorice | Night Vision, and every monster within 24 blocks glows | Treats and drops only |
| Eyeball Jawbreaker | Strength for 45 s, but it takes a while to get through | A Spider Eye and 2 Sugar (makes 2) |
| Soul Toffee | Spirit Ward for 2 minutes: spirits take you for one of their own | Ectoplasm, Sugar, a Honey Bottle and Soul Sand (makes 2) |
- Sugar Rush makes you faster on foot, swinging and mining. It stacks up to 60 seconds; above 30 it turns into Sugar Rush II, and when that runs out you get a Sugar Crash.
- Monsters you kill on a Hallowed Night drop candy 20% of the time. Costumed ones always do.

- Use shears on any carved pumpkin to carve the next face. Sneak to go back one.
- Eight faces: Classic, Grin, Fangs, Cat, Scream, Wink, Skull and Bat. The Classic face is the vanilla pumpkin.
- Use a torch on it to light it, or a soul torch for a Soul Jack o'Lantern with a cold blue flame. Or craft one: a Carved Pumpkin over a Soul Torch.
- Every face can be worn, and every worn face is a costume.
Lit jack o'lanterns ward the night. No spirit appears within 12 blocks of a lit jack o'lantern (20 for a soul one), and spirits that wander close turn and flee. Vanilla jack o'lanterns count too.

Spirits rise out of the ground on Hallowed Nights, 18 to 34 blocks from you under the open sky, never on Peaceful. Up to two at a time per player, four in the Witching Hour.
- They swoop through walls to reach you. A hit leaves you Spooked: slower, with a pounding heartbeat.
- 16 health. They drop Ectoplasm, which goes into Ghost Gummies, Soul Toffee and the Cursed Pumpkin.
- They fade at dawn. Spirit Ward (Soul Toffee, or wearing the Horseman's Head) makes them ignore you.

Will-o'-the-wisps appear near you every few minutes on a Hallowed Night: a flicker of green-gold foxfire that hums and chimes.
- Walk up to one and it sets off. It leads you up to 60 blocks across the land, and waits if you fall behind.
- Where it stops it sinks into the ground and leaves a Hallowed Cache. Open it: candy, and a chance at Ectoplasm, gold, emeralds, a Witch Hat, a Treat Pail or a diamond.
- Cursed wisps burn violet. They lead you into an ambush of three spirits, guarding a richer cache with Soul Toffee, diamonds, the music disc or a Cursed Pumpkin.

Summon him with a Cursed Pumpkin: a Soul Jack o'Lantern surrounded by 6 Ectoplasm and 2 Bones. Place it in the Overworld. When the bell strikes twelve on a Hallowed Night it wakes, pulses green, and the Horseman rises from the earth beside it, with a boss bar and a banner for everyone within 96 blocks.
Phase one, mounted. He rides a burning nightmare steed.
- Wide scythe sweeps up close, and lobbed flaming jack o'lanterns that burst on landing.
- Charges: he rears up, then thunders across the field. Sidestep, and if he hits a wall he is stunned and takes 35% more damage.
Phase two, at half health. His steed collapses in a burst of embers and he fights on foot.
- He calls spirits to his side.
- He throws his own head at you. It homes in, bursts, and comes back to him. While it is gone he takes 50% more damage.
He has 320 health, 8 armor and hits for 11. If dawn breaks before you fell him, he laughs and rides away.

Felled, he bursts into a piñata of 22 to 29 candies, and drops the Reaper Scythe or the Horseman's Head, 4 to 8 Ectoplasm, a 35% chance at the music disc and a 15% chance at another Cursed Pumpkin.

- Reaper Scythe: 9 attack damage. Use to Reap: cut everything around you at once, and harvest every ripe crop nearby, replanting it. Killing blows on monsters heal you.
- Horseman's Head: still burning. Wear it for Night Vision and Spirit Ward.
- Witch Hat: a Gold Nugget, Leather and 3 Black Wool. The classic costume.
- Music Disc: Witching Hour, an original waltz written for the mod (2:09).
- 14 advancements, from your first candy to Headless No More and Grim Harvest (reap nine crops in one swing).

It is not October. Can I still play?
Yes. One full moon in four is a Hallowed Night all year. Set mode to always in config/hallowed/hallowed.json for every night, or use /hallowed night start for tonight.
How do I tell if tonight is a Hallowed Night?
A banner at dusk, the violet sky and the Harvest Moon. /hallowed tells you too.
Spirits keep finding me. How do I keep them out? Light jack o'lanterns: nothing spawns within 12 blocks of one, 20 of a soul one. Soul Toffee and the Horseman's Head make spirits ignore you.
The Cursed Pumpkin does nothing.
It only wakes at the Witching Hour (midnight to 3 AM) of a Hallowed Night, in the Overworld, not on Peaceful, and not while another Horseman rides within 160 blocks. Use it to read what it is waiting for. Set summon_needs_witching_hour to false to wake it on any night.
Will the Horseman burn my base?
No. His jack o'lanterns only set fires if you turn sets_fires on, and never in spawn protection.
The jumpscare is too much.
Set jumpscares to false in config/hallowed/client.json. You still hear the trick. Or turn the spook trick off for the whole server in hallowed.json.
