Farmer's Dislikes

Tame, feed, herd, cage, fertilize, and harvest: overhaul the vanilla farming experience.

English Description

Tame, feed, herd, cage, fertilize, and harvest: overhaul the vanilla farming experience.

Farmer's Dislikes makes vanilla crop farming and animal keeping feel more like running a real farm. Wild livestock shy away from strangers, but one hand-fed portion will tame an adult. Use troughs and chicken cages to take care of your animals, and take your dogs and shepherd's staff out to pasture. Animals that receive good care reward you in return. Rats, sparrows, weeds, and predators still make sure a finished farm needs someone looking after it.

Key Features

  • Animals behave like animals. They flee strangers, become hungry after being tamed, lower their heads and chew when eating, and need sensible care before breeding, milking, or giving their best yield.
  • Chicken keeping grows from free range to automation. Scatter seeds for chickens to peck, hear them crow at dawn, collect placeable eggs that stack, crack, and hatch, or manage them with cages and hoppers. Eggs can also be fried and eaten.
  • Beekeeping takes daily care. Watch for nectar in nearby flowers, aim at a hive to check its bee count, honey level, and colony food, and fill a nearby feeder on ground or a platform so hungry bees can feed and carry the benefit home. A complete veil and suit set protects against arthropod attacks, though bees can still become angry.
  • Useful equipment can still look at home in vanilla. Troughs, chicken cages, scarecrows, shepherd's staffs, mature compost, and sickles form a complete set of practical farm tools.
  • Pastures and fields visibly change. Sheep strip grass, animals leave manure, weeds displace crops, sparrows steal wheat, rats raid supplies, and wolves or foxes may appear around your sheep pens and chicken coops at night.
  • Good care pays back. Robust sheep drop extra wool when sheared, robust cows provide more beef, leather, and bones, and robust pigs find truffles. Hands-on harvesting or cleanup grants experience and chances for a bonus harvest.
  • You choose the management pace. Casual, Realistic, and Super Trifles adjust daily pressure, while Farmer's Delight, Avifauna of Southern China, and Kaleidoscope Cookery add matching integrations.

<details> <summary>Taming and Feeding Farm Animals</summary>

Start With One Animal

  • Wild cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, horses, and other farm animals flee players in Survival or Adventure mode. When installed alone, Farmer's Dislikes uses about 12 blocks, reduced to about 3 while sneaking; sneaking with the right food prevents fear entirely. With Hunter's Dislikes installed, that mod supplies the wider alert phase while trusted livestock remain calm. Creative and Spectator players do not frighten them.
  • In the animal avoidance whitelist, choose animals that should not flee an approaching player. Axolotls are included by default; search by name or entity ID to change the list. Some modded animals' special behaviors may not follow this setting.
  • Hand-feeding a wild adult for the first time immediately tames it. Wild animals do not become hungry on their own; only tamed animals and animals bred by players need regular care.
  • Chickens have 5 hunger and regain 1 point from each suitable seed they are hand-fed or pick up from the ground. Other farm animals have 10 hunger and regain 2 points from an ordinary hand-fed item. Aim at a tamed animal, or hold one of its foods within 12 blocks, to see its hunger. Hungry livestock call more often, and animals left without food for too long take damage and may eventually starve.
  • Adult cows enter a cooldown after being milked. Aim at a tamed cow to see whether it can currently be milked, and trying again with a bucket during the cooldown displays a message. A bucket holds three drinkable servings; each restores 1 hunger point and clears status effects, even when the player is already full.
  • When a tamed cow or mooshroom is kept robust and then killed by a player, it drops bonus beef, leather, and bones. The amount follows the selected gameplay preset; Looting still improves the vanilla base drops but does not multiply this husbandry reward again. Underweight cattle lose a little of their fresh meat and leather.
  • Breeding no longer begins after one convenient bite. Once the vanilla breeding requirements are met, fill the animals' hunger first, then manually feed one additional portion to trigger love mode. Animals bred by players are unafraid of people from birth.

