FT's Geology

A geology layer for Minecraft: real plate tectonics driving real landforms. Strongly recommended alongside Flowing Fluids and especially Terralith.

What's new

#FT's Geology 0.11.0

The biggest update so far: the mod now builds the world, not only what happens in it. Forge 1.20.1.
From this version the mod is under the GPL-3.0 license (0.10 and older stay MIT).

**A world from plate tectonics**
- New default world type, 960 blocks tall and wider to match, with a normal-height version under World Type
- Mountain belts from real elevation data (Alps, Caucasus, Himalaya, Karakoram, Appalachians), plus one Everest, K2 and Matterhorn
- Rifts, subduction coasts, collision belts and transform basins, each with its own landforms, rock layers and ore deposits
- A new river network: streams that grow as they join, every river reaching a lake or the sea, karst rivers that sink into caves
- Terralith's biomes grow on the mod's terrain; Distant Horizons draws the far land from the same model

**Earthquakes**
- Each stretch of fault builds up strain and breaks in its own time, felt as far as real quakes are
- P and S waves, aftershocks, liquefaction, landslides and rockfall
- Damage depends on what a build is made of and what it stands on: foundations, isolation and bracing help

**Volcanoes**
- Warning signs before an eruption: quake swarms, swelling ground, warmer springs
- Pyroclastic flows, volcanic gas, ashfall that brings roofs down, bombs that fly clear of the crater
- Fissure eruptions on rifts, hundreds of blocks long

**Water, soil and weather**
- Groundwater and soil moisture: grass colour shows how wet the ground is
- Well pump; pump too much and the ground sinks, springs dry up and sinkholes open; floods after heavy rain; dams that can break
- Regional rain: storms that drift on the wind, wet and dry spells, rain shadows behind the ranges, Serene Seasons support

**Gases and power**
- Nine gases: firedamp by coal seams, carbon dioxide in craters and caves, natural gas and hydrogen sulfide over oil fields
- Electrolyser, tanks, pipes, gas engine, gas heater, gas-fired furnaces, standing flames
- Geothermal turbine on a well into hot ground; crankshaft for Create; Electrodynamics 120 V

**Instruments**
- Core drill, geothermal probe, geological map, seismograph network, weather station with a 3-day forecast, volcano observatory
- 52-page Field Guide and 18 advancements

**Changed**
- Player-built geysers are now off by default (`emergentEnabled`)
- Quake messages show over the hotbar instead of chat; new earthquake sounds

**Fixed**
- Close to 100 fixes, most of them for rivers, blocks left floating after quakes, rain with shader packs, and server stutters

**Good to know**
- `soilWaterChangesGround` (droughts changing the ground) is optional and off by default.
- The new terrain needs a new world. Older worlds keep their terrain, and earthquakes, volcanoes, weather and instruments still work in them.
