Grey Goo Redux — v0.5.2

Grey Goo Redux adds eight very different self-replicating Goo types to Minecraft, ranging from world-consuming infestations to protective swarms, dimensional gateways, and terrain restoration.

What's New in v0.5.2

Terra Goo — Expanded Restoration Zones

Terra Goo now protects a much larger area.

A newly placed Terra seed can establish a restoration zone covering up to a 3×3 square of chunks. The terrain is remembered when the zone is created, and Terra can gradually rebuild damage throughout that area.

Terra is designed as damage repair, not a complete world rollback:

• If the original terrain contained a block, Terra can restore it.
• If the original terrain contained air, anything you build there afterward is left alone.
• If another Grey Goo Redux Goo currently occupies the space, Terra waits until it leaves before repairing the area.

Multiple Terra seeds inside the same zone share the same snapshot and increase the restoration speed.

Terra restoration remains deliberately gradual and visible, rebuilding damaged terrain from the bottom upward.

Terra seeds are also persistent. If another mod destroys one without using the normal breaking system, Terra can recognize that the seed is missing and restore it.

Normal removal still requires a wooden shovel. Removing the final seed ends that restoration zone and deletes its stored snapshot.

Extraplanar Goo — Major Portal Overhaul

Extraplanar Goo has received a substantial overhaul.

Placing it creates an animated Broken Cosmic Ring that opens a gateway to a randomly selected registered dimension.

Possible destinations include:

• The Overworld
• The Nether
• The End
• Modded dimensions
• A distant location within the current dimension

Portal Construction

Portals now assemble and dismantle gradually instead of appearing instantly.

The landing area, frame, and portal surface form piece by piece, with the interior appearing in a randomized pattern. Teardown reverses the same process.

The timing is intentionally slow and dramatic so the gateway feels like something being constructed rather than a normal instant portal.

Portals Can Carve Through Terrain

Extraplanar Goo no longer requires a large open area.

The ring can carve itself into ordinary terrain and fluids while it forms, allowing portals to appear:

• Against cliffs
• Inside hills or caves
• Underwater
• Inside the Nether
• In unusual modded dimensions

Protected blocks, other Goo, block entities, and unbreakable blocks are avoided.

When the portal dismantles, the terrain it displaced is restored.

Safer Arrivals

Both sides of the portal now create a temporary landing platform and clear a small entrance area.

Before teleporting you, the portal checks that:

• The destination area is loaded
• The destination portal still exists
• There is somewhere safe to stand
• There is enough headroom
• You are not being placed over a void or dangerous opening

Momentum and fall distance are cleared during travel.

Portals also monitor your arrival for a short time after teleportation. If another mod redirects you somewhere else during the dimension change, Grey Goo Redux can detect the unexpected movement and attempt to return you to the actual portal.

Travel is immediate, with a short cooldown to prevent accidentally bouncing straight back through the gateway.

Better Compatibility With Modded Dimensions

Destination placement no longer depends on assumptions about how a dimension's terrain is structured.

Instead, the portal searches for a usable location and prefers open space when possible, while remaining capable of carving a safe chamber when necessary.

This makes Extraplanar Goo much more reliable in unusual modded dimensions.

Aetherial Goo — Four Guardian Swarms Per Player

Aetherial Goo now operates independently for every player.

Each activated player receives four Aetherial swarms:

• One primary swarm
• Three guardian swarms

These swarms follow and protect only their owner, allowing multiple players to use Aetherial Goo at the same time without interfering with one another.

Protective Support

Aetherial Goo responds when its owner is actually in danger.

It can:

• Heal critically low health
• Build an absorption overshield
• Restore hunger and saturation
• Refill air while drowning
• Protect against fire and lava
• Repair damaged equipment
• Attack hostile mobs

Individual swarms can break away from the group and orbit the player while handling different emergency effects.