Feed a Whole Pasture

  • Hand feeding works well when the farm is still small. Tamed cows, sheep, and horses can also find nearby hay bales and eat one whole, becoming fully fed immediately. This is useful when several animals are starving, but costs much more hay than ordinary feeding.
  • To make feeding a whole pasture easier, craft a trough. Use feed on it to fill the trough one visible layer at a time, much like filling a composter.
  • Put wheat in a trough for cows, sheep, and horses; carrots, potatoes, beetroot, and other pig foods for pigs; and suitable seeds for chickens. Each trough holds four layers, and connected troughs cannot mix different feed categories. Two troughs placed short end to short end join into a longer trough, making pens tidier and giving more animals room to eat. Nearby hungry tamed animals walk to a compatible trough, lower their heads and chew for about two seconds, then consume one layer. Cows, sheep, horses, and pigs regain 2 hunger; chickens regain 1. Eating on their own never starts breeding.
  • Chickens also eat suitable chicken-food seeds scattered on the ground. A wild adult chicken becomes tamed after eating the first one you throw for it.

</details>

<details> <summary>Buckets, Milking, and Bottling</summary>

  • Sneak-use a solid top surface while holding a vanilla bucket to set it down. Sneak-use it empty-handed to pick it up again. Water and milk hold three servings: use glass bottles to take a serving, or matching bottles to refill a partly filled bucket. Creature buckets show their animals moving inside and keep their original appearance when picked up.
  • Fill a trusted adult cow's hunger to 10/10. Sneak-use an empty or partly filled milk bucket on the cow to place it beneath her, then interact empty-handed for one serving at a time. Each cow provides three servings before resting; swapping buckets does not restart the round. A cow may kick the bucket over, spill the milk, and hurt the milker.
  • Drink a milk bottle or one serving from a milk bucket to restore 1 hunger point and clear status effects, even when already full. Bottles return glass bottles, and the third drink from a bucket leaves an empty bucket. Buckets show their liquid level or animal in your hand and inventory too.

</details>

<details> <summary>Care for Bees and Harvest Honey</summary>

  • A player-placed vanilla beehive starts with 5/5 colony food. Aim at a hive within 12 blocks to see its actual bee count (x/3), honey level (x/5), and colony food (x/5). Wild bee nests need no feeding. Nectar brought home restores 1 point; harvesting honey uses 1 point. At zero, honey level stops rising, but bees do not die from this system.
  • Flowers with available nectar occasionally show a few pale gold particles at their centers when viewed up close. After a bee gathers nectar, that flower stays empty for about five minutes. Keep enough flowers near the hive for ongoing foraging.
  • Craft a bee feeder with three wooden slabs, two glass panes, one string, and three planks. Place it on ground, a sturdy platform, or a hive within 16 blocks of a player-placed beehive, leaving room above for bees to fly. Craft a syrup bottle from one water bottle and one sugar; the glass bottle is returned. Use syrup on the feeder to store up to three servings, or use an empty hand to check the supply. When colony food is below full, adult bees visit in suitable flying weather, feed for about two seconds and consume one serving. They carry the benefit home and restore 2 food points on entering their own hive, up to a maximum of 5. Syrup does not produce honey directly.
  • Craft the beekeeper veil with six string and one white wool, without glass panes. It occupies the head slot and displays the complete hood; the suit occupies the chest slot and displays an off-white jacket and trousers with a gray-black perforated mesh veil. Wearing both grants immunity to arthropod attacks, including bees and spiders, though bees can still become angry, so campfire smoke remains useful during harvest.

</details>

<details> <summary>Chicken Cages, Eggs, and Automation</summary>

  • Craft a chicken cage with one wooden trapdoor, seven sticks, and one chest. Use the empty cage on a tamed adult chicken to put it inside. Wild chickens and chicks cannot be captured.
  • A cage protects its chicken from foxes and from the Oriental scops owl added by Avifauna of Southern China. Open it to add seeds or collect eggs and manure from the other two slots. A hopper on the side can refill feed, while a hopper underneath removes the outputs for an automated chicken farm.
  • You still cannot put a chicken in a cage and forget about it. Caged chickens still become hungry and can starve. They retain their original appearance and hunger value. Breaking the cage releases the chicken and drops everything stored inside.
  • Free-ranging adults first look for hay bales on which to lay; if none are available, they lay beneath their feet. Their eggs become blocks instead of constantly spinning loose items. On versions with chicken variants, temperate, cold, and warm chickens lay normal, blue, and brown eggs respectively. Older versions use ordinary eggs. You can also sneak-use the matching vanilla egg to place it on the ground or add it to eggs of the same type, with up to four in one block. Eggs hatch matching chicks that do not flee from players only when placed directly on a hay bale, and can be trampled like turtle eggs.

