Ender Codex
Summary
One book that holds all your other books. Put your guide books, journals and written books into the Ender Codex, then open it to see everything it holds on a single contents page and pick one to read. The book opens just as it would from your hand, and when you press Escape you're back at the contents page, ready to pick the next one.
It works with vanilla written books and book and quills (you can keep writing in them, and sign them, without taking them out) and with the guide books of other mods, including Patchouli and Modonomicon books.
Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge. Dependencies: none.
Getting started
- Craft an Ender Codex from a Book, an Ender Pearl and 2 Leather. The recipe unlocks the first time you pick up a book it can hold.
- Open your inventory, pick up a book and right-click it onto the codex. It goes inside.
- Use the codex (right-click with it in either hand) to open its contents page, and click a book to read it.
Putting books in
Like a bundle, in any inventory:
- Pick up a book and right-click it onto the codex, or
- pick up the codex and right-click it onto a book.
Identical copies (the same written book, for example) share one entry. A codex holds 64 entries by default (see Configuration). Anything that isn't a book is handled normally, so right-clicking other items onto the codex still swaps them as usual.
Hovering over a codex in your inventory shows how many books it holds and the first few titles.
Reading
Using the codex opens its contents page: each book's icon and title, seven to a page, with arrows (or Page Up / Page Down) to turn pages. Hover over a book to see its tooltip, and click it to open it.
| Book | Opens as |
|---|---|
| Written Book | The normal reading screen |
| Book and Quill | The normal writing screen. Saving and signing work as usual; a signed book stays in the codex |
| Other mods' guide books | That mod's own book screen, as if you'd used the book from your hand |
Escape goes back to the codex. Pressing Escape in any book opened from the codex reopens the contents page at the page you were on. Closing a book any other way (a Done button, for example) closes it completely.
As in vanilla, pressing Escape in a Book and Quill discards unsaved changes; use Done to save.
Taking books out
On the contents page, hover over a book: a Take link appears at the right of its row. Click it and the book goes back into your inventory (or drops at your feet if your inventory is full).
Supported books
The codex holds anything in the ender_codex:books item tag. Out of the box that is:
| Mod | Books |
|---|---|
| Minecraft | Written Book, Book and Quill |
| Patchouli | Every Patchouli guide book that uses Patchouli's own book item, such as Nature's Aura's Book of Natural Aura |
| Occultism | Dictionary of Spirits |
| Immersive Engineering | Engineer's Manual |
| Applied Energistics 2 | Guide |
| Mahou Tsukai | Knowledge Compendium |
| Hexerei | Book of Shadows |
| Others | Modonomicon, Botania's Lexica Botania, Ars Nouveau's Worn Notebook, FTB Quests' Quest Book, Integrated Dynamics' On the Dynamics of Integration, Theurgy's grimoire, and Tinkers' Construct's books |
| Any mod | Anything in the common #c:manuals tag |
Plain books, enchanted books and knowledge books can't go in; there's nothing in them to read.
Missing a book? It can be added with a data pack (see below), and requests are welcome.

See Supported books | What a codex holds |
To let the codex hold another mod's book, add it to the tag in a data pack at
data/ender_codex/tags/item/books.json:
{
"values": [
{ "id": "examplemod:field_guide", "required": false }
]
}
Using "required": false means the data pack still loads when that mod isn't installed. The codex never holds
another Ender Codex, and items that refuse to go inside containers (like Shulker Boxes) are kept out even if tagged.
