Description

GadgetBox — an unofficial OpenBlocks revival

OpenBlocks was one of those mods that did a hundred small things well. GadgetBox brings those things to modern Fabric: XP tanks, the auto-machines, elevators, the crane backpack, paint and stencils, trophy pedestals, and the odds and ends that made the original feel like a toolbox rather than a tech mod.

This is an unofficial revival, not a museum port. The original models and textures are used where they still fit; the code, recipes and tags are new, and the systems that would not survive modern Minecraft were rebuilt or made safer. If you want the exact 1.12 experience, this is not it. If you want the gadgets to work on 1.20.1, 1.20.4, 1.20.6, 1.21.1 and 1.21.11 without dragging along a 1.12 coremod, that is exactly what it is for.

Minecraft 1.20.1, 1.20.4, 1.20.6, 1.21.1 and 1.21.11 · Fabric · Fabric API required · one jar, client and server

New here? Install 1.20.1 or 1.21.1 for modpacks, or 1.21.11 for the latest port. The guide book below explains every machine in game.

Which version should I install?

  • 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 — best for modpacks and the widest mod compatibility.
  • 1.21.11 — latest Minecraft port with the rebuilt client and 3D trophy icons.
  • 1.20.4 and 1.20.6 — for servers pinned to those versions.
  • 1.21.3 is a testing canary and is not published.

Start with the guide

Craft the guide book — a book, a glass bottle and lapis lazuli — and open it. It has five chapters and 45 pages covering XP, machines, movement, decoration and compatibility. The guide is the manual: it explains the machine GUIs, the crane controls, the paint economy and the config options without sending you to a wiki.

What is in the box

XP that behaves like a resource

  • XP tanks store points, not bottles. Put tanks next to each other and they form a network; the 10 / 100 / 1000 / All buttons work on the whole network, and a comparator reads the fill.
  • XP drains collect XP, showers spray it back out at an adjustable rate, and bottlers turn it into bottles. The dense bottle holds 50 points.
  • The vacuum hopper picks up items and XP orbs, keeps a small internal buffer, and pushes items out at a sane rate instead of dumping a whole stack the moment something arrives.

Machines that remove the busywork

  • Auto enchantment table: set up the vanilla 15-bookshelf layout, pick one of three real enchantment offers, pay the levels and lapis, and let it work. It shows the enchantment, the level requirement and the exact XP it will drain before you commit.
  • Auto anvil: choose 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% repair per operation; the material cost scales with how much durability you restore.
  • Block breaker, block placer, item dropper, item cannon, fan, sprinkler, bear trap, sponge and trash can. Small, predictable machines — no new ores, no tech tree, no fifteen-step crafting chain.
  • The machines that need settings have a GUI; the passive ones stay out of your way.

Getting around

  • Elevators in all 16 dye colours. Place two, right-click, and go up or down. No GUI, no channels, no frequency cards.
  • The crane backpack is the big one. Wear it, hold the crane control, and the magnet lifts blocks, chests and mobs. The yellow field shows what it will grab, the green pad shows where it will land, and a carried chest keeps its contents. Right-click raises, sneak lowers, left-click grabs or releases.
  • The luggage is a 27-slot follower that carries your stuff, packs into an item on sneak + right-click, and keeps its inventory.
  • The hang glider is a wearable chest-slot glider with the original folded and spread wing.
  • Rope ladders, a two-block sleeping bag and a thin path block cover the small things.

Paint, properly

  • Canvas blocks and canvas glass you can paint face by face.
  • 30 stencil patterns across geometric, nature and symbol tabs. The drawing table turns a blank stencil into the pattern you picked, and crafts the whole stack at once.
  • A paint mixer that takes cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks and gives you the 16-colour palette. Paint cans hold 192 units, brushes have 24 uses, and creative mode does not drain them.

Trophies and other trouble

  • 42 trophy pedestals, each with a miniature mob. Kill a mob and there is a 5% chance it drops its trophy. Right-click a trophy for a small, themed trick; the tricks are safe by design.
  • The golden egg, the cursor, flags, big buttons, targets and the builder guide round out the set. The builder guide draws the shape first, then builds it from your blocks; the wireframe guide is the same idea without the placement.