</details>

<details> <summary>Why Herd Sheep?</summary>

  • Sheep graze far more often than in vanilla, so a large unmanaged flock can quickly expose the dirt beneath a pasture. Lambs also need to graze more times than in vanilla before growing up. A sheared, tamed sheep must first become full and then eat one more portion on its own before regrowing wool. Shearing a robust sheep that still has wool drops one extra block in its color, while underweight sheep lose one block when possible.
  • Craft a shepherd's staff by arranging four sticks into a long hooked shape. When you approach a flock with it, the sheep move away from you while drawing closer to one another, making it easier to guide them onto fresh grazing land.
  • Use the staff when dogs you have tamed are nearby to switch all of them into or out of herding at once. Herding dogs run around the outside and push sheep toward the middle, then return to you once the flock is together. They fight back when another creature attacks the flock and recover health after a successful defense.

</details>

<details> <summary>Fields, Manure, Sparrows, and Harvesting</summary>

Manure, Weeds, and Sparrows: Trouble With a Payoff

  • When the hunger of a tamed animal falls, it tries to leave manure beneath its feet. Manure can displace crops, vegetation, cobwebs, and floor or wall torches. In water it becomes waterlogged; in midair or anywhere without a valid surface, it drops as an item instead.
  • Cleaning up naturally produced manure grants experience and introduces its use in composters. A full composter produces mature compost instead of bone meal. Use mature compost on a crop to grow the surrounding 3x3 area and raise the chance of a bonus harvest the next time that field matures.
  • Weeds occasionally replace crops on farmland. They are a reason to inspect the field, but clearing them also grants experience.
  • To reduce the weeding, brew a water bottle with fermented spider eye into Weedkiller, then add gunpowder for the splash form. Splash and lingering Weedkiller clear nearby weeds on impact and keep that farmland protected for three Minecraft days. They also poison creatures caught in them, so keep yourself and livestock clear. With Jade installed, looking at treated farmland shows its remaining duration.
  • Sparrows appear by day in plains, meadows, forests, birch forests, taigas, sparse jungles, bamboo jungles, and savannas. They only peck mature wheat, lowering it by one growth stage. A sparrow may also leave seeds from the wild behind in its droppings, giving it a small chance to replace the wheat with a newly sprouted pumpkin or melon stem. Cats and foxes hunt sparrows. Craft a scarecrow from one carved pumpkin, one hay bale, and three oak fences; once placed, it drives away sparrows within 64 blocks.
  • Sparrows are more agile in the air and can turn around, change direction, and escape when they catch on corners or squeeze into tight spaces instead of flapping in place.

Harvesting Is More Than Collecting Drops

  • Breaking mature crops by hand grants experience. Crops broken by the environment or an automated machine do not grant this experience.
  • Wooden, stone, copper, iron, golden, and diamond sickles use three units of their tool material plus one stick in a curved-blade recipe. Upgrade the diamond sickle through vanilla netherite smithing.
  • Use a sickle on mature wheat, carrots, potatoes, or beetroot to harvest every supported mature crop in its area and send the drops directly into your inventory. Overflow falls to the ground. Sickles preserve the farmland but do not automatically replant it, and sickle harvesting still grants crop experience.
  • Wooden sickles harvest 2x2; stone, copper, and iron harvest 3x3; gold and diamond harvest 4x4; and netherite harvests 5x5. Ordinary harvests can produce a bonus yield, while fields treated with mature compost have a better chance.

