Grey Goo Redux

Grey Goo Redux is a destructive world-event mod for Minecraft 1.20.1 built around one idea: if you unleash something capable of consuming a world, it should actually feel dangerous.

Inspired by Kaupenjoe’s original Grey Goo mod, Grey Goo Redux takes the concept in its own direction with completely new visuals, several distinct Goo types, large-scale performance safeguards, and much more varied behavior.

Some Goo spreads. Some grows. Some hunts. Some protects you.

And some exists because you desperately need a way to deal with the others.

Grey Goo

Grey Goo is the classic world-eater and the centerpiece of the mod.

Once released, it begins consuming almost anything around it and multiplying through the environment. Terrain, structures, valuable blocks, modded blocks, mobs, dropped items, fluids, and most things you would normally consider permanent are all fair game.

Grey Goo can bridge small gaps, work its way through complicated terrain, and even begin migrating toward nearby players from a distance.

A neglected outbreak can become enormous surprisingly quickly.

That is very much intentional.

Grey Goo Redux is not designed around making destructive Goo safe. It is designed around letting the disaster happen while giving the game enough safeguards to survive it.

Black Goo

Black Goo is a very different kind of threat.

Instead of flowing across the landscape, it grows outward as a dense three-dimensional tumor, expanding through terrain, liquids, and open air alike.

A small specimen can eventually become an enormous mass of absolute darkness swallowing everything around it.

Black Goo emits no light and carries almost no visible surface detail. At sufficient scale, it begins to look less like a Minecraft block and more like a section of reality has simply disappeared.

It spreads more slowly than Grey Goo, but it is relentless once established.

Void Goo

Void Goo exists for one purpose:

Find other Goo and destroy it.

Rather than spreading randomly, Void Goo behaves like a high-speed seeker swarm. Once released, it identifies active Goo outbreaks and launches toward them in a narrow, aggressive stream.

It does not casually infest the landscape or balloon outward without purpose. It moves toward a target, tears through the infestation, and continues searching until the threat is gone.

Void Goo will hunt Grey Goo, Black Goo, Water Goo, Lava Goo, and Aetherial Goo.

When no valid Goo remains, the swarm disappears.

Its appearance draws inspiration from the strange depth of an End Portal: an almost bottomless surface with subtle movement and only the faintest glow around its edges.

Water Goo

Water Goo specializes in consuming water.

Introduce it to a pond, river, lake, ocean, or other connected body of water and it begins working its way through the fluid network, erasing the water as the front advances.

It has no interest in players or anything else around it. Water Goo simply follows the material it was made to consume.

Small bodies of water can disappear quickly.

Large oceans can become much more interesting.

Lava Goo

Lava Goo performs the same job underground.

Once introduced to lava, it spreads through connected source and flowing lava until the network has been consumed.

Like Water Goo, it does not pursue players. Its behavior is entirely driven by nearby lava.

A small patch inside a cave can eventually work its way through a surprisingly large underground lava system.

Aetherial Goo

Aetherial Goo is the protective member of the Goo family.

Rather than consuming the environment, it forms a swarm of small pearl-gold gel cubes that stay near the player who released it.

The swarm moves as a loose school, drifting around its owner until something requires its attention.

When hostile creatures enter the surrounding area, Aetherial Goo breaks formation and attacks them. It deals substantial damage while remaining intangible and capable of passing directly through solid terrain without disturbing the world around it.

If its owner becomes injured or hungry, the swarm changes behavior entirely.

The Aetherial Goo gathers into a moving ring around the player and gradually restores health, food, and saturation while playing a soft healing melody. The formation follows the player as they move rather than forcing them to remain still.

Once recovery is complete, the swarm returns to its normal protective behavior.

Aetherial Goo is powerful, but it is still Goo.

Void Goo considers it prey.

A Living Goo Ecosystem

Each Goo type is intended to behave fundamentally differently rather than simply recoloring the same spreading block.

Grey Goo consumes.

Black Goo grows.

Void Goo hunts.

Water Goo drains.

Lava Goo devours.

Aetherial Goo protects.

The result is a collection of Goo types that interact with the environment and with one another in dramatically different ways.

Sometimes that means watching an ocean disappear.

Sometimes it means discovering a growing sphere of darkness underground.

Sometimes it means realizing that the Grey Goo you placed a few minutes ago has become a landscape-scale problem.

And sometimes it means releasing Void Goo because things have gotten completely out of hand.

Built for Big Outbreaks

Grey Goo Redux is designed to allow destruction on a genuinely large scale.

Rather than permanently restricting every outbreak to a tiny number of blocks, the mod allows Goo populations to grow naturally while keeping emergency performance safeguards in reserve for situations where an outbreak begins seriously threatening game performance.

Until then, the Goo is allowed to do what Goo does.

Watching an infestation become enormous is not an unintended edge case.

It is part of the experience.

A Distinct Visual Style

Grey Goo Redux uses original artwork with a unified visual style built around dark organic surfaces, aqueous gels, subtle internal movement, and restrained sculk-inspired patterns.

The Goo types deliberately avoid excessive brightness. Their glow is meant to provide atmosphere rather than illuminate half the landscape.

Grey Goo has a dark metallic-organic appearance with faint silver activity beneath the surface.

Black Goo is pure negative space.

Void Goo resembles a moving dimensional surface with subtle edge illumination.

Water Goo carries deep aquatic tones and fluid internal patterns.

Lava Goo smolders with subdued orange and red energy.

Aetherial Goo has a soft pearl-and-gold appearance associated with healing and holy magic.

Large swarms are meant to look eerie, strange, and alive without becoming visually exhausting.

The Goo Roster

Grey Goo is an aggressive world-consuming swarm capable of turning a small mistake into a landscape-scale disaster.

Black Goo is a slowly expanding three-dimensional void tumor that grows through terrain, fluids, and open air.

Void Goo is a high-speed anti-Goo seeker swarm designed to hunt down and destroy every other Goo type it can find.

Water Goo consumes connected bodies of water and drains them as it advances.

Lava Goo follows and consumes connected lava networks.

Aetherial Goo stays with its owner as a defensive, healing swarm capable of attacking hostile creatures and restoring the player when needed.

Together, these six Goo types can turn an ordinary Minecraft world into anything from a controlled experiment to a complete environmental catastrophe.
