What is Compressed Blocks?
Compressed Blocks packs 9 blocks into 1. That saves a lot of inventory space, and it also makes the best wall material in the game. Compressed blocks resist the blast of any explosion. Instead of being destroyed, each explosion that reaches them removes one point of durability, so it takes several blasts to break through.
The Blocks
| Block | Made from | Mine with | Explosions to break |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compressed Cobblestone | 9 Cobblestone | Pickaxe | 4 |
| Compressed Smooth Stone | 9 Smooth Stone | Pickaxe | 4 |
| Compressed Netherrack | 9 Netherrack | Pickaxe | 4 |
| Compressed End Stone | 9 End Stone | Pickaxe | 4 |
| Compressed Dirt | 9 Dirt | Shovel | 2 |
| Compressed Sand | 9 Sand | Shovel | 2 |
| Compressed Red Sand | 9 Red Sand | Shovel | 2 |
| Compressed Obsidian | 9 Obsidian | Diamond pickaxe | 20 |
- Compressed blocks take about 3× longer to mine than the originals (Compressed Obsidian about 1.5×).
- Compressed Sand and Red Sand don't fall. Unlike regular sand, they stay where you put them.
- Stone-type blocks and obsidian drop nothing if you break them without the right tool.
Crafting
- Compress: fill the crafting grid with 9 of the same block.
- Decompress: put 1 compressed block anywhere in the grid to get the 9 blocks back.
All eight blocks work the same way.
Explosion Durability
Compressed blocks aren't destroyed by the blast itself. Instead, every explosion that reaches them removes 1 durability, and they break when it hits zero.
- This works with every explosion: TNT, creepers, and the grenades, C4 and airstrikes from Better Explosives.
- Vanilla obsidian uses the same system. It used to be immune to explosions, and now breaks after 5 blasts.
- Damage is saved with the world, so a wall stays damaged after a restart.
Check a block's durability
Right-click a block with an empty hand to see its remaining durability above your hotbar, for example Durability: 12 / 20.
Repairing
Mine a damaged block and place it back to restore it to full durability.
Every Block in Range Is Hit
An explosion damages every compressed block inside its blast radius, even blocks hidden behind other blocks. A 3-block-thick wall right next to a C4 loses durability on all three rows at once.
- Only distance protects a block. Anything past the blast radius is untouched.
- Build deeper than a blast reaches. C4 reaches 5 blocks and TNT 4, so layers further back stay at full durability.
- Mix in Compressed Obsidian where it counts. At 20 blasts, it's the toughest block in the game.