Death Rescue

If an active owner takes lethal damage, Aetherial Goo can trigger a powerful emergency rescue.

For a short period, the player receives rapid healing, food, air, equipment repair, protection, and an absorption shield while all four swarms converge around them.

When the rescue finishes, all four swarms are consumed and Aetherial must be placed again to regain its protection.

There is no artificial cooldown after a rescue. Consuming the entire swarm collection is the cost.

Prismatic Goo Improvements

Prismatic Goo remains the dedicated hunter and cleanup Goo.

It targets:

• Grey Goo
• Void Goo
• Water Goo
• Lava Goo
• Aetherial Goo

It does not attack Terra Goo or active Extraplanar portal infrastructure.

Prismatic Goo is now guaranteed to remain faster than the fastest Goo it is currently capable of hunting, helping it keep up with heavily accelerated outbreaks.

Prismatic Goo can also travel through liquids without permanently destroying the fluid sources it passes through.

Improved Infestation Watchdog

The automatic performance watchdog now monitors all spreading Goo types:

• Grey
• Void
• Prismatic
• Water
• Lava

Previously, some Goo types could grow to extreme populations without being covered by the normal outbreak watchdog.

The watchdog still requires both a dangerous population and sustained server slowdown before taking action, so it is not intended to function as a simple population cap.

Repeated emergency purges also escalate. If an outbreak immediately grows back and repeatedly causes problems, the number of survivors is reduced until the infestation is finally brought under control.

Terra restoration data and Extraplanar portal infrastructure are protected from these emergency cleanup systems.

New Admin Commands

Grey Goo Redux now includes emergency management commands.

/ggr status

Displays active Goo populations.

/ggr purge <type>

Purges a specific Goo type.

/ggr purge

Triggers a complete emergency Goo purge.

The full command name is also available:

/greygooredux

These commands are intended as a manual recovery option when an experiment gets out of control before the automatic failsafes activate.

The Eight Goos

Grey Goo

A classic world-consuming infestation.

Grey Goo spreads through eligible solid blocks, consumes terrain, destroys dropped items, and attacks non-player creatures.

It cannot freely bridge through open air.

Void Goo

The most destructive Goo.

Void Goo expands through blocks, fluids, and open space, forming a growing three-dimensional cosmic mass while older interior cells hollow away.

Prismatic Goo

A high-speed predator designed specifically to hunt other Goo infestations.

When nothing remains to hunt, it removes itself.

Aetherial Goo

A powerful personal guardian system built around four protective swarms per player.

It attacks enemies, supports injured owners, and can perform a one-use emergency death rescue.

Water Goo

Spreads only through connected water.

Lava Goo

Spreads only through connected lava.

Extraplanar Goo

Constructs an animated Broken Cosmic Ring leading to a random registered dimension, complete with safe landing areas and terrain restoration when the portal disappears.

Terra Goo

Records a restoration zone and gradually rebuilds damaged terrain while allowing normal player construction to remain.

Performance & Safety

Grey Goo Redux contains deliberately self-replicating and highly destructive mechanics.

Several safeguards are included to prevent a runaway experiment from permanently locking up a world:

• Per-type infestation monitoring
• Automatic emergency population reduction
• Escalating cleanup for recurring outbreaks
• Severe server-lag failsafe
• Singleplayer FPS emergency failsafe
• Manual /ggr purge commands

These systems are intended as emergency recovery tools, not substitutes for common sense.

Back up worlds you care about before experimenting with large infestations.

Modpack Use

Grey Goo Redux is released under the MIT License.

You may include it in public or private modpacks without requesting permission.

Final Warning

Grey Goo Redux is intentionally capable of causing enormous changes to a Minecraft world.

Grey Goo eats it.

Void Goo erases it.

Prismatic Goo hunts what escaped.

Terra Goo tries to put it back together.

And Extraplanar Goo opens a door somewhere you probably weren't planning to visit.

You were the one who placed it.
