What's new
π Grey Goo Redux v0.3.10 β The Extraplanar Update
This is the largest Grey Goo Redux update since v0.2.4.
The headline addition is Extraplanar Goo: a self-building cosmic portal system designed for reckless, random dimension hopping. The entire 0.3.x cycle has also included major work on portal stability, Goo interactions, Aetherial behavior, underwater support, terrain restoration and cross-dimensional effect handling.
π NEW β Extraplanar Goo
A completely new Goo type has arrived.
Place Extraplanar Goo and it begins constructing a massive Broken Cosmic Ring around the placement point.
Once construction finishes, the ring opens a portal to a randomly selected dimension registered on the server.
That can include:
π The Overworld
π₯ The Nether
π The End
π Modded dimensions
π² Even the dimension you're already standing in, with a distant random destination
The destination is deliberately random.
No menu. No coordinates. No picking the safe option.
Throw the Goo down and see where reality sends you.
π Dimensional Roulette
Extraplanar Goo discovers the dimensions available in the running Minecraft instance rather than relying on a small hard-coded list.
Every registered dimension is eligible for selection.
That means dimension-heavy modpacks dramatically increase the number of possible destinations.
The End is also a valid destination without becoming a one-way trap: the Extraplanar return portal remains available independently of Minecraft's normal End portal rules.
πͺ Broken Cosmic Ring
Extraplanar Goo doesn't simply spawn a rectangle of portal blocks.
The Goo constructs a large asymmetrical Broken Cosmic Ring one piece at a time.
The portal opening begins at normal walking level, so you can enter without jumping onto a raised platform.
Construction and teardown use a scattered, pseudo-random order, causing pieces of the ring and membrane to gradually speckle into and out of existence instead of appearing as a giant instant structure.
βοΈ The Portal Builds Where You Put It
Extraplanar Goo no longer expects a conveniently empty construction site.
Once placement is accepted, the portal claims the space it needs.
The ring can carve through:
πͺ¨ Stone and terrain
π³ Trees and vegetation
π§ Water
π Lava
𧱠Structures
βοΈ Ores
ποΈ Bedrock
π¦ Supported block entities
β¦and ordinary modded terrain.
The portal wins while it exists.
π Full Underwater Construction
Extraplanar portals can now assemble and operate completely underwater.
A nasty bug during development allowed water to repeatedly reclaim newly placed portal membrane blocks, causing the portal interior to blink in and out forever without activating.
That has been fixed.
Portal membrane cells now reject fluid occupation while remaining intangible to the player.
Underwater rings can fully assemble, stabilize, function and dismantle normally.
β»οΈ Temporary Terrain Damage
The portal may be destructive while constructing itself, but the damage is meant to be temporary.
Blocks displaced by the ring, membrane, support area and construction clearance are recorded before replacement.
When the portal pair shuts down, the structure dismantles itself in stages and restores the captured environment.
This includes displaced terrain, fluids and supported block-entity data.
πͺ One Portal Pair Per Player
Each player can maintain one active Extraplanar portal pair.
Opening another pair replaces the previous one.
Yes, this means repeatedly opening random portals across different dimensions can become a very effective way to completely lose track of where you started.
Working as intended.
π Outbound + Return Travel
Crossing the source portal sends its owner to the linked destination.
The destination portal provides the return trip.
Using that return trip retires the portal pair and begins staged disassembly at both ends.
A 6-second travel cooldown prevents immediate portal bouncing after a crossing.
Arrival positioning has also been moved outside the destination membrane so you don't materialize directly inside the trigger and get thrown straight back.
π Portal Visual Overhaul
Extraplanar Goo moved away from the earlier bright electric-energy appearance.
The final style is much darker and more cosmic:
π£ Deep violet and purple
β« Near-black space
β¨ Sparse star-like speckles
π Nebula-like depth
π Subtle dimensional movement
The membrane has its own deeper galaxy-like appearance so the doorway feels distinct from the surrounding Goo frame.
π Prismatic Goo vs. Extraplanar Goo
Prismatic Goo has gained another job.
It now recognizes Extraplanar portal infrastructure as Goo contamination.
If Prismatic Goo successfully reaches a managed Extraplanar frame or membrane, the linked portal pair begins collapsing.
Prismatic Goo can also now properly traverse water and other fluid-filled routes while hunting prey.
This was specifically tested successfully underwater.
π Prismatic Cleanup Improvements
Prismatic Goo remains the dedicated cleanup predator.
It aggressively searches for other Goo, travels dramatically faster than ordinary Goo and removes itself once no valid prey remains.
Its directed movement has continued to be refined so it behaves more like a hunter and less like an uncontrolled expanding blob.
β¨ Aetherial Goo Improvements
Aetherial Goo is now treated as one global logical swarm per player/server context rather than allowing accidental duplicate swarms to accumulate across dimension changes.
The swarm continues to follow its owner between dimensions without needing to physically travel through Extraplanar portals.