The rest of the toolbox

The screenshots cover the headline systems. These are also in the jar, with their details:

  • Grave — stores up to 128 stacks with their NBT/components intact (backpacks, curios, modded gear), collects items and XP around the death point after a 5-tick delay, shows the player's name on the headstone, and disables itself when one of 28 known grave mods is installed. Accessories back-slot items are included.
  • Big metal bar — rotates blocks with horizontal facing, hopper facing, facing, axis or 16-step rotation; levers, buttons and chests only rotate while sneaking. Iron clunk included.
  • Squeegee — clears the clicked canvas face; sneak-use clears all six. Wipe sound at a higher pitch.
  • Sponge on a stick — absorbs liquids in a 7×7×7 area and has 256 durability. Lava destroys the sponge; water and other fluids are fine.
  • Big buttons — stone and wood versions. Right-click holds the button; the hold time fills the 8-slot GUI and sets the redstone strength. Sneak + right-click configures it. Signal 15 while pressed.
  • Targets — four floor facings. An arrow hit sets a 0–15 redstone signal based on distance from the bullseye, then decays after 10 ticks. One hit per arrow.
  • Flags — 16 dye colours on a two-block pole, with a 20×12 swallowtail cloth, a three-segment wave and wall flags. Right-click rotates the cloth; empty-hand right-click cycles colours. Ground flags need one free block above; 3 carpets + 3 sticks.
  • Golden egg — right-click gives nearby players Luck I for 60 seconds, with a 5-minute cooldown and END_ROD sparkles. 8 gold ingots + an egg.
  • Cursor — sneak + right-click a block to link it; right-click in air to click it remotely up to 128 blocks away for 1 XP. Respects mayInteract and mayUseItemAt.
  • Path — a 1.6-pixel decorative plate with no collision. It breaks when the block below is removed; stone + cobblestone makes 2.
  • Rope ladder — a 3-pixel climbable panel with facing states; 6 string. Thin enough to fit a wall.
  • Sleeping bag — a two-block head/foot bag with a 30-tick countdown to day; drops as one item.
  • Luggage — a 27-slot follower; follows its owner, vacuums nearby items every 10 ticks, keeps its inventory when packed with sneak + right-click.
  • Hang glider — a chest-slot glider. While airborne it limits fall speed to -0.052 (-0.176 sneaking) and adds forward motion 0.03 (0.1 sneaking); it folds on your back and spreads above your head. It ignores water, elytra and creative flight.
  • Builder guide — 20 shapes (cube, sphere, cylinder, pyramid, diamond, dome, cone, torus, disc, arch, prism, tower, wall, floor, roof, star, heart, tetra, vault, ziggurat). Builds up to the held stack, creative up to 256 per click, with a fill mode and a 3×3×3 access exclusion.
  • XP drain — a cast-iron grate that drains 4 XP/tick from a player standing on it and pulls nearby orbs into a tank below. 9 iron bars.
  • XP shower — a six-way pipe network. Rate 0–20 XP/s (default 2), four pulses per second, rotating nozzles, a rate GUI on any pipe, and a nozzle under an auto-enchanter/anvil/bottler acts as a machine conduit.
  • XP bottler — normal mode turns 10 XP into an experience bottle; dense mode turns 50 XP into a dense bottle. 40-tick cycle, output validation.
  • Dense experience bottle — drink for 50 XP over 32 ticks, returns a glass bottle, stacks to 16; 4 bottles + amethyst shard.
  • Vacuum hopper — 10 slots, a configurable internal XP buffer, six-way tank transfer, and one item per push to adjacent containers at 3 items/s (config 1–20). It no longer dumps a whole stack at once.
  • Block breaker — one break every 10 ticks, fake-player tool from the block's mineable tag, 9-slot collection, protection checks.
  • Block placer — places from 9 slots through the vanilla placement context, respects mayInteract, and keeps trying other slots if one fails.
  • Item dropper — normal / fast / stack (16) modes via sneak + right-click, with the 9-slot GUI.
  • Item cannon — a GUI with yaw ±15°, pitch ±5°, speed 0.5–4.0 and stack 1/8/16/32/64; pulls from an adjacent container and fires on redstone every 20 ticks.
  • Fan — a directional cone push scaled by redstone; no GUI.
  • Sprinkler — needs water within 3 blocks; sprays particles and gives crops a 3% chance per second to advance an age stage (max 3 per burst) in a 5×5 area; no water used.
  • Bear trap — four facings, opens/closes, pins mobs (not players); right-click or redstone releases.
  • Sponge — absorbs water in a 5×5×5 volume every 5 seconds.
  • Paint mixer — cyan/magenta/yellow/black inks, a 16-colour target palette, 300-tick cycle, auto-feed from adjacent containers.
  • Drawing table — geometric/nature/symbol tabs, 30 patterns, one click prepares the whole input stack.

Compatibility and config

  • Fabric API is required. Accessories is optional, for the crane backpack and hang glider.
  • The grave checks for other grave mods and turns itself off when one of the usual suspects is installed. The list is editable.
  • Block breaker and placer respect protection mods through a fake player and mayInteract; storage blocks expose the Fabric Transfer API; recipes use conventional tags, so modded iron, glass, wool and planks work.
  • The config file covers the grave, breaker cooldown, enchanter requirements, XP multipliers and hopper speed. Edit it and run /gadgetbox reload, or change it and restart.
  • 1.20.1, 1.20.4, 1.20.6, 1.21.1 and 1.21.11 are built from the same source and covered by the same automated in-game tests. The features are the same; only the version-specific APIs differ.
