Changelog: Aggresive Adaptive Transfer Speed and settings for assumed LAN play

Changes

Adaptive Transfer Speed Defaults

  • Enable adaptiveTransferSpeed by default (was disabled)
  • Increase playerBandwidthLimit default: 500 KB/s → 5000 KB/s

Congestion Control Tuning

  • Increase initial transfer rate: 50 KB/s → 500 KB/s
  • Increase ramp-up rate: 50 KB/s/sec → 200 KB/s/sec

Rationale

The previous defaults were very conservative, designed for internet connections with limited bandwidth and high latency. But Au Naturel already requires relatively beefy computers, connections, and it is likely to be used on a local area network by people in very close locations.

For LAN play (common use case), these settings resulted in unnecessarily slow LOD transfers:

  • Old behavior: Start at 50 KB/s, take ~100 seconds to reach 5 MB/s
  • New behavior: Start at 500 KB/s, take ~22 seconds to reach 5 MB/s

The adaptive algorithm will hopefully automatically throttle back if a client (e.g., on WiFi) can't keep up, so these higher defaults should remain safe while significantly improving the experience for clients with good connections.  But of course we will revert if testing reveals otherwise.