Its role remains the same:
βοΈ Attacks nearby threats
β€οΈ Helps keep its owner alive
π Restores hunger over time
β¨ Follows the player as a roaming celestial bodyguard
π Can still be destroyed by Prismatic Goo
π§ͺ Potion & Status Effect Preservation
Cross-dimensional teleportation can be messy when a large modpack has multiple systems granting potion effects, Curios effects and equipment abilities.
Extraplanar travel now preserves active status effects across dimension changes using several restoration passes after teleportation.
v0.3.10 adds a short post-transfer protection window that checks again after arrival in case another mod clears an effect slightly later during its own dimension-change processing.
Temporary potion durations are adjusted instead of simply being restarted at full duration.
Most ordinary potion effects and several accessory/relic effects now survive Extraplanar travel correctly.
β οΈ Known Compatibility Quirk
Some accessories that grant effects through their own custom equipment logic can still behave differently after dimensional teleportation.
One known example is Terramity's Ultrabright Ink Sac, whose permanent Night Vision may require the accessory to be re-equipped after using an Extraplanar portal.
Normal potion effects and several other tested equipment effects restore correctly.
This does not affect portal travel itself.
π‘οΈ Portal Durability
Managed Extraplanar portal infrastructure is intentionally extremely difficult to interfere with while active.
The ring and membrane are protected from ordinary breaking, explosions, piston movement and normal Goo destruction.
They are also excluded from Grey Goo Redux's catastrophic emergency purge system so an emergency cleanup does not leave a half-destroyed dimensional structure behind.
Prismatic Goo is the intentional exception.
βοΈ Performance-Safe Construction
Building two enormous portal structures instantly would be a terrible idea.
Extraplanar construction and dismantling are therefore spread across server ticks.
The ring assembles gradually rather than dumping hundreds of block updates into a single tick.
Portal destinations also do not permanently force-load chunks.
If an endpoint is unloaded, it waits until Minecraft naturally loads that area again.
π§ Major 0.3.x Stability Work
A large portion of the 0.3.x development cycle was spent making the Extraplanar system survive actual Minecraft runtime conditions.
v0.3.1
Introduced the first Extraplanar Goo implementation, Broken Cosmic Ring geometry, dimensional destination selection and interaction with Prismatic Goo.
v0.3.2 β v0.3.4
Major internal construction and persistence rewrites.
These builds exposed several Forge runtime mapping problems involving SavedData. The portal could compile successfully and still fail once loaded inside Minecraft.
Those runtime linkage problems were tracked down and corrected.
v0.3.5
First live-tested stable Extraplanar core.
Portal construction, activation, crossing and returning all successfully worked in-game.
v0.3.6
Added:
β¨ Speckled randomized construction
β¨ Speckled randomized teardown
πͺ Arrival outside the destination membrane
β±οΈ Initial portal travel cooldown
v0.3.7
Added:
β±οΈ 6-second travel cooldown
π€ Owner-controlled portal traversal
β¨ Global Aetherial swarm enforcement
π§ͺ Initial cross-dimensional effect preservation
β»οΈ Stronger portal teardown and terrain-restoration handling
v0.3.8
Added major portal integrity work:
π Underwater construction support
π³ Better operation inside trees and solid terrain
π Portal activation now requires a genuinely complete membrane
π Prismatic Goo fluid traversal
π§ͺ Additional delayed status-effect restoration
v0.3.9
Fixed the final major underwater portal bug.
Water could previously overwrite portal membrane cells during assembly, creating a nearly empty ring with one endlessly blinking portal block.
The membrane is now fluid-resistant and underwater portals can fully stabilize.
v0.3.10
Expanded status-effect protection after dimensional travel with multiple staggered restoration checks.
This improves compatibility with potions, relics and accessories whose effects are processed shortly after a player changes dimensions.
β Live-Tested Extraplanar Behavior
The current portal system has now been successfully tested with:
π Completely underwater construction
πͺ¨ Construction beside and through existing terrain
β¨ Full staged assembly
β¨ Full staged disassembly
πͺ Outbound dimensional travel
π Return travel
π Opening new portals while already inside other dimensions
π² Repeated random dimension hopping
π Prismatic Goo traveling underwater
The resulting system finally delivers the intended experience:
throw caution to the wind, open a cosmic doorway and see where you end up.
π‘οΈ Existing Catastrophic Failsafe
The emergency performance protection introduced by v0.2.4 remains in place.
Grey Goo Redux can still perform a total emergency Goo purge if catastrophic server performance persists long enough.
Singleplayer also retains the client-FPS emergency trigger that was successfully live-tested during the v0.2.4 cycle.
Extraplanar portal infrastructure is deliberately exempt from this emergency cleanup.
π In Short
v0.3.10 turns Grey Goo Redux from a collection of world-consuming experiments into something considerably stranger.
Now the Goo can:
π©Ά Eat the world
β« Erase it
π Clean itself up
β¨ Protect you
π Invade fluids
π And tear open a doorway to somewhere you probably shouldn't go
Have fun.