</details>

<details> <summary>Worms and Real-Fish Angling</summary>

  • Turning dirt, grass blocks, or farmland can uncover worms. Hold a worm in your main hand and right-click to bait one normal fishing rod anywhere in your inventory while preserving its durability, enchantments, and name.
  • Plain rods do not conjure fish from nowhere. Cast a baited rod and a real nearby fish can swim to the bobber; the worm is consumed only when that fish truly bites, and reeling in pulls the hooked fish out of the water.
  • Chasing fish by swimming is deliberately difficult. Fish not on the avoidance whitelist rapidly flee swimmers through water at different depths, turn back through a pursuer when cornered in shallows, and may even breach the surface. A fish claimed by a baited bobber concentrates on the bait instead of fleeing the angler.

</details>

<details> <summary>Rats, Truffles, and Nighttime Predators</summary>

  • Rats appear in small numbers around villages and near player-placed beds, chests, or barrels. They chew hay, melons, pumpkins, and mature root crops, and stand on chests to destroy food, leather goods, paper, and books. Their searches can also leave iron nuggets, gold nuggets, or even a diamond. Cats actively hunt them.
  • A robust adult pig roots for truffles on suitable ground such as grass, dirt, podzol, or mud. Truffles are edible and a master-level farmer villager buys one for 14 emeralds. By default, pigs produce 3–5 piglets per litter, and this can be changed in the configuration.
  • At night, at least four tamed sheep within 32 blocks may attract a howling pack of 2-4 wolves. A flock of tamed, free-ranging chickens may attract one fox. Foxes also hunt sparrows and crush exposed eggs. After a wolf kills a sheep, or a fox kills a chicken or rabbit, that individual predator stops hunting those animals for roughly three quarters of a Minecraft day, preventing it from wiping out several animals in one night.

</details>

<details> <summary>Management Difficulty and Mod Integrations</summary>

Choose Your Management Difficulty

  • Open the mod configuration to choose Casual, Realistic, or Super Trifles. Casual is the default preset. Realistic keeps the pressure of daily care without taking over the whole play session; Super Trifles makes hunger, predators, and farm management stricter. Test mode makes most systems trigger very quickly and is intended only for development and troubleshooting.
  • In singleplayer, a new preset takes effect as soon as you click Done; rejoining the world is unnecessary. Block stages already in progress, such as an egg's current hatching stage, use the new preset from their next stage.
  • Pig litter size, direct chicken breeding, and other gameplay settings can also be adjusted separately.

For Modpack Authors: Lists Can Be Replaced

  • The config file stores the animal avoidance whitelist, numeric settings, and toggles: gameplay preset, piglet count, growth-booster limits, direct chicken breeding, weed chance, and the sparrow rare-crop replacement switch.
  • Every “which block or item counts as what” list is a data-pack tag under data/farmers_dislikes/tags/, covering farmland, the sparrow diet, the rat diet, blocks rats treat as chests, the cultivated-crop set, and the sparrow rare-seed whitelist and blacklist.
  • Modpack authors can ship a core data pack that overrides the same tag names to add Farmer's Delight rich soil, other mods' crops, chests, or seeds without editing the mod. The default tags keep vanilla behavior, so an unmodified pack behaves exactly as before.

Optional Mod Integrations

  • Farmer's Delight is optional. When installed, one rice panicle or two pieces of loose straw fill one roughage layer in a trough. Rice and straw bales cannot go into troughs; cows, sheep, and horses instead eat the whole block like a hay bale and become fully fed immediately.
  • Sickles additionally harvest mature cabbage, onions, tomatoes, and waterlogged rice, while mature compost works on rich-soil farmland and rice. Two manure blocks, two pieces of straw, four bone meal, and one dirt block craft Farmer's Delight organic compost. With Farmer's Delight installed, smelting eggs produces that mod's fried egg instead of the Farmer's Dislikes version.
  • With Avifauna of Southern China installed, sparrows avoid that mod's Oriental scops owl.
  • With Kaleidoscope Cookery installed, its scarecrow also repels sparrows within 16 blocks. Its sickle grants Farmer's Dislikes harvest XP and bonus-yield rewards when it successfully harvests mature crops or tea trees.

</details>

</details>

</details>

</details>

</details>

</details>
