What is Better Explosives?
Better Explosives adds 15 new explosives to Minecraft: tactical grenades, breaching charges, landmines, and airstrikes you call in by radio. Each one has its own 3D model, custom sounds, and effects.
Tactical Grenades
Throw them with right-click. Most recipes make 2, and they stack to 4.
| Item | What it does | |
|---|---|---|
![]() |
Flashbang | Pops on impact. Anyone within 8 blocks who is looking at it with line of sight gets Blindness (5 s) and Nausea (4 s). Their screen whites out, then fades back through a lingering afterimage of what they were looking at, like the flash in Counter-Strike. |
![]() |
HE Grenade | Lands, stops dead, and detonates after a 3-second fuse, throwing out a burst of glowing embers. A strong blast for clearing rooms. |
![]() |
Smoke Grenade | Releases a thick, rolling cloud of smoke for 10 seconds. Use it to cross open ground, revive a teammate, or break line of sight. |
![]() |
Decoy Grenade | Plays a primed TNT hiss every 2 seconds for 10 seconds. It makes a lot of noise and does no damage, so it's good for pulling attention the wrong way. |
![]() |
Incendiary Grenade | Sets a 3-block-radius circle on fire on impact and sets every creature within 4 blocks burning. Good for area denial. |
![]() |
Molotov Cocktail | Trails fire and smoke as it flies, then shatters into a 5×5 patch of flames. |
Tip: Zombies don't care about flashbangs or decoys, but they walk straight through fire. A molotov in the path of a horde thins it out before it reaches your walls.
Demolition
Heavier tools for breaching bases and holding ground.
C4Right-click a block to stick it straight onto that face (walls, floors, ceilings), or right-click the air to throw it so it sticks to whatever it hits. It then counts down 10 seconds, beeping faster as it gets closer to detonating. |
LandminePlace it on top of any block. It arms after 1 second, and any creature that steps on it sets it off. Mines within 4 blocks of an explosion set each other off in a chain reaction. Punch a mine to pick it back up safely. |
|
Dynamite & Triple DynamiteA lit stick with a hissing fuse you can hear following it through the air. It blows up on impact or after 3 seconds, whichever comes first. Craft three sticks into a Triple Dynamite bundle for a much bigger blast. |
Hand GrenadeA classic stick grenade that explodes on impact. Cheap to craft (two per craft). |
Physical Debris
Explosions no longer just delete blocks. Every block caught in a blast is thrown outward as a falling block, based on its direction from the center, and then rains back down. Breaching a wall leaves a crater and a pile of rubble around it. (Can be disabled through configuration)
Airstrikes
The Talkie-Walkie lets you call in air support. The bombs you carry are the price of the strike.
How to use:
- Right-click the radio to cycle its screen between Small Bombs, Large Bombs, and Nuclear.
- Look at your target, up to 200 blocks away.
- Press the Call Airstrike key.
- With enough bombs: they're consumed, a siren sounds, a jet passes overhead, and the bombs fall in at an angle and scatter across the target.
- Without enough bombs: the radio crackles and nothing happens.
| Mode | Cost | What happens |
|---|---|---|
Small Bombs |
16 × Small Bomb | 16 bombs spread across the target. |
Large Bombs |
8 × Large Bomb | 8 heavier bombs with a much bigger blast. |
Nuclear |
1 × Nuclear Bomb | The siren sounds, then a 1 min 36 s warhead announcement plays. When it ends, the warhead hits. Anyone nearby has time to hear it coming and run. |
⚠️ The Call Airstrike key is unbound by default. Set it under Options → Controls → Better Explosives before you need it.
Crafting
- The Landmine accepts any pressure plate, and the Talkie-Walkie accepts any color of wool.
- C4 and the Nuclear Bomb have no crafting recipe.
Fully Configurable
Every value in this mod can be tuned in the config file located at:
./config/better-explosives.json
Configurable values include:
- Fuse times
- Explosion power of every explosive and bomb
- Flashbang radius and effect durations
- Fire radius and burn time for the Incendiary and Molotov
- Smoke and Decoy durations
- Landmine chain-reaction radius
New options are added to the file automatically after updates.
