Ore follows geology: the Overworld splits into huge provinces of real rock, the wealth lies in rare, giant ore districts far apart, and you find them like a prospector, by brushing rock and sifting stream sand for ore pieces.

Ore that follows geology, and the fun of finding it.

The Overworld is split into huge geological provinces, each with its own rock. The real wealth lies in rare mineral districts far apart from each other: coal seams hundreds of blocks wide, walls of banded iron, copper bodies with a hundred thousand ore blocks. You find them the way a real prospector would: brush rock and soil, bag sand from the streams, sift and wash it, and follow the ore pieces upstream.

⛏️ Features

  • 🗺️ Geological provinces: ten kinds, two to three thousand blocks across. Caves and mines show their rock.
  • 💎 Mineral districts: coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond and emerald form in rare, huge deposits. Everywhere else you find small occurrences, enough for your first tools, torches and a bucket.
  • 🪨 A natural surface: a weathered skin of ordinary stone, four blocks deep, covers the province rock wherever the land is open to the sky. Nothing on the surface gives a deposit away.
  • 🖌️ Brush the rock: the vanilla brush takes rock and soil samples: which rock lies beneath, whether it is altered or stained, and which minerals show nearby.
  • 🎒 Sample Bags and the Sieve: bag sand, gravel or clay from a stream. Open the bag, put it through a Sieve or wash it in a Create fan, and it gives up ore pieces of the districts upstream. The more pieces, the nearer or richer the district.
  • 🧩 Ore pieces: nine of them make what one ore block drops.
  • 🌋 No surface lava (lakes, springs or lavafalls) outside volcanic biomes.
  • 📖 The Prospector's Field Guide explains all of it in the game.

🚀 Getting started

  1. Open the Prospector's Field Guide. You get it on your first join, or craft it from a book and a flint.
  2. Craft a brush and a few Sample Bags (one wool and one string make four).
  3. Find out which province you are in: look at the rock in a cave, or brush a cliff.
  4. Fill a bag at every stream on your travels: use it on sand, gravel or clay at the water's edge, then open it.
  5. Build a Sieve (four sticks around a string) at home. It gets three times as many pieces out of a sample as your hands.
  6. When the pieces pick up, you are getting close. Brush the soil and rock to find the district, then dig.

📦 Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge
  • Nothing else
  • Recommended: Modonomicon, for the Prospector's Field Guide

🤝 Works with

  • Create: wash your samples in a fan's water stream for the most ore pieces.
  • Biomes O' Plenty and Terralith: their volcanic biomes keep their lava.
  • JEI: pages for the sieve, the bags, the samples and the ore pieces.

⚙️ Good to know

  • Only the Overworld changes, and only in newly generated land. The Nether, the End and other dimensions keep their ores.
  • The Field Guide's ore pages also cover other mods' ores, written from your world's own data.
  • Config generationtweaks-common.toml: province size, how often districts appear, their size and grade, the small occurrences, surface lava, and the pieces per way of working.
  • 🌍 In English and German.

Made for the Far Lands modpack. Works in any NeoForge 1.21.1 pack.
